good morning. I strongly suspect that we don't really know (or agree) what geographic ranges are, and therefore, our estimates of how species' ranges are shifting in the Anthropocene are uninterpretable. I wrote something about this: doi.org/10.1111/2041... and I'll share the main findings...

Measuring the edges of species' geographic ranges
The fundamental unit of spatial ecology is a species range: the geographical area that it occupies. Species ranges are delineated by range edges (also known as boundaries or limits). Why range edg...

I am recruiting Ph.D. students this cycle. Students interested in deep-sea fishes and phylogenetic comparative methods are an especially good fit.

You don't need to be an expert to participate! Here's how to join: 1. Download iNaturalist (100% free, nonprofit, & community-powered) 2. Find your local wild nature 3. Take pictures — they don't have to be fancy or perfect! 4. Share your photos on iNaturalist
Step 1: Download iNaturalist — the most frequently used community science platform for the City Nature Challenge. (The app is free.)Step 2: Find your local nature. Wildlife only! (aka, no gardens or pets)Step 3: Take pictures — they don't have to be fancy. You can use your smartphone.Step 4: Share your photos, aka 'observations,' to iNaturalist. This gives scientists and decision-makers critical data about urban nature.

The answer to my previous post? Convective instabilities! 🌪️ I'm thrilled to share our new paper in PNAS! Alongside @rmtzgarcia.bsky.social, we challenge the dominant paradigm that spatial self-organization inherently increases ecosystem resilience. (1/3) 🧪🌍

New paper out examining fish food web degradation in the Anthropocene. We show the structure of aquatic food webs are changing-- even when species richness doesn’t. These signals are strongly associated with decreases in body size within fish communities. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... 🌐🐠🐡🦈🐟

Degradation of fish food webs in the Anthropocene
The decrease in body size driven by the selective species turnover is widely altering fish food web topology and function.

🚨 For those with access to collections of bird specimens: we are looking for collaborators who can quickly measure bulbuls/greenbuls (Pycnonotidae) for a project on intraspecific trait variation. We need 100s specimens measured from common species in return for co-authorship. Anyone up for it? 🧪🌐🪶

Out now in Biology Letters, my latest paper tackles an apparently simple question: how many characters are needed to reconstruct a phylogeny? TL;DR: in most cases between 100 and 500, more than a substantial portion of morphological datasets, but the story is more complex... doi.org/10.1098/rsbl...

The Rybnik dam reservoir has higher than usual water temperatures because of the heated water from the power plant. This might be why the Wels catfish get so big. Other 200 cm-long Silurus glanis were estimated to be about 70 years old under "normal" conditions. This 292 cm long is possibly younger
