These will hopefully also be running in Chicago by the end of next year. Can't believe Metra is finally getting proper 21st century non-gallery car rolling stock.

You don't want people to bring a beverage to an interview because of your outdated notions of manners. I wouldn't bring a beverage because I don't want to have to pee halfway through. We are not the same.

It would be one thing if this AI revolution enabled people to spend less time working and more time on leisure, or a universal basic income. But no. They want to replace all the jobs with robots AND we'll somehow still be expected to work 40+ hours a week to survive.

I am once again going on the record as a Forest Park homeowner to say: an O'Hare express train stop here would make our community a more desirable place to live. Screw the NIMBYs.

The core Elizabeth Line stations in London are cool. As I was waiting for the train, I overheard a man next to me say "This feels like I'm in Star Wars." The curvy white walls do seem like something out of sci-fi. Makes me think we should build our own tunnel in Chicago...

The tradeoffs of living in an apartment with all west-facing windows: The direct sunlight makes it too warm in the evening even when it's not hot outside. But it's easy to limit my heater usage during winter.

This guy on the Green Line is watching Tik Tok with his phone at max volume and half the videos are "fun fact" bullshit narrated by AI voiceovers. Maybe technology was a mistake.

"There is absolutely no smoking on the train. That includes cigarettes, cigars, vapes, and magical plants." Amtrak conductors are always a hoot.

Never ceases to amaze me when people buy property next to a rail line and then complain about train noise. Granted, this particular line sees no traffic today. But you can't assume the track will be abandoned forever.

As a resident of the "West 1" zone, expanding bikeshare into areas served by CTA rail seems like common sense. The number of times I have seen Divvy bikes in Forest Park is a sign that people around here want to use them.

If we did this in the US, they would park long freight trains on top of the solar panels during peak daylight hours.

I support a route like this, but selfishly only if it gets an intermediate stop in Forest Park.

The way people complain about toll roads, I expected them to cost like $5 per toll plaza... what do you mean it's actually less than bus fare??

This kind of smart, walkable, mixed-used urbanism is illegal to build in most American cities.

I was once at an Elizabeth Line station in London and a man asked me if this was the train to Heathrow Airport. Even in another country, I can give good transit directions.

People don't like to be told that they are more likely to die in a car crash in their safe suburban neighborhood than get mugged in the big scary city.

We built the highways as "shortcuts" parallel to existing surface streets (the Stevenson for Archer, the Kennedy for Elston). And look how well that's turning out.

My work just force-installed an AI assistant Chrome extension without warning. The permissions given to this thing seem a bit concerning to me considering it cannot be turned off without admin privileges...

See also: St. Patrick's when people are walking in the street, but we somehow still allow cars to drive downtown (especially on Upper Wacker). And every Metra train gets delayed or runs as a surprise express due to overcrowding.

It's a shame that Microsoft is a shitty company that I don't want to give any more money to, especially in the wake of the recent Xbox layoffs, because the Halo remake actually looks pretty cool.

Nobody disputes that having access to a car in a car-dominated society is good. It gives one access to jobs, healthcare, food, education, social opportunities and more. All we're asking is for people to go one step deeper and ask why access to such basic rights requires buying and operating a car.

All this talk of daylight saving time got me thinking: I'm not strictly a morning person or night owl, but a secret third thing where I hate afternoons. I like being productive in the morning, or staying up late playing video games. But 12-4pm can be a slump where I don't want to focus on anything.

Keeping the transit theme: I was born for London because these colors made me think of the Victoria, Metropolitan, Lioness, and Hammersmith & City Lines.

Spotted this on Reddit and it seemed interesting to share here: What if the CTA adopted single- or two-letter codes for each line to improve accessibility for colorblindness (similar to WMATA)?

Ominous mesage from ComEd.
Screenshot of an email, text reads:

"Dear Customer,

We are reaching out with an urgent request. Prolonged extreme heat has significantly impacted electrical equipment in your area, and demand on the local grid is at a critical level. Without immediate customer action to reduce energy usage, outages in your community are possible in the hours ahead.

ComEd crews, engineers and system operators are working around the clock — repairing impacted equipment, deploying additional resources and activating every tool available to protect service in your neighborhood."

I know they used to do this pre-pandemic, but does the Blue Line really have low enough ridership on weekends to justify 4-car trains? I feel like they could get crowded during the middle of the day.

If you're going to move to the suburbs, find a town that puts Juneteenth and rainbow banners on their main street which is served by a bus every 15 minutes.
