This is amazing! That play through with listening is soooo good. 😲 I have tons of chord sheets in ODT files. I’ll have to find a way to get them imported. I spent waaay too long getting chords lined up over words… 😅

Woah, these are super cool. And “The Pot-Off”? Very fun haha. I’m glad you’ve found something that helps you. Music is my non-tech hobby, though it’s unfortunate it uses the same muscles (ish) as typing.

Agents and I been cranking on a new personal finance app to replace my current Google Form to Google Sheets driven expense tracking system. You could say I’ve graduated from being one of these “spreadsheet people”. Shew, just in time to not catch some strays.

Another day, another batch of Composer and NPM security vulnerability advisories. With all the recent supply chain attacks, I’ve been kinda nervous to run composer/npm update. No likely this feeling.

Your kid isn’t a “problem child”. Kids are just people who need more practice at handling life’s many situations. And they just need someone to show them how to handle life well. And show patience and understanding when they don’t do it well.

Catching up on the @syntax.fm MadCSS competition. I started watching it in the can... but I’m not going with that picture. Many are saying this is rigged for the Syntax boys… concerning. 😅

The AI loves to make things more complicated with or without React. I’m sure useEffect is partly responsible, but it’s also just our collective coding practices being regurgitated back to us.

I’d totally wear it if it’s comfortable and doesn’t fit too tight. A homemade pattern just makes it cooler. My sister-in-law made a beanie last Christmas and I worn it almost every day for 3 months until it got warm.

+1 to whoever mentioned enzymatic urine cleaner. It’s really good. Currently sitting on a couch cushion (it’s my spot!) that is slightly damp from cleaning up where my 2 year old potty training little man stood and soaked it really good. The whole gd house smells just slightly of pee these days…

If you are in the Lexington, KY area Oct 9th, come on out for a meetup at 7 pm! I’ll be talking about how I’ve been using DTOs in a PHP/Laravel context. Stay for a beer and hang afterwards!

8 weeks for paternity leave. I didn’t sleep, fed and changed a baby, and helped keep the other 3 little humans alive. It’s exactly what I expected. Didn’t so much as answer an email or write a single line of code. Came back exhausted and not very refreshed lol.

@calebporzio.bsky.social I’ve got to say (dad of 4 here, 6m to 5y), your description of multiple hours with just one kid (!) working outside sounds like heaven. An unrealistic fantasy as this point in my life, but sounds really nice. Anyway, back to the joy/mostly agony.

And DTO fields can be typed as whole other DTOs (composable, reusable). All DTOs extend a base class and all attributes extend a base attribute class with "hooks" (functions) for different functionality. Another benefit is being able to generate fake API responses for testing from the DTO itself.

Aaron Eisenberg @aaroneisenberg.me · 26/02/2025
Sure! My (slightly nasty 🫣) DTOs use reflection heavily to introspect the type of a field to generate a list of validation rules. I use custom attributes on the DTO properties to make it more fine grained (ex. date format). gist.github.com/PikaJew002/d... (FilesProperties.php is the actual DTO)

I found an interesting use case for using them with DTO properties to provide validation for third party API responses.

@mattstauffer.com at one time setup the Torch repo which gave some examples of how it could be used outside of the framework (github.com/mattstauffer...). But it’s only up to date with Laravel 8.x. And not really set up to work as a standalone package. I still found it helpful though.

Just came back from 7 weeks of paternal leave 2 weeks ago . Don’t think you forget how to code… you just forget all of the context for every single project you were working on before. Takes a few weeks to get it all back in your head. Good luck!

Happy new year!
The final Calvin and Hobbes strip: a Sunday strip with a classic sledding theme.

Calvin: wow, it really snowed last night! Isn't it wonderful?
Hobbes: everything familiar has disappeared! The world looks brand-new!
Calvin: a new year...a fresh clean start!
Hobbes: it's like a big white sheet of paper to color on!
Calvin: a day full of possibilities! It's a magical world, Hobbes, ol' buddy... Let's go exploring!

They sled off into the white blank distance.
