I mean, is she right-coded? She seems like a Nice Woman who happens to be Christian, and has expressed no opinions about any groups that American conservative Christians tend to have odious opinions about, or any presidents they tend to worship. An Aaron Sorkin fantasy of conservatism.

I think inertia certainly pulls that way - it's a lot easier for the world to just let the US handle all the stuff that it handles. But every time it elects someone who abuses that power, it wears away at the willingness to let it continue to play a central role in the world.

The recent, and quite good, adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude is around 16 hours long. Could have been a bit shorter but it certainly isn't padded and captures the book quite well, despite the immense challenge involved.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to be lectured on treating others with respect by people who genuinely believe that they are the master race and democracy should be dismantled so they can rule the techno-utopian future.

For the record, the answers to the two questions above are a) no, and b) yes, but it's a lot harder than you think, especially for men. And neither one has any bearing on the killing of civilians on October 7th, even if those civilians had served in the IDF in the past.

Abigail Nussbaum @abigailnussbaum.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Far too many people on my feed and in my mentions are debating which Israelis are inherently killable. Guys, the issue isn't whether all Israelis serve in the IDF, or whether you can get out of conscription. It's that anyone who says "all members of group X are guilty" is advocating genocide.

Abigail Nussbaum @abigailnussbaum.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I'm also getting really tired of the idea that being upset about things you read on the internet gives you carte blanche to say anything, no matter how vile. I've been upset about a lot of stuff in the last three years and I've somehow stopped short of advocating genocide.

An obsession with the Talmud as some kind of Protocols of the Elders of Zion that reveals the perfidious global Jewish conspiracy is pretty endemic in the antisemitic left. Bringing it up is a sign to consign someone to the outer darkness.

Abigail Nussbaum @abigailnussbaum.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
This is so irrelevant to the issue of the murder of civilians on October 7th that I'm starting to think you're a bot.

Abigail Nussbaum @abigailnussbaum.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
And my point is that whether or not you do has no bearing on whether it's OK to murder you.

I would proffer the bold opinion that even people who once served in the armed forces of a country you disapprove of do not deserve the be burned alive in their homes.

Abigail Nussbaum @abigailnussbaum.bsky.social · 08/10/2026

This thought brought to you, obviously, by the season finales of both Lanterns and Ted Lasso, both of which promise to become something different and more compelling in their next outing, with absolutely no indication that we should believe that promise.

Think about it: how often in the last decade have you white-knuckled the first season of a show that was really dragging only to get some promising developments in the last few minutes of S1? And then when you come back for S2, it's straight back to dragging and withholding.

An important corollary to the Surf Dracula tweet that I think should be talked about more, now that we're basically inundated with these types of shows, is that most of them don't get renewed, but even the ones that are don't turn into the weekly adventures of Surf Dracula in the second season.
Screenshot of a tweet from user @topherfluence: "back in the day if u did a tv show called surf dracula you'd see that fool surfing every week in new adventures but in the streaming era the entire 1st season gotta be a long ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get ot see him surf for 5 min in the finale"

In much the same way that children of divorce picked better partners, children of toxic parents might be better parents themselves.

I’ve come around to the idea that emdashes are good for reading text online, but for print and e-readers you should opt for endashes with spaces around them.

Abigail Nussbaum @abigailnussbaum.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
If you bring up the mid-century boom in divorces, shouldn't you also mention that that number has gone way down, because people have gotten better at finding partners they get along with? And if there is a boom in children disowning parents, wouldn't we expect the same improvement to follow?

A lot of things in the last three years have shocked me, but perhaps none quite as much as the complete inability of large swathes of the left to criticize Israel without lapsing into virulent antisemitism. Such a profound failure on both the moral and pragmatic level.

Compartmentalization. Find the closest place you know how to get to, and then you only have to remember the directions from there. Plus, get a navigator. As a teenager that was my job. My mom would drive and I would in the passenger seat with the map.

The illustration for today's chapter is by Inger Edelfeldt, a Swedish author and illustrator. I really like how it foregrounds the orcs and makes them distinctive as well as scary. More of Edelfeldt's art can be found here: tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Inger_E...
