Craftsman focusing on blades from the 15-16th centuries, mainly from the HRE. Also, apparently I enjoy directing/organizing photoshoots. If you want to support this side project, consider supporting my Patreon at www.patreon.com/bladesnladies

So I suddenly remembered that I still have this account, wanted to share my favorite pic from a photoshoot I had something to do with aaaand the immediately placed "explicit" label reminded me why I stopped posting here. I don't have the energy to appeal autolabels, even if it tends to work. Meh.

A pretty special belt hook for a danse macabre themed dussack. Turned out pretty well, especially considering that I only spent about 50 hours on learning the skills. (I was thinking and theorizing a lot about it since my teens, but that's somewhat different than actually doing it)

I'm done with a blinged-up heavy l'Olonnais dussack. Pommel is hollow and it (along with the cross and shell) is japanned.

Short grip sharp Rugger with byknife with plum grip slabs. Also, the review by @skallagrim.bsky.social went up recently, check it out! (and I still didn't have 15 minutes to watch it hmpppfff)

I obviously had to organize a shoot with the blinged-up Messer before I shipped it out.

Strap divider for a baldric, based on a late 15th century statue, also custom shell and cross for a pimped-out l'Olonnais dussack.

We just managed to snag 550kg of old growth buxus sempervirens on the company side. Due to invasive, species-specific moths and a blight, such old specimens likely won't happen on the planet anymore. These were planted in the 18th century, and died about 5 years ago.

Late period Messer / transitional saber all done except for the grip. The spine starts off at 10mm thick, but distal taper and a quite flat triangular cross-section keep it pretty light.

If I'm bitching about something, and then that something changes, then I think the correct thing to do is to point out the change as well. Explicit label got removed.

Also, let me check real quick if bluesky changed anything or they'll relabel this as porn again. Pic from a fantasy shoot with a spatha.

I'm still alive, doing a lot of stuff, I just have a hard time remembering to post here. I'll try being better at it.

And a fresh scabbard plus a new leather grip wrap for a Landsknecht longsword I did a while ago. Also the bypieces are "fake" in this case as per buyer's request.

Adam Bodorics historical cutler @abodorics.bsky.social · 02/06/2025
I also did a bunch of higher status bypieces.

Finished pics of the scabbard I posted about earlier.

So I don't know how quick other people work, but this 6 hours of leatherwork definitely felt like a speedrun.

Scabbards and a sheath. The unfinished one is a parchment-lined scabbard core for a very expensive Katzbalger. The wood is 1.2mm thick, and it'll get a linen wrap, on which I'll build the subsheaths for a couple of bypieces, build the foundation for the decor, and wrap it in reindeer leather.

Busy sorting through the raw photos of the most recent photoshoot. We did a lot of pictures, both SFW and NSFW. I see no point in posting any of the latter here, but have a sampling of the former. Rebeka was great and luckily she enjoyed it a lot.

way yet, and at least here I don't know of anyone else with any intention of changing that. Museum staff often know little of their stuff because the local system is garbage and they don't have time for research. This is just for Hungary, so I'd wager there are loads more in HRE territory. 2/2

I'm starting to think that our perception might be a bit skewed and it might be a bit of documentation bias. I helped ID 3 freshly found large Ruggers in the last 2 years, documented 4 in Visegrád with 2 still in storage and I have leads on multiple more. These are not published in an accessible 1/2

I usually am - I made multiple not great choices some years back and I'm trying very hard to make up for them. 70 hours a week with over 25 years of experience fueled by caffeine and self-loathing yields a LOT of stuff.

Compared to these, an actual cross is a huge step up, even with 6-10mm the gaps at the shoulders. Most original Messer crosses I've seen would loosen after taking 1-2 hits, but would stay functional for several more. Sucks if it's supposed to take impacts, but pretty great for a failsafe imo.

Adam Bodorics historical cutler @abodorics.bsky.social · 21/02/2025
+ there are several originals with steel bolsters that don't extend past the blade - even more with brass bolsters, and even more with no bolsters whatsoever. Nagels often go through wood, with thin, round shafts. Almost like hand protection was a failsafe, not something to actively rely on.

Getting there...

I hope it will serve you well for a good while! As for perceived differences in fencing, I think it's more about the almost complete lack of hand protection - though that might be due to a bit of overreliance on quillons. I have thoughts on that topic, and someday I'll have time to write them down.

The end is nigh! The first production model light and heavy l'Olonnais dussacks are almost fully assembled. The heavy is 940g, PoB at 104mm from the cross, the light is 795g@83mm.

Crosses fitted, also a comparison pic of the two variants. While they are similar, the differences go far beyond the yelman or it's lack - profile and curvature is subtly different, and they have completely different distal tapers as well.

l'Olonnais dussack crosses mostly done except for some more cleanup. Thumbrings for the heavies and a more open and versatile (and rarer among originals afaik) cross for the lights.

I neglected bsky for a bit, because frankly, I got frustrated with their labeling system. But I'm still alive and I'd still very much prefer if bsky worked out fine for replacing twitter, soooo back to posting.

It's done. I'm not sure I'll do many more of these with blunt blades. While it's lighter and longer than the Kelvingrove original, 1245 grams still make it a hefty piece, even though it's pretty flexible. 845mm overall with a 696mm long blade.

Experimental blunt Katzbalger in progress. The grip is sanded antler. It still needs a bit of cleanup, a ferrule for the antler and final assembly.

Also, the raw images came in from the latest photoshoot. Sasha was a joy to work with, she enjoyed the whole thing and I managed to teach her to do a pretty decent Eintrusthau on top of everything else.

Yeah, the moderation is not great. And self-labeling does nothing either. I hate twatter, I'd REALLY prefer using bsky, but sadly it kinda sucks.

Bsky labeled the censored montage as "sexually explicit", so I won't waste time on censorship in the future. Also, Zornhut on both sides.

Progress on a cute little Messer and a set of Portuguese table knives. The former is a custom design based on customer specs, the latter is based on a painting.
