Some marginalia from my full reading of the Pope's Encyclical on AI this morning: - AI does not love - AI does not intrinsically value truth or justice - AI does not experience hunger - AI does not experience communion with the natural world or any sort of higher power

Reading Peter Gray and Douglas Rushkoff as a democratic school nerd in 2015 vs reading them in 2026 after we've all seen a lot change... I'm free writing reflections and maybe by November there will be an essay in them somewhere.

Read "How to Hide An Empire" because Bsky said to and now I'm pushing it on all my classmates. So thanks!

The kids are determined to sew gowns before they sew pillows and get VR Minecraft running on outdated machines. The cat is determined to nap on my torts textbook. The garden is determined to flower more in spite of beetles and drought. Singing children, snoring cat, swaying plants... Tuesday.

The person most supportive of my starting grad school is the cat, who sees me sit to work and immediately runs over for a lap nap. He doesn't do the reading, but he is really into the sudden increase in nap opportunities 🐈

This looks amazing! I still use notes I took during the Data Feminism book club ages ago. My schedule can't fit another class right now (I wish!), but if yours can go sign up!

The kids move freely on campus, socialize, play, and eat as they want. The school cat has been having tummy trouble, so we're limiting his sunshine, free movement, and food "for his own good." His recess and meal times are being controlled by kids who control their own recess and meal times 😅

It's tender to host a makerspace. I teach that any tool I have is one they can learn to use. I encourage exploration, experiments, realness. I trust and they feel it (and write "Trust Your Self"!) And I have the sharps locked up, available upon request and with supervision. This is also trust.
Not my art! A linoleum block print found in the Makerspace that reads "TRUST YOUR SELF" in black-green ink

Is Flock the only mass surveillance tool/network that people should be worried about? No. But it is an entry point for people from all walks of life to the fight against mass surveillance and I'm glad people are paying attention and taking action.

Overheard hiking: mom: "I know you want to, but we can't go tomorrow because [guy] won't be available and I don't know how to do it!" preteen daughter: "Why can't we just look up how?!" Like... I feel for mom but love hearing a kid assert that not knowing something yet isn't a reason to quit 🔥

9yo reaching for me as she hops onto the slackline: "Help me!" me: "Leaning on me feeeels like help because it's easier, but then you'll learn where I am instead of where your balance is..." 9yo: ... 9yo: "Like roller skating? Like roller skating!" And she practiced until she could do it. A win!

Crocheting as a socially acceptable(ish) way to fidget in meetings has been great, and now I want to unlock fidget-crocheting things I can sell at holiday markets to bring in more classroom supply money. Should probably make flower crowns... but I kindof want to make these puffballs with eyes!
There was very hairy blue yarn that I decided to crochet into a sphere, stuff with fluff, and felt large eyes onto. This picture is of the possessed dustbunny looking thing that is the result.

Favorite childhood coach said always train a level ahead of where you intend to compete, so that competing feels easy. Definitely unrelated: back to school is less tiring than it has been in years when I haven't worked camps allll summer. Camp is so tiring and good and tiring and...

Autistic kid comes in mid-summer to visit and greets me with "Let's run a lap?" All year, I had an hourly alarm and would invite kids to run with me when it went off. This kid never joined, but he knew the laps were friendly and joyful times. That THAT'S how he greeted me?!?! Oh my heart...

Tempting as it is to say slowness to admit I can't (at all or in a role's bounds) provide what's needed for a family is compassion and optimism... we're all better served when I admit it's ego and get humble fast.

If the insurance wanted to use my car to measure sudden breaking, average speed, distance of trips, and speed around turns, for safety, okay. But they want to use my phone to track ALL personal movement, locations, and Bluetooth use. Driving or not. That data is worth way more than a $100 coupon 😶‍🌫️

Just finished The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami (and started Conditional Citizens). Car insurance co. is emailing that they'll charge $100 more if I decline to let them track my location, motion, and phone use (always, not just while in my car). For safety reasons. AAAAHHHHHHHHH

Tuned in and initiative-taking co-facilitators make such a huge difference in my own and kids' experience of a space. We're aligned so we don't contradict each other. We own the schedule so we design transitions well. We caretake each other and the kids. Summer Camp life is... different 👀

Aghast at how often I'm actively listening to a child tell me something and an adult walks up and starts talking. Over the child. Like they're not mid-thought. Behavior they would never tolerate from a kid! (Behavior I also see when adult conversation is in a language they don't speak 👀)

Summer classroom rearranging: I want to replace the door of a closet with a long curtain for color and texture and ease of access. I'm pausing because that makes one less secure-ish place for kids to hide in an emergency... ☹️

A week ago I started saying "I've gotten really fast at typing and let my handwriting muscles disappear! Time for day X of practice!" and then sitting down to fill a page. 2 days in, the kids joyfully replied it's a great idea because my handwriting is so messy. Today they asked to join... AND DID!

I let the kids play with the hose. I let them dig holes. I let them pick seeds to plant. I let them tape sticks together and build tiny mud castles. I also let them play video games. The result? They game! They also go outside, a lot! They ask for math! They asked today for handwriting practice!?!

Who has guides for supporting K-12 students when they lose a parent? Training staff based on what I've done before and read on my own is fine, but it would be so helpful to have a resource I could go through with them before these moments where it's needed.
