Since 2019, every other province has raised its minimum wage by between 25 and 50 percent while Alberta's hasn't moved, and with prices up 25% over that time, minimum wage workers here have seen their real standard of living fall by 20%, according to economist Jim Stanford. afl.org/wp-content/u...

Alberta's oil and gas industry made $22 billion in profits in just the second quarter of this year, and over that same period it employed fewer people and paid them less. None of that extra money went into the pockets of everyday Albertans. We're definitely being robbed, but not by Ottawa.

It wouldn't cut production, jobs or royalties the way cutting off the flow of oil entirely would, and the money raised from the tax could go to the workers and industries Trump's tariffs are already hurting.

These states also happen to be key states deciding control of Congress this midterm election season. That's why AFL President Gil McGowan is calling for an export tax on oil, raising prices at the pumps enough in those key states to make Americans feel it.

As Trump's trade war against Canada escalates, it's time to push back. Sixty percent of the crude the United States imports comes from Canada. The refineries in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ohio are built to run on Alberta bitumen, and the pipelines to feed them anything else don't exist.

Aside from everything else that's wrong with private healthcare, Bill 11 doesn't train a single new doctor or hire a single new nurse for this private system. Same doctors, same operating rooms, except some of those hours now go to whoever can pay, which means longer waits for those who can't.

Since July 31, anyone in Alberta with enough money can skip the MRI line and pay their way to the front. On September 1, the same thing will start happening with surgery, when doctors will be allowed to spend part of their week operating on patients who pay privately.

They're comfortable saying it out loud because nobody has made them pay for it. They have a government that works for them. Their taxes go down, their subsidies go up, and workers' rights get overridden at all levels of government whenever it's convenient.

Canadian billionaire Tobi Lütke, the CEO of Shopify, compared pensioners to legal dependents and said they shouldn't be allowed to vote, while endorsing a system where people making over $500,000/yr get five votes each. Billionaires in Canada are awfully comfortable saying these things out loud.
