If you’ve ever worked in a hospital, you’ve probably met someone who was indispensable right up until the moment they weren’t. NO-WIN is a novel about usefulness, exhaustion, bureaucracy, and the people who somehow keep showing up anyway. Introduction and chapter guide 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

“Somewhere beneath all the bureaucracy and fluorescent despair and administrative appetite there still remained the faint embarrassing possibility that human beings might survive one another after all.” NO-WIN begins June 7.

NO-WIN is a novel set in the hospitals, highways, small towns, and lakeshores of Michigan during the 1970s. It’s also about a family trip to Michilimackinac that involves rain, mechanical uncertainty, financial anxiety, and several moments of genuine happiness. Link in comments

I’ve started serializing NO-WIN—a novel about emergency departments, institutional absurdity, family life, usefulness, exhaustion, and the strange forms of humanity that survive beneath administrative systems. New chapters every Sunday at 7pm, starting June 7.

A man hands me a stamped paper confirming I’m a piece of shit. I sign a denial. We both feel better about the system.

“The son has awakened from a dream; his father goes into his room to comfort him. There was a man with a camera, the son says. It is still very early, his father tells him. Go back to sleep. He looked like you, the son says. No, the son says; he didn’t look like you, but I knew he was you. “

This piece looks at how quickly a person can be reinterpreted inside a system built on control and how those shifts don’t easily reverse. Open for submissions. I’m interested in short, controlled but unstable work. In the meantime, I’ve been posting my own material as things get off the ground.
