Not so sure about this take. Big chains undermine mom and pops. Retail vacancy is worse in places where wealthy chains have the run of the place. Have you been on the promenade in SM lately? The West Village? Chains ran up the rents and now the landlords write off empty stores

When are they doing my nearby Safeway in the Castro? It’s literally feet away from so many Muni stops

Well, it eases lateral forces when entering leaving the tangent at speed?

Prefab components, like structural frames and panels are sometimes safer because there is less need for precision and it still speeds up construction time a bit. I would put most mass timber structures in this category. Most MEP and finish work is done on site

Randolph Ruiz @aaaarchitecture.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
So, you have to spend more on materials and on construction quality for these components, but you are hopefully making it up in financing costs because you are getting from site mobilization to a certificate of occupancy faster - but only if everything works out, and sometimes it does not

FWIW, you either do modules, which are constrained by highway clearances and must be over-engineered to support themselves and to be "picked" independently or you have panels, which have to be built to mate together on site and be engineered to be picked. In both cases, some overbuilding is required

Metrolink released a study finding hydrogen trains would reduce capacity and travel times at a large cost - but are still considering a pilot anyway. Take action and tell Metrolink to study electrification, not pilot hydrogen THIS Friday! #Electrify Metrolink actionnetwork.org/letters/tell...

Grade Fire from Amtrak. Shortly after, everyone’s phone lit up with evacuation orders

Randolph Ruiz @aaaarchitecture.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Huh, they provided such an amazing service to all of us. Their absence has left a big hole in my knowledge of Metro's affairs. I am obvi ignorant to the details, but it is a shame they weren't paid to keep going by someone like @streetsblogla.bsky.social

I assumed they worked in the transit-industrial complex, and that their informational project came into conflict with their career over the Sepulveda kerfuffle, which I still suspect was a real thing

An Amtrak passenger train is seen headed toward the viewer through a long lense. It is a hazy day. There are freight cars on the left and a train signal on the right

Can’t really blame SF for not wanting that. They were claiming it was inspired by the architecture of the 1915 International Exhibition, but it’s just an ugly parody.

Hate watching is a strange and terrible thing. Looks like it’s working for Lucid Stew’s shorts. I kinda do it myself with some of the awful Subway Builder vids (why are you tunneling in the valley!)

Everyone supportive of transit in California should watch this. I have a lot of respect for the expertise Nick has developed on transit project delivery. He is a great communicator and believes better things are possible. I hope his work makes an impact.

I’m sorry, what? While I personally think there is much to learn (good and mostly bad) from Voisin, I’ve NEVER in my nearly 40 years in the field encountered an advocate. Modernist planning was more than discredited decades ago to such an extreme degree that we’ve discarded any of its good ideas

Panhandle used to have an extra curvy “park road” through the middle. I prefer to ride on the path in the park, out of the street. I’m still not sure I understand why they built the newer bike lane in the street

Unless the transit service out-competes the auto option on time or convenience, and in the US, it almost never does because auto transportation is the “natural” way to get around…
0140
Randolph Ruiz @aaaarchitecture.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Because most well-off Americans, even in liberal cities, believe that auto transportation is the “natural” way to get around and see transit as an either virtuous sacrifice or an option of last resort for the less fortunate. New York may be the only place in the US where this is not true

I'm all for building new lines, but a bold plan needs to address the problems of the existing lines (slow, mixed traffic, traffic lights) and address the branching problem with the Market subway (which this does by deleting the J?)

I read somewhere recently that CAHSR’s eminent domain powers are weaker than those of Caltrans. Sounds like there may be room for improvement, but funding for the project is clearly the main thing

There are plenty of places with infrastructure and workers that would be better for a new shipyard. How about rebuilding an old shipyard?

Coincidentally they were both designed by Jarvis Hunt. I don’t think the KC template would work. It’s a much smaller building and it’s not easily accessed from the rest of the city. I’d love to be proven wrong

Yes, these trestles were originally part of a wye SP used to access the Bay Bridge. Later Oakland Terminal used at least one of them. One of the legs of the wye burned in a similar fire years ago. Key Route trains went under the SP in an underpass.
