Lower Snow Pack Spring 2025. May 12, 2025

After a glorious fog that lingered until 08:30 or so we are sunny and calm here in Jackson, WY. Although I have to go to Yellowstone Tuesday and Wednesday with as much as 5” of snow forecast for the Lewis Lake area I’m glad to see that higher elevations in the area should get at least one last blast of snow before another as of now likely hotter and drier summer than “normal.” The Snotel Map shows the “snow-water equivalents" from stations for locations across the American West and beyond. If you zoom in on Greater Yellowstone you’ll see quite a bit of red that indicates many of the sites have dropped their snow water equivalents to very low levels. If you’d like to see the data from an individual site I type the name along with “snotel site” into google.

The map shows much of The West to perhaps be slipping towards if not into drought conditions. While most of The Southwest should be at or near normal for precipitation the NOAA Seasonal Forecast Map isn’t encouraging farther North; including Greater Yellowstone. This can be great news for earlier season hikers but of course potentially very bad news for communities in much of the country. The links for those maps follow, but first I’ve got a monumental favor to ask that I think we can all understand wherever we fall on the political spectrum.

Folks, last summer we had a major fire on the eastern periphery of Jackson Hole, the Valley my town is fortunate to be a part of. Fire is something folks across the American West have seen and dealt with for centuries now but when it's in the proverbial backyard it hits home. Wherever it is and at home and wherever we go we can’t prevent every fire, and fire is often beneficial and an excellent resource management tool and overall important component of a healthy, quasi-intact ecosystem like Greater Yellowstone; but as we all know it can also become nothing short of catastrophic. We can’t agree on everything but this summer we can al…

#Discover #Hiking #Publiclands #Compassion #Wyoming #Landscapephotography #Immigration #America #Politics #Decency See full quote from Anne Frank in photo comment. Brooks Lake and The Continental Divide. Your first National Forest, the Shoshone. Fremont County, Wyoming USA. You own every acre here.
“The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. As longs as this exists, and it certainly always will, I know that then there will always be comfort for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances may be. And I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.”

#hiking #wyoming The Absaroka Range's Pinnacle Buttes and Teton Range beyond command the view from point 11,894', the highpoint of the Ramshorn Massif in the Washakie Wilderness of your first National Forest, the Shoshone.Greater Yellowstone's two National Parks make up just 2% of the ecosystem(GYE)
Dramatic and seen from many places in Wyoming's Upper Wind River Valley very few people ever summit the Ramshorn Massif's highpoint let alone the few hundred feet lower but extremely treacherous turret of Ramshorn Peak. This is my favorite mountain massif in the world. The rolling plateau that flirsts with 12,000' (3.66 kilometers) is a sometime home to Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep and occasionally grizzly bears in late summer and early fall consuming massive numbers of Army Cutworm Moths, one of the grizzly's greatest sources of protein. This hike is VERY difficult with exposed scrambling on unstable ground and should not be undertaken by anyone without comprehensive knowledge of the few dangerous routes. The Ramshorn from Burroughs Creek.

#hiking #wyoming #naturelovers #bluesky #west #usa #grandteton #nationalpark #america South Teton, Middle Teton, Grand Teton, and Mount Owen shine beyond a couple of local residents. Please see the ALT text for a message about a serious threat to millions of acres of Federal Lands in the western US.
Please take less than two minutes to read this.Grand Teton National Park only occupies about 2% of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.Yellowstone National Park only occupies about 10% of the ecosystem. The GYE is the greatest mammalian habitat of the Northern Temperate Zone and across portions of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming it is the size of New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont combined. The bulk of the ecosystem is found across a half dozen of America's most spectacular National Forests with quite a few large wilderness areas.Wherever we live in the world as Americans we own each and every acre of ALL of our Federal Lands in equal measure with our more than 300,000,000 fellow citizens. There are forces working for deceitful, destructive, and avaricous agendas behind a lawsuit brought by the state of Uah and singed onto by a dozen other states including Wyoming that is trying to disenfranchise all but a provebial handful of the wealthiest Americans of this citizenship right and put millions of acres of Federal Lands under "local" control.Don't indulge nefarious mantras. This is not about jobs, it is about greed and in my opinion handicapping our children's future. Let your own congressional representatives and the leaders of Utah and a half dozen other states like Wyoming know your Federal Lands are not for sale and will not be stolen. These states FOREVER ceded contol of these lands in their state constitutions as a condition of statehood. Make them honor their commitments. Whatever your politics may be if you don't want that proverbial handful of people stealing Federal Lands please consider supporting organizations like The Public Lands Alliance, The Public Lands Foundation, The Conservation Lands Foundation, The Trust for Public Land, National Wildlife Federation, Sierra Club, Earthjustice, Outdoor Alliance, and the Foundation for America's Public Lands. Thank you for your time and never forget that freedom only rings when it rings for all of us.
