The method is fast, easy to use, and highly accurate, showing great promise for enabling whole-brain analyses at scale.

NeurAlign achieves substantially better alignment of cortical structures while maintaining state-of-the-art subcortical performance. Additionally, our method is orders of magnitude faster than the standard method for this task; NeurAlign only requires MRI scans as input.

In this work, we propose NeurAlign, a model for pairwise registration of cortical and subcortical structures. Our approach leverages an intermediate spherical coordinate space to bridge anatomical surface topology with volumetric anatomy, enabling consistent and anatomically accurate alignment.

The cortex is a thin, folded surface responsible for high-level brain functions. Unlike subcortical structures, the brain's folds don't naturally line up in 3D space. They lie on a curved surface that a standard volumetric grid is poorly equipped to represent.

Image registration aligns pairs of brain MRI scans to enable structural and functional comparisons. Traditional registration treats the interior brain volume and cortical surface separately, forcing researchers to choose and preventing whole-brain analyses.
