I might even go a step further. If a state has less than, say, a million people in it, maybe it should go back to being a territory again.

On that note, do we really need two Dakotas?

Florida doesn’t have the mythos. Florida is beaches and citrus orchards and Disney World and gators and retirement communities and weird Florida Man headlines, not rugged cowboy individualism.

When I was in college there were some new benches installed near the math department, and groundskeeping put signs on the benches saying PLEASE DO NOT PARK BIKES HERE with DO NOT printed in red ink. Except as it turns out the red ink faded to white in the sunlight pretty quickly.

This a very poignant metaphor.

Yeah, as I understand it the UC system was originally intended to be completely tuition-free for Californians. For a while they were charging “student fees” to cover costs, but the “fees” kept getting bigger and bigger, and at some point they just started calling it tuition anyway.

Apparently that got changed to mere house arrest. But importantly, I said “arsonistS,” not “arsonist.” One is not enough.

Even the fictional ultra-right-wing newspaper in Watchmen had a “crank file” of letters-to-the-editor so out-there that they wouldn’t publish them unless they had absolutely nothing else to print. Now-a-days everything in the crank file would just go directly to the comments section for all to see.

If the arsonist’s kid is also an arsonist, yes.

I think the normies need to start realizing that fixing everything needs to start with prosecuting and imprisoning the arsonists.

I take a Victorian-handbill approach to graphic design. Cramming as many fonts and dingbats as possible into your flyer is how you *win*.

I genuinely can’t even begin to answer the question unless you can tell me what “conscious” means.

Huh. I don’t think I had heard of that one.

Granny’s entire character is a master-class in ways to subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) steer the way other people think and act.

I spent a lot of time in college thinking and reading and arguing and writing essays about what a mind is and what it would mean for a machine to have a mind, and that was fun. I was not expecting that 20+ years later all that would become *relevant* and I am not happy about it.

I think the problem is that it’s not really about one specific guy because it’s about so *many* guys.

No, I don’t know what you mean. I have a lot of things. Which one of them is “conscious”?

When you say “conscious,” what do you mean? Without any definition it may as well be a nonsense word.

If you don’t know what it is, and you don’t know how to measure it, why base an entire system of ethics around it?

How can you tell if something is conscious or not?
110
Abacus Wizard @abacuswizard.bsky.social · 16h
Then why would you use that to determine whether someone deserves rights?

I saw it in Philosophy of Mind class in college and wrote an essay about it. In the last few months I’ve been watching TNG in order from the beginning (for the first time) and spent the whole first season-anna-half looking forward to this one. It’s magnificent.

As soon as I saw the image I immediately started looking for “…by Chuck Tingle”; it just seems like his sort of cover art layout.

To me, the final duel in THE MARK OF ZORRO (1940 version) is still the greatest swordfight in the history of cinema—not only for the swordplay itself, but also for how it fits into the overall plot.

Based solely on the trailers I’ve seen, it looks like they’ve hit exactly the right blend of taking the source material seriously and also not taking themselves too seriously. So yeah, I think they understood the assignment, so to speak.

I’ve heard that the model train chase sequence was the first part of The Wrong Trousers they planned out—everything else in the film was designed to build up to that scene.

I always thought it tremendously unjust that kindergarteners have to take naps when they don’t want to, while grown-ups really want to take naps but don’t have time.

“i still can’t get my head around it but i’m not upset anymore” Dang, if we could just get everyone to adopt this mindset, we could wrap things up and have utopia by next week.

In America you can never truly be lost—if you’re out in the wilderness and can’t find your way, just whisper the word “free” and a libertarian will jump out from behind a tree and say “ACKSHUALLY it’s not FREE, it’s paid for by TAXPAYERS” and then you can ask him for directions to the nearest town.
