This is one of those papers that ruins social interactions for a bit because you can’t unsee it and now you might overthink them… including this repost. If I repost @aliciamchen.bsky.social and @rebeccasaxe.bsky.social’s paper, does that create an expectation that they’ll repost my next paper?

Do non-human primates have theory of mind? My new paper takes a new computational approach to this classic question. We implemented verbal theories of primates' mental representations as computational models. These models completed classic visual perspective-taking tasks.

I don't have enough space here for Study 3 ᴖ̈ But see the paper for all the important details as well as Study 3: people think agents in a role are replaceable in a way that doesn't work outside a role, also detectable at reading speed! Also there are some cool recall effects to check out 👀

"You are at a doctor’s office in the waiting room... There is a doctor and another patient drinking coffee with you. The patient looks at you and says, 'Drinking this coffee is probably making the ulcer in your stomach even worse.'" Swap "patient" -> "doctor" at the end.. nicer!

"You are at the auto shop and you finish filling out paperwork with another customer and the mechanic. You put your car keys and your cell phone on the counter. The mechanic looks down at the counter, takes your cell phone and says ‘Thank you.’" Swap "cell phone" -> "car keys" at the end.. nicer!

Excited to share the first empirical article of my PhD work! We found that roles generated social expectations that were detectable WHILE participants were still reading about them. Evidence for roles as an important part of our rapid social cognition. See if you can experience the effects below!
