I my dad, a letter carrier, taught be the cross streets of our square-grid town, which would serve as the jumping off point for any directions, but I created a symbolic shorthand that I could quickly jot down when people gave details over the phone.

Turn right after the stoplight. Drive blocks and then turn left. After the railroad tracks, my house is 123 Main Street.

Been on a journey trying to figure out what my duty was to my family and how to meet it, most recently via stoic principles. This resonates.

…society cannot function if we do not guard and love all its members, as all the limbs are necessary to the body. From this arises the obligation to soothe and help teach others to deal with their anger. There is moral obligation to attend to, engage and properly negotiate with one’s own emotions, but also to help others to do the same. The virtuous life, then, requires communal engagement and connection.

I have a handful of official prints from my step-great grandfather. They were stuffed in a cigar box with some other spoils. I haven't found the same images online. Someday, I'd like to figure out how he got them all.
