9. PROMISE ME SUNSHINE read this for a romance book club at my local library. it’s weird because i do consider myself a romance enjoyer but i failed to resonate with this one. it has some good ideas for character work but puts those aside for feel good cuteness and that undermines it.

7. THE DEATH OF VIVEK OJI whereas little rot is decadent in its interwoven plot, the restraint of this book, it's meat-stripped frankness, makes the impact of the titular death and the surrounding grief all that more visceral. a story about children as item and family as social obligation.

6. THE SECRET HISTORY the neuroses of the bourgeois and petit bourgeois condense into one of the best thrillers i've ever read. decadent prose that's full of life. interesting people are rarely ever good. what will you do to be interesting? to feel like you matter? you will succumb to the glamour.
