Who Is Photographing Whom? (Lucky SHD 100) A monument is photographed. Film photographs the photographers. April says nothing. #filmphotography #lomography #blackandwhite #monochrome #35mm #fedmicron #luckyshd100 #bnw #ClassicMono #monument #analog #halfframe #lomopunk #expiredfilm ##MotionBlur
On Sretensky Boulevard, someone raises a phone to eye level.
The blur conceals the details. Only the gesture remains: a person attempting to preserve something.
Fed Micron does not yet know what that something is.
Not yet.

Series: Variations on a Theme "...with a Film Across Moscow"
Location: Sretensky Boulevard, Moscow

Film format: 35mm half-frame

Every photograph preserves memory while simultaneously becoming someone else's memory.

A person took out a phone.
The phone took out an image.
The image had not arrived yet.
So everyone waited for the second frame.
The answer turns out to be surprisingly simple. On the other side of the lens stands the monument to Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov. History, bronze, and public memory become the subject of another photograph. A curious chain emerges: the monument watches the city, the passerby photographs the monument, and the film photographs them both.

Memory prefers to cast in bronze not who we became, but who we dreamed of being at dawn.

The monument stood still.
The person stood opposite.
The photograph stood between them.
Curiously, it turned out to be the busiest one.

“At the Confluence of Centuries” (Lucky SHD 100 New) Spire by the stream. Through bare spring branches Cathedral domes gleam. #filmphotography #lomography #blackandwhite #monochrome #cityscape #bw #landscape #35mm #fedmicron #luckyshd100 #bnw #ClassicMono
River and canal.
Buildings from different centuries
await the same May.

At the junction of the Moskva River and the Vodootvodny Canal, time behaves in unusual ways. A modest nineteenth-century gatekeeper's house stands beside the Imperial River Yacht Club. Behind them rise the domes of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and the buildings of the former Red October factory. For a moment, the city appears to abandon chronology altogether, allowing several eras to occupy the same landscape at once. The photograph merely accepted the invitation.

Philosophy: A city comes alive where different centuries engage in a quiet dialogue.

Bare spring branches act as a great fine-detail test for Lucky SHD 100 scanned on the Noritsu LS-1100. The background architecture and brick textures retain sharp graphic clarity without soft edges.

Nameless Lenin: A Conversation That Never Happened (FED Micron+Lucky SHD 100) In the first frame Lenin observed the photographer. In the second frame the photographer observed Lenin. No winner could be determined. Both sides maintained silence. #filmphotography #35mm #fedmicron #luckyshd100 #bnw
Marble holds the gaze.
The artist's name is erased,
The leader stays stern.

A direct half-length portrait brings forward one of the most sculpturally convincing monuments to Lenin in the Muzeon collection. Moving past standard Soviet mass production, this white marble piece stands out with its refined execution: the confident turn of the shoulders, a hand tucked into the pocket, natural folds along the lapel, and a piercing, squinting gaze fixed directly on the viewer. Though preserving high academic mastery, the sculpture has lost its creator's name, registered in museum archives simply as "Author Unknown." Captured on Lucky SHD 100 film with the half-frame FED Micron against a crisp April sky, the historical icon turns into a study of pure sculptural art.

Artwork: Lenin

Material: Marble
Location: Moscow, Arts Park «Muzeon»

Lab & Scanner: printbypro / Noritsu LS-1100
Philosophy: Great craftsmanship remains great even when the artist's name surrenders to the identity of his subject.

Xtol delicately renders the marble's midtones: bright spring sunlight hits the left side of the figure without clipping highlights on the forehead or suit lapels, while expired Lucky SHD 100 lends a velvety micro-contrast against the bare tree branches.I asked a question.
The marble kept the silence.
An experienced agent.

In the first photograph, he was observing.
In the second, the stringer moved closer.
Fed Micron has no zoom lens, so negotiations with history had to be conducted in person. A few steps forward, a low angle, an attempt to establish direct visual contact.
Lenin listened carefully.
Did not interrupt.
Did not argue.
Did not reply.
Stone is sometimes far more disciplined than people.

Philosophy: Stone keeps secrets better than any human, for its silence spans centuries.

The stringer stepped closer.
Lenin refused to step back.
They looked at each other.
The result was a draw.

The low-angle perspective emphasizes the sculptured jawline, brow, and suit collar. April sunlight highlights the stone's tactile surface, converting this anonymous monument into a dramatic, almost tangible study.

Xtol development at this ultra-close range shines brilliantly: micro-textures, tiny chips, and marble grains on the chin and nose remain fully visible. Expired Lucky SHD 100 offers a rich tonal span from deep shadows in the eye sockets to clean highlights on the shoulder.

White Square: Monologue on a Non-Existent Hat. Part V-VIII (Lucky SHD 100New) Oh look, it is me! Am I turning into hat? No, just Nadine here. #LomoPunk #StreetPortrait #FilmPhotography #35mm #35mmFilm #BlackAndWhite #BWFilm #BW #Monochrome #ClassicMono #FilmIsNotDead #Girl #fedmicron #luckyshd100
Hat sits on the head.
What stays hidden under brim?
Could it be a thought?

The White Square turns into a stage where Nadine Froh plays herself — and everyone passing by.
The hat becomes a metaphor for a gesture that needs no explanation.
The city watches silently: glass and dome, office and church, all breathing in one rhythm.
It’s not a walk — it’s a dialogue between chance and form.

Philosophy: “We don’t seek meaning — we just try it on, like a hat.”

A tiny frame, half the length of an ordinary human glance. Within it, Chinese silver that fell asleep in the previous decade meets a Soviet shutter mechanism. The grain is as thick as morning porridge, the contrast has departed for Berlin along with Nadine, and the details have slipped into half-frame non-existence. “On the Harm of Reading or The Bookstall Absurdity” (Silberra PAN200)

The book’s a virus,
absorbing the gaze,
returning silence.

“The Danger of Sealed Meanings on Old Arbat” (Silberra PAN200)

Books on a sidewalk.
Fingers reach for the typed text.
The world tips over.

Watch Nadine Froh risking everything by touching second-hand book merchandise. Back then, Old Arbat still cultivated books—those questionable carriers of static information that cause strabismus and an urge to move to Berlin. A book is a dead-end for civilization. It forces a person to freeze while the world around them blurs in a dynamic, subconscious ecstasy of souvenir consumption. Take care of yourself, don't read. Buy matryoshkas instead.

Stone has folded hands -
angel gazes down, blurred, soft,
leaves whisper their shade.

The focus drifted away, but the shadow remained - a memory of something that doesn’t need to be clear.
The angel doesn’t ask; it simply exists, a mistake of light turned into meaning.
Here, sharpness is replaced by breath - and it feels more alive than stone.

Philosophy: “Sometimes obscurity is the only way to see the truth.”Closer - and more dread:
angel reaches toward the lens,
focus slipped away.

Two frames. One subject. Neither in focus. The focus flew away — like a soul, like meaning, like the very idea of a sharp image. The angel at the necropolis of the Donskoy Monastery has been standing here for decades, perhaps centuries. It is used to being looked at. But on this September day in 2018, it refused to be captured. The Nikon Lite Touch Zoom 120 ED tried — and missed. The expired Tri-X 400, stored under unknown conditions, added its own grain, its own unpredictability. And here we are — two blurred angels. One looks down, hands folded. The other — almost head-on, almost threatening, almost embracing. Both — out of focus. Both — more alive than any sharp frame ever could be. Because blur is not a defect. Blur is a state of being. The angel does not want to be a document. The angel wants to be a sensation.

The stringer turned the Canon Prima on himself and realized it was time for a serious talk. He raised an index finger to the sky, furrowed his brow under a worn cap, and set his face into the stone expression of a man who knows far too much about Old Arbat. The 1991 Soviet Svema motion picture film froze in respect: standing before it was not a mere passerby, but the director of this entire urban phantasmagoria. The finger served as a warning: the next frame would reveal the ultimate secret, so don't you dare blink.

Frame Two: The Captain's Shadow on Tverskoy Boulevard (Ilford XP2 400)

Half a face in shadow,
The director counts cartridges.
Autumn on the boulevard.

“Vertical split, or Noir of the era of developed lull” (Version 1.0)

A shift of a couple of degrees - and the light on the Ilford XP2 film breaks differently, building classical noir dramaturgy right on a bench of Tverskoy Boulevard. Half of the face is hidden in deep shadow from the foliage, as if hinting at the dual life of archival scripts, unshot sequels about Captain Ander, and the conspiracy theory of the Napoleonic Wars that Andrejs Abols dissects with cold elegance. Here, the Industar cuts off everything superfluous, leaving only the strict geometry of the bench, the fence of the boulevard, and this motionless gaze into the lens of a man who is used to existing at the intersection of epochs, formats, and closed laboratories. The frame captures the moment when reality splits into light and shadow, and the old mechanics of the camera record what history failed to capture.

Philosophy: "Shadow is merely the legitimate part of the frame that neither censorship nor the sun has yet managed to illuminate with their false floodlights."

Second frame from the meeting on Tverskoy Boulevard. The shadow covering half his face creates a noir effect - as if fate itself reminded us: truth is never complete. A man whose film was destroyed, whose wax army numbers 3,500 figures, whose library holds 300 books about Napoleon - sits on a bench and knows: half the truth will always remain in shadow. And that's okay.Frame One: Meeting on the Steamship of Modernity (Ilford XP2 400)

Tin birds are flying,
The director freezes in the lens.
A parsec to someone else's war.

“Reconnaissance in force on Tverskoy Boulevard, or Captain Ander stranded in Moscow's September” (Version 1.1)

September 2014 scattered silver light over Moscow, lost between the tree canopies of Tverskoy Boulevard and spectacle lenses. Moving away from the walls of the Cinema House, we sat on a bench - those who shared television airtime in the mid-90s like the last piece of film stock. Andrejs Abols - director whose archive-drowned sequel about Captain Ander quietly matures in parallel worlds, historian of Napoleonic battles, and a man who knows everything about the falsehood of manifestos - froze for a split second before the sharp glass of the Industar. This is neither reportage nor a formal portrait. It is the fixation of an entity that momentarily broke away from building cardboard divisions and pondering why Napoleon never intended to conquer Russia. The Ilford XP2 film swallowed the street noise, leaving only a monochrome engraving of time: the face of a man who knows for sure that any plots - from battles to "Civil Wager" - will sooner or later end in credits, leaving behind only optics, the chemistry of the "Sweg" lab, and this long, direct gaze.

A man sat on wooden slats, staring back into the glass eye of a rangefinder. Inside his briefcase lay three unshot films, a Urals rock concert, and a couple of unfinished hypotheses regarding the fabric of space. His gaze was so intensely focused that a bird flying past froze mid-air just to be safe, while the Zorki’s shutter fired out of sheer embarrassment. At that precise moment in Sokol Park, no one was searching for anything, yet the fulcrum point revealed itself anyway — anchored right between 1/250th of a second and aperture f/8.

Bio Note:
Eugene S. Volovich is a photographer, film director, and designer based in Yekaterinburg, Russia. A representative of a renowned Ural art lineage and grandson of internationally acclaimed graphic artist Vitaly Volovich. His work spans studio portraiture, urban documentary photography, rock concerts, club culture, music videos, and non‑fiction cinema. Known as a collector of faces and visual identities, he creates a contemporary chronicle of the Ural region."The Collector of Faces Waiting for His Own Portrait" (Ilford XP2 400 Super)

He sits as if checking whether he has accidentally become part of someone else’s idea. The bench is convinced it’s the real portrait. The park briefly forgets it’s a park and tries to be a background. And the camera records all of this with the calm only objects possess when they don’t realize they’re participating in history.

Through the foliage of Moscow's Memorial Park near the Sokol metro station, a Ural wind breaches through, smelling of ozone, guitar overdrive, and expired film stock. Eugene Volovich — the one-man band from Yekaterinburg, collector of faces, studio master, and chronicler of night clubs where rock concerts melt into a documentary archive "in the fields" — sat down on a wooden bench. The ƒ8 aperture holds the geometry of the frame with alarming clarity, while the hero himself, with a post-ironic half-smirk, watches reality lose its balance. This shot is a sort of physics of survival on Ilford XP2 film: there are no heavy diagnoses here, but there is an absolute understanding that if the world around you starts shaking, you can always lean on your own leather jacket, the good old Zorki, and a couple of meters of surviving celluloid.

An Overheard Dialogue Near Tverskoy Boulevard (Backstage Whispers Through a Film Curtain)

We are peeking. They don't know we are peeking. The light knows — it has already climbed into the frame from the left and is listening with us. Zhenya says something to Nadya, Nadya laughs. Words fly between them like paper airplanes, but no one catches them. On the bench behind sits a person who is also peeking, but at someone else. The camera blinked, and a white spot ate half of Moscow. Only the conversation remained. A conversation that cannot be heard, but can be seen. Seen how two women stand in October and discuss something important. Probably Berlin. Probably tea. Probably the kind of thing you only talk about in Moscow, only in October, only on 2007 film.

Nadine and Jane were quietly whispering about something. Nadine closed her eyes with delight, telling some amusing Berlin or Moscow story, while Jane smiled softly from beneath her black beanie. At that exact moment, the photographer pretended not to be there and hid behind the edge of the frame. The expired Fomapan film instantly joined the game: it cast a misty veil on the left, as if pulling a curtain across a room where two playwrights were busy writing the script for their future lives.

“The Storm Petrel on a Pedestal That Survived More Revolutions Than He Did” (Fomapan 100)

Rose with a crack in his side —
Summer 2021

The writer Gorky lay on the grass for a long time while they constructed a road interchange. He felt the sky was much easier to observe from that angle, but in 2017 they lifted him back up and set him upon a pedestal. Shadr and Mukhina breathed a sigh of relief, while the new tram loop began running around him like an excited dog. The Fomapan film barely degraded here, leaving only a faint veil hovering over the Belorussky station. The writer stares at the people on the bench, realizing that the storm petrel has long flown away, yet the lantern post remains.

"A monument is not frozen bronze, but a witness who also has a biography: it is dismantled, it lies down, it cracks, it is returned. And in this, it is more like a human than like an idea."

Short Info:
The Maxim Gorky Monument at Tverskaya Zastava Square. Designed by Ivan Shadr (1939), completed by Vera Mukhina, and erected in 1951. In 2005 it was dismantled and moved to Muzeon Park, where it first lay horizontally.
In July 2007 the monument was set upright, and after restoration in 2017 it returned to its historical site at Tverskaya Zastava Square.
It is recognized as a federal monument of monumental art.“The Ghost with a Raised Head, Emerging from the Fog of Analog Madness” (Fomapan 100)

Defect made a portrait
Gorky stepped out of the fog
Head in the clouds

This is not a light leak — it’s revelation. The film decided Gorky should become a ghost. He’s no longer a monument but a shadow remembering how to be human. The camera’s flaw turned documentation into a metaphysical self‑portrait of the city, where past and present meet in the white noise of light.

The camera sneezed, and Gorky vanished in a white haze. Only his shadow remained, which proudly raised its head, although shadows don't have heads. The film decided it didn't like reality and drew its own. In this reality, Gorky is not a monument, but a ghost who came to look at us from 1951. The camera broke, but that's exactly why the shot worked. Art is when you wanted to photograph a square, but got a poem about how bronze drowns in milk.

"Sometimes the camera knows more than the photographer: it understands that perfect composition is boring, and creates a masterpiece through defects, turning a document into a vision."

“Steel Pilgrim Seeking the Reflection of Faith” (Fomapan 100)

Steel dissolves in light,
faith reflected in silence,
city forgets speech.

The White City is not a place, but a moment when light decides to remember. The sculpture and the church — two languages
speaking of humanity, yet unable to translate each other. The film, damaged by time, becomes a prophecy: error is the way light recalls itself.

Philosophy: “Perfection is an illusion that vanishes in exposure.”

The camera blinked, and the temple vanished. Only its sigh remained on the paper. Light turned out to be heavier than stone. It pushed through the dome like a finger pressing into pudding. In the developer floated not silver molecules, but forgotten prayers. The building on the right also melted, because glass cannot hold its shape in such heat. We look at the void, but the void looks back at us through glasses made of pure overexposure.

"Sometimes, to see the essence, you must let the light completely destroy the form. Truth always hides in the overexposure — there where details surrender, and only the ghost remains."
“Anatomy of an Overlapping Frame” (Fomapan 100)

Frame ate the next frame.
Legs stay stuck at the top edge.
Ghosts drink heavy fog.

At first, it appeared that nothing had worked out, simply because absolutely nothing worked out. The Canon camera, overwhelmed with enthusiasm, advanced the film by a mere half-centimeter, dispatching the sculpture's legs to the ceiling of the prior image while its head remained behind to ponder inside a white fog. St. Nicholas Church mutated into a silhouette nested within another silhouette. A chunk of someone else’s pavement dangles from above, while absolute void reigns below. This is no defect—it is the triumph of interframe justice, where one picture bites the other right on the heel.

“The frame border is merely a liberal convention; true lomo-punk begins precisely where the emulsion refuses to divide time into previous and subsequent exposures.”

“Ghost of Bohemian Waters upon the Walls of a Subterranean Passage” (Tasma FN 100)

A river needs not be liquid if it chooses to reside inside a subway passage. It may freeze into a flowing drape and hover above the checkered walls, dissolving into the dense, grainy fog of expired silver. Commuters hurry to catch their trains, unaware of Prague's subterranean fairway flowing right above their heads. The film's fog washes away the boundaries between concrete, metal, and current, leaving only the quiet echo of distant water sprays lost deep within Chertanovo.

In the metro passage, the river turns into a woman, and the woman into motion frozen in bronze. The old film, weary of contrast, softens everything — water, air, memory. It feels as if Vltava herself became a cloud to avoid seeing her own forgotten name.

“Two Josephs. The Empty Seat Between Eras” (Fomapan 100)

They sit like two memories that accidentally met on the street. One gestures, the other waits for someone to believe it’s not a performance. Moscow walks by, unaware that history has stepped out for a smoke. And it feels as if the city itself is rehearsing its own parody.

Philosophy: “History loves to repeat itself — especially when it’s paid to.”

On the street formerly known as 25th of October, a sudden historical reduplication occurred. Outside a jewelry shop window, perched upon folding chairs, sat two Generalissimos side-by-side in full military overcoats and caps, each clutching a pipe. Between them rested a lonely plastic stool—presumably reserved for Lenin, who had stepped away again. The Joseph on the left adjusted his cap visor, while the right one—bearing a far striking resemblance to the original portrait—looked straight into the lens as if auditing party discipline. The stringer raised his Zenit-35F and thought: "History repeated itself twice in a single frame, yet expired Fomapan remains entirely unbothered by temporal paradoxes."

“When history becomes a street trade, it naturally multiplies by budding—allowing two iterations of the same past to comfortably share a single sidewalk.”

“Three Tourists as Three Temporary Versions of Light” (Fomapan 100)
Light decided to test itself in human format and produced three temporary versions - one smiling, one thoughtful, and one simply sitting, because even light gets tired sometimes.
The park observed the experiment, pretending nothing unusual was happening. The stringer came too close, and light grew slightly embarrassed - it wasn’t used to its temporary forms being photographed without prior notice.
Still, it stayed: it enjoyed being a tourist, if only for a few seconds.

Three gentlemen of Eastern descent sat on a bench. They had consumed a great deal of tea and swallowed a vast amount of space. Suddenly, a stringer popped up in front of them - as wide as an oak and two meters tall. In his paws was a tiny plastic box that made a soft "chick." One sage was mildly amused, the second stared right through the stringer into eternity, and the third raised his hand in a silent "hello." For back in their distant homeland, two-meter stringers run in packs, and every second one carries expired film.

On Petrovsky Boulevard, reality challenged itself to a duel. The Stringer and Lomografik — two mirrors, two flashes of light. The halo isn’t a lens flaw but proof that the city photographs itself. The stringer stood on the boulevard holding something unknown. This unknown thing was very small, yet it bit fiercely with silver halide film. Suddenly, Lomografik walked up and performed a resounding "click." The stringer also performed a "click," though slightly to the left of his armpit. The sun, exhausted from watching such photographic geometry, curled itself into a glowing bagel and settled directly onto the stringer’s shoulders. The fair buzzed, gingerbread was sold, and two humans temporarily turned into glass elements, refracting 2007 straight into 2017.

Philosophy: Sometimes a person becomes visible only when the mask is tired.

The old Arbat suddenly decided to flow like poorly brewed tea. Everything spun: the streetlamps, the cobblestones, the passersby, all turning into a single gray vortex. The stringer raised his camera on the run, not even taking a moment to glance through the viewfinder, and pressed the shutter. And in this vortex, in its very epicenter, one solitary, motionless moment suddenly froze.

Someone in a bear’s skin, tired of endlessly framing the world through foam-rubber eyes, simply took off his large plush head and placed it on a wooden bench, next to a sign reading "FOR RENT," which was also drifting somewhere in the distance. The world saw a human face—weary, with features of a resident of the vast steppes of Central Asia. The man composedly pulled out a pack of cigarettes, flicked a lighter, and exhaled blue smoke, which instantly mingled with the Lomo-Punk vortex.

It turned out that even the mythical Arbat animals have the most ordinary, human harmful habits. They too grow tired, want to smoke, and remove their beastly masks just to breathe. And the expired Soviet emulsion, as if knowing the truth, captured this moment in coarse brushstrokes of silver grain.

Philosophy: Rest is a form of resistance to time.
Two comrades found wooden gates that led nowhere, placed a bench against them, and decided to fall asleep immediately, so as not to watch stubborn reality drift past. One comrade gently rested his head on the other’s shoulder, while their legs stretched so far forward as if trying to reach the opposite wall of the alley. On the ground at their feet stood a clear plastic vessel holding a liquid that had defeated earthly gravity and plunged them both into absolute rest.
"Listen, my dear brother," the one resting on top whispered soundlessly with closed eyes, "do not make noise with your shutter. We are currently guarding this alleyway from hustle, and if we wake up, we will have to go and comply with the standards of public order, which is extremely tedious in such weather."
And the sun, filtering through the fog of the expired Tasma, shone in a particularly flat way, dividing the house wall into white and gray, as if drawing the boundary between wakefulness and an eternal Arbat dream.

«Sleeping in the street is the ultimate act of either trusting the world or being utterly indifferent to it. When two tired city-dwellers fall asleep on a bench near closed gates, they drop out of the city's economic and social framework. Philosophy: Realism is when metaphysics wears a helmet.

Two people in identical hard hats held a plastic bag, inside of which the yesterday of Moscow city resided. Suddenly, an underhanded stringer ran out from around the corner, pressed a button on a film apparatus with his finger, and stole their reflection along with a chunk of sidewalk tile.
"Listen, my good sirs," one person in a hard hat burst out, pursing her lips toward the lens, "why are we constantly being fixed upon expired bases without our verbal approval? We are, by the way, cleaning the planet of excess atoms here, while you with your glass pieces are increasing entropy!"
The second person said nothing; he simply gripped the bag tighter so that the morning sun wouldn't accidentally tumble out of it. And behind them, upon the facade, the foreign letters "New Balance" pretended they knew how to read Russian, while the active grain of the Tasma turned this street scandal into a document of strict accountability.

«Street photography is always a bit of a guerrilla war for reality. When people in hard hats try to hide their faces from the lens, they intuitively defend their right to remain the invisible force that maintains order. But the expired Soviet emulsion knows no mercy: it catches their grumbling and turns a fleeting flash of street discontent into an eternal monument of lomo-punk».

“Indoor Ether of Old Journalism”

The pipe has grown cold.
In the monocle's soft mist —
The old Zeiss Ikon.

A pipe lies on the table, and inside the pipe, there is darkness. Behind the pipe sits a large German Zeiss Ikon camera, but it doesn't spy on anyone because the Jupiter-8 monocle has conjured up so much fog that all the letters in the manual got mixed up. Smoke was coming out of the pipe, but it turned into pure silver on the ADOX CHS 100 II emulsion. The spirit of old photography walks around the room in woolen socks, coughs, and looks for its newspaper clippings from the last century. Time sat on the edge of the table, wrapped itself in a negative, and decided to wait until the D-76 developer completely dissolves all minor details. There will be no news today; only the Pakon remains, quietly scanning this absolute silence. Total peace and positive inaction.

The Optical Coma of Old Journalism Wide Open

The ash is so sharp.
The vintage camera sleeps
In soap bubble blur.

The citywalker unscrewed the monocle and put a Japanese glass to his eye. The hole opened to the value of "one point four," and space was sliced in half like smoked sausage. Up front, only the pipe remained, spilling its ash. The ash became sharp and concrete, like an invoice from the accounting department. But in the back, the German Zeiss Ikon camera grew indignant and turned into a set of glass flares. It wanted to shoot a serious reportage but completely dissolved in Japanese bokeh. The light ran into the Mamiya Sekor lenses, got lost there, and forgot where it was going. The ADOX CHS 100 II film looked at this outrage, sighed, and developed only what it could reach. The rest was eaten by an optical catastrophe. The Pakon scans the light bubbles and thinks of eternity.

Philosophy: “Every smile is a trap for the hunter.”

A person strikes a playful pose and presses the shutter, and time turns into a dried flower. Seven years flew by, brushing their wings against the cobblestones, and now the young women from the square have gone to feed their children or write annual reports, but their laughter remains pressed between the pages of the expired Fomapan. Our Pentax Spotmatic acted like a herbarium press: it pinned the second against the glass of the Jupiter, dried it in D-76, and left it to be stored in the dark. The hunter thought they were hunting, but they were simply collecting leaves that had fallen from someone else's youth. Time stands nearby, flipping through our album and quietly sneezing from the silver dust.
And I laugh. I laugh because I am old. I shoot the young, who shoot the world, and the world shoots us all.
The Fomapan, awakened after twelve years of sleep, looks on and thinks: “Again, these people with their little boxes. Nothing has changed.”
And maybe that is true.
Nothing has changed — except the cobblestones, worn a little deeper. And me. And her. We all grow older.

Philosophy: “Every farewell is a rehearsal for freedom.”

Yesterday she was solving equations with X. Today, X is her. Unknown, standing on the threshold. The sash across her shoulder says: "Graduate." But the sash doesn't say who she will become. The sash is silent anyway, it's just fabric with letters.
The white apron is a flag of surrender to childhood. The black dress is mourning for the pioneer neckerchief. The bows are two white clouds stuck in her hair.
She is posing. Of course she is posing. Who at sixteen doesn't pose? The world is an Instagram, even when there's no Instagram in the frame. The Pentax camera looks at her from above (or from below, who can tell where up is here?). The film, asleep since 2007, sees this girl and thinks: "I thought I had seen everything. But here — a new generation."
The cobblestones of Red Square remember parades. Today they remember a graduate. Parades pass. Graduates remain. At least, on film.

“A Casual Conversation with the Ghost of 1937“

Manezhnaya Square functioning as a market for cheap historical counterfeits. Here we see a clinical session of global desensitization. A citizen whose cap and mustache are meant to represent Joseph Stalin (despite the resemblance being practically non-existent) lazily negotiates with a visiting tourist. The meta-irony hits like a brick: the most terrifying ghosts of the 20th century have been reduced to street-side cosplayers, entertaining guests from Germany, the USA, or Brazil. Generational trauma? Historical reflection? No, just a quirky guy with a pipe who poses for a small fee.

This is pure, distilled Oberiu theatre: form has utterly consumed tragedy and spat it out as a tacky tourist souvenir. The Samsung Vega and Kodak Vision3 film capture this encounter with merciless, documentary-grade clarity. Capitalism defeated communism in the most sophisticated way possible—by hiring its dictators to work as jesters at the foot of the Kremlin. History repeats itself: first as tragedy, second as a cheap impersonator on the cobblestones.

On Manezhnaya Square operates the Bureau for the Maintenance of Disguised History. Today’s staff list includes a man portraying Stalin, though resemblance is not required: the uniform is the password, authenticity optional.
He consults passersby on matters of the past long out of warranty, issuing certificates of temporary historical validity. The shadow of his uniform lies on the pavement like a stamp: “History serviced. Next.”
The city walks by, unimpressed: there is always room here for those who dress time in a more convenient costume.

He walks behind them, not chasing people but light sliding across their outlines. The girls don’t know their steps are already part of the chronicle, and the hunter — part of their motion. Philosophy: "Every hunt for light ends with the hunter inside the frame."

A chronicle of double surveillance set against the backdrop of late summer, 2017. "Lomografik" lowers his panoramic "periscope," the Nikon KeyMission 360, right to the ground, stealthily capturing a street portrait of two walking girls from a radically low angle. It’s pure photographic espionage wrapped in a street-art aesthetic. But the system encounters a glitch: the hunter himself is targeted by another camera, capturing him from behind.

The Kodak Vision3 motion picture film, developed as black-and-white in D-76, turns this casual walk into a tense piece of photo-journalism. The white lane markings guide the eye toward the blurred domes of the cathedral, while the motion-blurred legs evoke a sense of a chase. This is pure Oberiu absurdity: reality has split into three distinct layers—the girls who are simply walking, "lomografik" who is stealing their perspective from the cobblestones, and the author who is stealing the very act of that theft.

“The Engineering of Total Vision on Red Square”

He stands on Red Square like a hunter who knows that light is the prey. The domes behind him are scenery for a film about eternity, and in his hands — a device that captures the moment from every side. Moscow watches, and he records its watching. The photo‑hunt goes on, but the beast is the frame itself.

Philosophy: "Light behaves better when it knows it’s being watched."

An optical conspiracy in the very heart of the capital. "Lomografik" calibrates his analog-digital interface. Perched atop a metallic monopod is the Nikon KeyMission 360—a tiny black box designed to swallow the surrounding space whole, without leaving a crumb, in all 360 degrees of its existential emptiness. In the background stand the unflappable domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral and the skeleton of a construction crane. The cathedral has seen tsars, revolutions, and parades. Now it sees a man with a stick. The absurdity is perfect.

This is pure Oberiu-esque poetry of the digital age: a man utilizes a flat screen to control a spherical eye, while a Korean Samsung Vega point-and-shoot captures this act of high-tech shamanism on American motion picture film. The texture of Kodak Vision3, developed in D-76, commits a noble act of stylistic violence upon the frame—it strips the modern gadget of its high-tech sheen, transforming this 2017 techno-hunt into a classified archive from a Cold War-era Optical Research Institute.

Philosophy: "The ancient Russian spirit hiding in the silver halides"

The Cathedral of the Kazan Icon stands where Red Square meets Nikolskaya Street. It is small compared to the Historical Museum and the GUM department store, but it does not care. The Svema KN-5D film, born in January 1991, looks at this church and sees... grain. So much grain. The emulsion is tired. It cannot hold the details. The ornate facade dissolves into silver fog. The onion domes float above the modern buildings like memories of a different Russia. People walk past. Some enter. Some pray. The film grain makes the sky look like ancient parchment. This is not a photograph of a church; it is a photograph of the idea of a church, filtered through thirty years of chemical decay. The ancient Russian spirit is still here, hiding in the silver halides, waiting for someone to notice.

The Rogozhskaya Sloboda is a quiet paradise in the middle of a dusty, noisy city. Here, among blooming roses and resident ducks who raise their families every year, stands the Vodosvyatnaya Chapel, the "Jordan". The arches curve over the dark water, holding the weight of history. The Svema film, despite its age, captures the stone with stubborn clarity. It is a physical object. It was built by hands, it holds water, it reflects the sky. The grain is heavy, but the structure is solid. This is history, documented in silver. The Old Believers kept their traditions alive through centuries, and the stone remembers. Once a year, after Easter, a fair comes alive here, and a procession walks through these arches. The chapel is not a museum; it is a living heart of the Old Faith.“The Jordan Dissolving in the Silver Fog” (Svema KN-5D)

The same frame, yet time has departed. The film’s veil turned reality into dream and dream into revelation. It feels as if the air itself became sacred water where all earthly things dissolved.

But then, the chemistry intervenes. The same chapel, the same angle, the same focal length. But the emulsion, tired after thirty years of waiting in the dark, decides to exhale. A silver fog rolls in. The contrast drops. The stone begins to dissolve. This is no longer a photograph of a building; it is a photograph of a memory of a building. The Old Believers preserved their faith in secret, in the mist of persecution. The film, by a chemical accident, recreates that mist. The chapel is no longer on the water; it is floating in the void of the expired emulsion. A ghost of the 18th century, caught in the fog of 1991. The camera did not change. The world changed.

«Sbarro Noir: The Accidental Masterpiece of Frame Zero»

Silence as a form,
dialogue only its trace —
light writes the version.

It was frame zero. The film was merely being pulled, a mechanical ritual to advance the celluloid. The camera sat on the table of an underground Sbarro, a 1963 Zeiss pretending to be a spy. The shutter stayed open. Time stretched. The man and the woman dissolved into a dialogue of shadows, their words becoming indistinguishable from the grain of the expired Svema. And there, in the background, the word "ВЫХОД" (EXIT) glowed with the quiet desperation of a neon saint. They were talking about something important, or perhaps about the weather. The long exposure doesn't judge; it only blurs. We are left with a Lomo-Punk masterpiece born from a test shot: two ghosts sharing a meal, while the exit patiently watches them forget how to leave.

At the Bolshoi Theatre fountain, light becomes the unit of the moment. Two figures examine their digital reflections as if verifying the accuracy of their own presence. The expired Svema A2Sh records not the gesture but the structure of light itself — its attempt to measure being. #filmphotography
“Luminous Metric of the Moment” (Tasma Isopan-Chrome Type 42)

Light splits the second,
two faces check themselves —
the world writes a formula.

The Bolshoi Theatre has stood for centuries, hosting operas about gods, tsars, and tragic lovers. Today, it hosts two girls checking if their hair looked good in the last photo. The fountain throws water into the air—a useless, beautiful gesture, not unlike the act of taking a selfie. They lean over the glowing rectangle, seeking validation from pixels, while the 1963 Zeiss Ikon watches them through a layer of expired Soviet silver. The film doesn't care about their angles. The film only cares about the light. "Well, what pictures have we got?" we ask. The pictures we got are of people asking what pictures they got. A perfect, closed loop of modern existence, frozen in the grain of a dying factory's last breath. The theatre waits. The water falls. The screen scrolls.

«A Relfie for Those Who Refuse to See»

Round glass hides the eyes,
The sun burns through expired grain—
We are half a frame.

We composed a relfie. But since we wore round pieces of dark glass, we saw neither ourselves nor each other. This is the highest form of the genre. Yuri, speaking the ancient dialect of Lomo-Punk, and I, merely holding the 1963 Zeiss, decided to become two dark circles with legs. The sun, either setting, rising, or simply confused by the calendar, agreed to burn a hole in the sky. The Svema film, completely bewildered by this much light, turned the heavens into boiling milk and our faces into shadows of shadows. We are a half-frame. We are the missing half of a thought that nobody started. The moon was full, or the sun was angry. In black and white, the difference is purely philosophical. We looked at the world, the world looked at us, and both parties politely pretended not to notice.

“Spring Captures Itself” (Tasma Isopan‑chrome Type 42)

Spring takes a photo —
water smiles back,
film stays silent.

A photograph within a photograph — a mirror unaware of who it reflects.
The city watches, and film records not faces, but the attempt to remember a moment.
Spring is a frame that captures itself.

Marble and woman — both tired of posing. The focus error turns the meeting into a dream where history and irony share the same stage.

White light holds the form,
centuries mirrored in stone,
silence knows the name.

The cathedral stands as a formula of light — no breath, only memory.
Each edge marks time, each shadow signals presence.
It’s not a look into the past, but the past itself turned into light.

The Cathedral of the Savior of the Holy Image, Spaso‑Andronikov Monastery, Moscow
Founded around 1360 by Saint Alexy the Metropolitan, after his miraculous salvation from a storm on the Black Sea.
The first abbot was Saint Andronik, disciple of Saint Sergius of Radonezh.
The present stone cathedral was built between 1420–1428 under Metropolitan Photius, by architects Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny.
Fragments of Rublev’s frescoes survive inside.
After the monastery’s closure, the building served various secular functions, including an archive in the 1940s.
Restoration began in 1954 under architect L.A. David; the Andrei Rublev Museum of Old Russian Art opened in 1960.
Since 1989, divine services have resumed.

The cathedral does not look — it listens. Through layers of restoration and loss, the presence of Rublev still glimmers, as if the pigment of his icons remains alive beneath the stone.

This roadside kebab joint once stood a few steps from the darkroom “Sreda,” a place where film lovers surrendered their negatives to chemistry, hope, and the occasional miracle.

The kebabs here were famously described as “deliciously wrong,” a phrase that worked less as praise and more as a declaration of artistic intent. The building looked like it had been assembled from leftover decisions, yet it held its ground with the confidence of a structure that knew flavor could outlive architecture.

Both the darkroom and the kebab stand have vanished, leaving behind nothing but a stubborn aftertaste in the city’s memory. In this photograph, the ordinary becomes myth: smoke as narrative, grease as philosophy, and a humble shack as the last honest monument in a neighborhood that has since forgotten how to be imperfect.

"Memory Standing in the Mud or A Toast to the Vanished Home," (Adox Silvermax 100)

Three shadows drink —
a puddle keeps reflection,
the house awaits.

Description:
On the site where Andrei Tarkovsky’s house once stood, street artist Zoom created the installation Funeral Repast on the Tarkovsky’s House.
Three figures from Stalker gather around a bar table, as if discussing the fate of memory, art, and the city itself.
Now both the house and the installation are gone — only this photograph remains, a trace of dialogue between time and oblivion.
Moscow, as in Tarkovsky’s films, becomes the Zone again — where past and present dissolve in mud and reflection.

Gridline trembles —
inside, a myth reflected,
the city awaits pardon.

Description:
Through the fence lies the vacant lot where Tarkovsky’s house once stood.
The three figures from Stalker — no longer an installation, but ghosts waiting for a reconstruction that will never come.
This frame speaks of memory turned into restricted territory, where even time needs a permit to enter.
Moscow, as always, knows how to fence off its dreams — to keep their silence intact.
