Until Oct 19 it's $150 for failure to yield, and that's often the only consequence of killing a pedestrian with a car

What would be the tax implications of depaving every dark green street

Look at how awful and criminal our city is and how bad and not at all charming and perfect it is
Google Street View of 5572 Falkland St. It is a REALLY skinny, bright red, wood-shingled, east coast, postcard-perfect 19th century row house. God it's so fucking cute

Btw there are old lovely 15 foot wide houses here in Halifax, check out Falkland St. I know 9 and 15 are pretty significantly different numbers but maybe that still helps your case in one way or another!

Genuinely we should start riding a bike over the COLT counter every hour as an experiment

How about we stop "maintaining" all the random roadside and median bits of grass that don't need to be mowed and short and maintained, and let them be wild, which would free up a little labour for this

It was downtown, but the Commons is even more impressive, since being more open means there's more wind (outside the obvious wind tunnel streets)!

Addendum: cutting edge models last year have equivalents in all capabilities today that can run fully locally on a personal computer. A lot of surprisingly small businesses are running their own local models on their own servers. These big stupid companies can collapse without killing enterprise AI.

And if you go back to the dot-com era, you get a similar thing where people were investing billions into absolute bullshit in case it was the thing that broke through and become the single dominant breakout. And it was all laughable and stupid. But the world DID change after the crash.

Like I'm sorry to say it but I work in business analysis and a machine that can go through and vibes-classify 50k lines of a spreadsheet in a way that it's specifically suited to can save literally months of work in a one-shot prompt. But some of these use cases they're pushing are ungodly dumb.

Probably we'll see something more like dot-com where there's a massive market correction about what part of this sector is actually productive (in the pure-market sense of the word) and it gets massively less ANNOYING overnight without a corresponding check on environmental effects etc.

I don't keep money in my balance but I have a big orange button at the bottom in the Wallet section of the app that says "purchase a new pass". Does that go away when you have money in your balance?

Yup, the problem isn't that the work can't be done, or even that it's particularly difficult to make it happen on a level as powerful as a government or large development corporation, it's that the scale of the work exceeds the scale of the will

There are already FGNs but of course it's moving at a glacial pace. Iirc one reason it hasn't been converted already is because the past land use, including the car dealerships, fucked the land so much that it would need many millions of cleanup first. Ofc, the ones who fucked it won't pay for it.

Does that mean all the bike lanes that merge into one traffic lane at certain intersections (e.g., Bell, Windsor) have to wait until all traffic passes (never) to proceed through the intersection?

Bicycles aren't considered vehicles in the TSA (they're "conveyances") but there may be other rules that are relevant to that

You might be underestimating how willing people who ask such questions are to walk when it's raining, which I find really sad. I think experiencing rain is really important for connecting to the world you live in.

We could have even made it one-way for cars and two-way for buses, and made either Windsor or Agricola one-way in the other direction to balance it out making way for protected bike lanes there

Abolish This @abolish-this.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I dunno, I think a solid portion of it might be the feeling of momentum and inertia, like how babies get rocked to sleep in cars and strollers. I don't think the feeling of zoning out people get from driving is inherently that different from the zoning out people get while walking, except the risk.

Abolish This @abolish-this.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I genuinely think transportation rest is built into us as a species. How else would you walk the enormous distances that used to be required for survival? Our brain forces us into it. The question is, so we want that to happen while walking, or while driving

When we ask the mayor if he'll house our friends he'll never listen, will he? When he does, we'll know And when I die, dump my body on the lawn of the ones who killed me This is not a joke. This is not a joke!

Abolish This @abolish-this.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I have told many people in my life and written it into a song that I play often, including with the phrase "this is not a joke", that my body should be dumped on the lawn of whoever killed me. However, the general understanding of this I've fostered is that it's city hall, province house, etc.

I would be fine with bus lanes and no bike lanes, although it would be a bit of a bummer to see it basically not change in feel at all. I just wish they would do something, though.

Abolish This @abolish-this.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I don't think I like that - the sidewalks are already uncomfortably small on Quinpool without also being used as bus stop waiting areas. And something major would have to end by the time that multipurpose area becomes trees

This doesn't include bus lanes. The bus icon in the multi-purpose areas is for bus stops
