I doubt it was all bags, but certainly my explaining that I had low blood pressure and might faint was taken badly and held things up

They put me in the priority queue and there was a bit of a wait. Mostly my problem was there was some sort of misunderstanding when they had my bag and it took a long time to clear up. Not sure why but a manager rescued me and apologised.

Was there for other reasons recently and there’s definitely a knock on effect to accessibility in the rest of the museum. There was no seating available, the lifts were out and I had to stand around a longer than usual time at security even though they fast tracked me for health reasons.

If you lived in a time before train timetables but had train timetable brain, the catalogue of ships must have ruled

It’s also cool not to go if it’s going to be stressful. If you don’t go, there’s always maps and books for getting a feel for the landscape.

I’ve not been there in a while so I wouldn’t be able to guarantee it. When I was there the bus service that goes from the road outside the site to the centre of town near the museum was often just as fast

Used to work there. You can get the site done quickly and pleasantly by going immediately after it opens. I do think it is worth it for context on the museum and sense of place.

Got to meet a few people who did this when I was working as a FLO and they seemed to have a really positive experience. They skipped a lot of the things about the treasure process that frustrate people and were really proud to show off their finds.

Recommend looking into Moretum. It’s more of a pesto but very Sword and the Sandwich because the best literary source on it is a high epic spoof about making lunch and the earliest attestation of e pluribus unum

Writing about your excellent editing skills is a bit like walking onto the Greek tragic stage and doing a speech about how you don’t like or need that one deity.

No worries! I only mention so people can find out more. The project record for the original is here: latininscriptions.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/xml/AN_2005_... the sound is pretty much identical to the recording of the surviving parts of the pipe

It’s pretty funny. I only have mildly amusing namesakes. There’s someone who publishes on fecal transplants as well. I don’t think any of us uses the diaeresis

Have set up a goodreads account to try and disambiguate myself from the person who publishes Amish romance books under my name. Anyone know how to do this without claiming books I didn’t write?

This is also the article in which I gently suggest that Pater scholarship needs to treat Schliemann as the massive weirdo that he was.

Plus Pater never saw it, so there's an intriguing mystery here. Plus I'd really like to get more historians of archaeology into Pater, who sees Bronze Age material as art in its own right very early while everyone else was mocking it

The object itself is not making anyone's top 10 list of exciting finds from Mycenae (image from Karo Die Schachtgräber von Mykenai)
A black and white photo of a little metal flower. There is a short stalk of corroded black metal with a small ring of petals around the top. It has seen better days.

My new article is up. It identifies an object that was important in the early reception of Mycenae and explores why Walter Pater picked such an obscure object as a key example. academic.oup.com/jvc/advance-...

If we want museum workers, precarious academics and others to be able to make knowledge, we need at least an understanding that academic publishing is designed to exclude them. Meanwhile the government wants to give my book to AI companies that will use it to make money.

Disaster averted on current article. I’m so careful to design my research around materials that are in the public domain and things I can guarantee access to. But still a reviewer can demand I use an edition of a 19th century source that costs more money than is in my bank account.

Once again, my carefully laid sewing plans are disrupted by the need to turn a cute fabric into a little top.
The frame is completely filled with black silk crepe de chine fabric, spread flat on a table top. The fabric is printed with a pattern of tumbling Greek vases, depicted in a blobby painted style. The figures on the vases race, fight lions and engage in more intimate activities

Unfortunately I was made aware of magical girl Schliemann last night and now I have to share her with you.
It’s an anime style drawing of a pretty girl with short red hair, a Tyrolean hat, a safari shirt, short shorts and thigh highs. She has a notebook and a rope and it looks like there might be a fluffy tail poking out of her shorts. Of course there are pink sparkles and a Trojan horse background.

Today I bought a felt dachshund in a Christmas hat for my friend who wants a real one, joked with the salesperson that it is probably more ethical to get her one that is just for Christmas. Then I turned around and saw the irl version walking towards us. #TinyJoys
A beautiful brown long haired dachshund, wearing a Christmas hat and a red knitted jumper with bands of reindeer and stars on it.The same dog sitting up for a treat. The dog is wearing a red Christmas jumper and a harness with a pattern of Christmas puddings.
