Flood response opens doors to share Christ in Thailand
As Thailand faces more flooding, A3 calls for prayer and support Thailand (MNN) — More than 3.5 million people have been affected by above-average seasonal flooding in Thailand. Authorities warn of more rain in the days to come as communities scramble to prepare for the next deluge. A3 held annual meetings in Bangkok at peak inundation. More about that here. CEO Joe Handley says the latest disaster presents yet another opportunity to make Christ known in Thailand. “In the midst of these kinds of seasons, that’s the ideal time to be a witness,” Handley says. “Oftentimes, people will say, ‘Why do you reach out to us? Why are you helping us?’ and that gives the opportunity to share the hope and truth of Christ.” Recent National Director Gathering (Photo courtesy of A3A3 considers expansion A3 brings church leaders together in cohorts to equip and support them around the world. More about that here. With networks established throughout Asia, Thailand is the one place where A3 doesn’t have a foothold… yet. “We literally, within the last few months, have been talking about opening Thailand,” Handley says. “A lot of our alumni from predominantly China are already here, holding church and doing pretty significant ministry.” The uncertainty caused by flooding could create opportunities for Christians to offer practical help and share their faith. “This is a nation that, by and large, is unreached. It’s a Buddhist nation, an agnostic nation, and the percentage of believers here is very small,” Handley says. “For A3, it’s an opportunity for the Gospel on multiple fronts.” Prayer needed A3 directors hoped to meet with a local Christian leader at the end of September to discuss “next steps” for beginning ministry in Thailand. Flooding prevented the meeting, but A3 is putting a new date on the books. Pray for open doors. “The opportunity to open A3 in Thailand is very prominent, very important for the sake of the Gospel,” Handley says. “Let’s pray that these floodings will be an opportunity for the Church to come alongside the Thai people and the Chinese people and then set a tone for the hope of Christ.” Pray that, as A3 explores ministry in Thailand, the global Church will support believers’ efforts. “It’s a chance for the A3 community to rally around them, similar to what happened in Nepal. When these kinds of things happen, the A3 community and our supporters rally to help the people in need,” Handley says. As Bangkok floodwaters recede, Thailand’s Church has a new opportunity to serve
An update on flooding in Bangkok, where an important A3 global leadership meeting took place Thailand (MNN) — Thailand’s government has approved the equivalent of $122 million in emergency funds to help flood victims nationwide. More than 2.6 million of its people have been affected by recent heavy rains, and at least 23 have died.  Last week, nearly a month’s worth of rain fell on the capital, Bangkok, in just three days.  The flooding threatened an important A3 global leadership meeting happening there this week. A3’s Joe Handley said from Bangkok on Thursday, “Obviously, there’s a massive problem going on physically here in Thailand, but over and above that is a spiritual dimension.”  God is of course doing countless things among believers in Thailand. But at A3 specifically, He is growing their ministry’s global reach. That’s why meeting face-to-face is so important to help its leaders build strong relationships cross-culturally. Handley called this week’s gathering a “strategic” moment for their future.  Praise God that most of the A3 leaders we prayed for earlier this week made it to the gathering despite travel disruptions caused by flooding. Only one Thai national leader that A3 hoped to connect with was unable to attend. Convenience store shelves after Bangkok flooding, September 2026 (Photo courtesy of A3)Other answered prayers came too. Despite supply chain problems caused by flooding, A3’s logistics team was able to arrange for meals for the attendees and other needs. Even so, Handley’s colleagues saw the effects at a local convenience store where “there was virtually just Twinkies and Ding Dongs on the shelves and no other real food,” says Handley.  One leader from neighboring Nepal traveled to this meeting. He shared that in the aftermath of the August 26, 2026 landslide that devastated many communities in Nepal, the government of Nepal has recognized the local Church’s relief work.   “They actually thanked them. They came alongside and said, ‘We recognize what you’re doing. You’re making a difference here, and we are grateful,’” Handley shares. “In the Nepal situation, the Christian Church is working together in unity in an unprecedented way, and the government is working synergistically to reach out to these areas that have been so impacted.”Handley says Nepal’s story is a snapshot of the beauty that could happen with Thai believers, as they serve in the midst of this new disaster. Although floodwaters are receding, thousands of people remain in temporary shelters. Bangkok flooding September 2026 (Photo courtesy of A3)Other answered prayers came too. Despite supply chain problems caused by flooding, A3’s logistics team was able to arrange for meals for the attendees and other needs. “Please pray for the Thai Church as they rally to meet those in need and display and share the truth and hope of Jesus Christ,” says Handley. Pray also for those who attended the A3 meeting to be able to get back home. If continued rain forecasts prove true, it could make flooding issues resurge all over again. Finally, be encouraged! Your prayers make a difference. “Without you, we would not be able to do what we do, and your prayers are what combat the spiritual warfare aspects of this, as well as the hope and healing of Christ in the midst of the crisis,” says Handley.    Listen to the broadcast (top story) Direct Link: https://a3leaders.org/images/audio/mnn/4-5min-Oct02-2026.mp3 Call to Action * Be encouraged! Your prayers make a difference. * Praise God that almost all of A3's intended leaders were able to attend the Bangkok gathering. Praise God for logistics that worked out. * Pray also for those who attended the A3 gathering from around the world to be able to return home. Pray for Thailand's rain to stop so the earth can dry out. * Please pray for God's grace on the Thai Church as they rally to meet people in need with the truth and hope of Jesus Christ. *This article has been corrected from its broadcast to say that most not all of the leaders who planned to attend made it to A3’s Bangkok gathering. The Hidden Branches: A Reflection on Pruning
BY DR. JASON RICHARD TAN, A3/PHILIPPINES  While defoliating my red Ficus microcarpa, I noticed how easily a tree can hide its own flaws. Beneath a lush, vibrant canopy of leaves, structural and health issues such as crossed branches, disease, and unwanted new growth were completely hidden from view. It was only after stripping away the foliage that the tree's well-being could be assessed. In bonsai, as in life, regular pruning isn't just about shaping the exterior; it is about uncovering the truth of what lies beneath. It is not far-fetched to think that the things we do for Jesus may well be the very excuses we create to hide or deflect attention to deeper issues in our hearts. "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful." John 15:1–2 (NIV) We get so caught up in the "busyness" of ministry, church involvement, and outward acts of service that we mistake a full calendar for a healthy soul. Just like a dense canopy of foliage, these good activities can easily hide our real structural issues—unhealthy habits, unresolved bitterness, pride, or misaligned priorities. We assume that because the outside looks green and productive, everything underneath must be fine. By intentionally slowing down and allowing a regular "pruning" of activities, we open ourselves to a sense of vulnerability, a reality check. We permit the Master Gardener to look past our busy exterior and address the hidden issues and entanglements of our hearts. Choosing to be in the presence of the Lord regularly allows Him to make corrections early, before a misplaced branch becomes too thick to bend, or a structural issue compromises our entire faith journey. Early correction prevents deep and serious damage and ensures that future growth is both glorifying to Him and fruitful. Key Takeaways * Activities can mask deep issues. Just as lush leaves hide crossed branches, service and busyness can camouflage a heart in need of healing or correction. Protect your solitude and regularly submit to the Spirit for spiritual pruning. * Appearances deceive. A life that looks outwardly full, active, and healthy may still need careful attention beneath the surface. * Catch it early. It's far easier for the Gardener to shape a young, flexible twig than to saw off a heavy, misplaced branch later. * Pruning promotes well-being and fruitfulness. Cutting back busyness can feel drastic, but it aims at long-term spiritual strength and authentic beauty.   Dr. Jason Richard Tan A3/Philippines ABOUT THE AUTHOR --- Dr. JASON RICHARD TAN is a missiologist and A3/Philippines alumnus with extensive experience in theological education, pastoral ministry, and missionary training. Overactive rainy season presents Gospel opportunity Thailand (MNN) — Floodwaters are beginning to recede in parts of Bangkok as officials intensify drainage operations. Weekend rains inundated the city, forcing thousands into evacuation centers and leaving travelers stranded for hours. Commuters and local residents navigating through flooded walkways near the Lak Si transport hub in Bangkok on September 27, 2026. (Zawzawaungthwin, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons)“We went through probably at least three miles of flooded road, and cars stopped all along the way,” A3’s Joe Handley says, speaking to MNN from a hotel in Bangkok. “My one colleague from Japan waded across the street to get dinner tonight; he was up to his knees in water.” Flooding strains food access September is the peak of Thailand’s rainy season, but many Bangkok residents say this year’s flooding seems worse than previous episodes. Authorities declared a city-wide disaster on Saturday after nearly 48 hours of heavy rain in Bangkok. “It’s monsoon season, and usually Bangkok is really well equipped for rains, but in this case, the rains were so much that it overflooded the city,” Handley says. The deluge left entire neighborhoods swamped, trapping at least 80,000 people inside their homes. “I have colleagues who live here, and they tried to wade through the water just to get food to survive for the last few days. And when they got to the market, virtually all the shelves were empty,” Handley says. “Travelers may also struggle to find meals, including those attending A3’s leaders’ meeting in Bangkok this week.” “We’re not even sure if the hotel itself will be able to get food in a timely manner to feed the group [or if] we can get everyone across the street or to the different malls to have meals that are not on site,” Handley says. 3 ways to pray Pray that A3 leaders and associates will arrive safely in Bangkok for the annual meeting. “All of our national directors from 22 countries, plus a few extras, are going to be coming in the next few days,” Handley says. “We’ve got people coming from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, and all of them are worried about whether or not they’re going to be able to make it here.” Pray the meeting can take place as planned, giving A3 leaders the tools they need to succeed. “We’ll be spending – Lord willing, with the rains and the floods – Tuesday through Friday together, focused on collaboration. We’ve invited in a group called Vision Synergy to lead us on daily equipping skills to prepare our national directors and working teams to do deeper dives with collaboration,” Handley says. Pray that a local leader can travel safely to meet Handley and discuss launching A3’s work in Thailand. “Even this week, we had planned to have a meeting with a Thai national leader to talk about launching our work here,” Handley says. “Please pray that the fellow can make it here with all the chaos that’s going on in the city, so we can meet with him.”   Listen to the broadcast (top story) Direct Link: https://a3leaders.org/images/audio/mnn/4-5min-Sep29-2026.mp3 Call to Action * Pray that A3 leaders and associates will arrive safely in Bangkok for the annual meeting. * Pray the meeting can take place as planned, giving A3 leaders the tools they need to succeed. * Pray that a local leader can travel safely to meet Handley and discuss launching A3’s work in Thailand. A Global Movement of Esthers
Inner Healing and Transformation in Indonesia By LORI SNUGGS Women in Ministry (WIM), A3 At A3, our mission is to identify, equip, and release leaders to build up the Kingdom of God across the globe. Through our Women in Ministry (WIM) network, this vision takes a powerful, targeted shape: creating a Global Movement of Esthers. We intentionally invest in women leaders so they can discern their God-given callings, lead with biblical conviction, and design local solutions to the challenges facing their communities. Because leadership can often feel isolating, WIM provides a vibrant, trusted learning community where women can grow together. A foundational pillar of this journey is Spiritual Formation. We believe that to sustainably pour out into others, a leader’s own heart must first be tended to, pruned, and filled by the Holy Spirit. Women in ministry are frequently the first responders to the pain and brokenness in their congregations, but who ministers to the minister? Recently, a WIM cohort session held in Indonesia focused on the vital theme of inner healing. When women leaders are given a safe space to confront personal wounds, process accumulated stress, and encounter the secure love of the Heavenly Father, the trajectory of their leadership changes. They are freed from the baggage of the past and empowered to lead from a place of health and wholeness. Below are two beautiful, unedited testimonies from this session, capturing the raw and profound ways God is moving to restore, strengthen, and equip His daughters in Indonesia. Dosni's Testimony Hello, my name is Dosni. I would like to share how the WIM (Women in Ministry/Movement) sessions have deeply blessed my life, especially through Module 3 on inner healing. Since the age of 12, I experienced a deep sense of rejection because my parents allowed me to live with relatives which is far away from my hometown. Almost every night, my pillow was wet with tears as I cried over the circumstances of my life back then. My family background was also far from easy—my father was a drunkard and a gambler, which meant he did not fulfill his role effectively in providing for our family's needs. To cut a long story short, I grew into a teenager who appeared tough on the outside, but carried deep-seated bitterness toward my father. During the prayer session for parental blessing and forgiveness—where Mr. Juserdi represented the father figure and Mrs. Lori represented the mother figure—I felt as though I was being embraced and strengthened directly by my own father in the spirit. My heart, which for so long had been filled with judgment and disappointment toward my parents, slowly began to soften. I learned to accept them just as they are. Renewing the Mind and Building Resiliency was another part of the program that blessed me immensely that Carol taught. In the past, relatives and people around me often spoke negative words into my life, saying things like, "Dosni, why is it that everything you touch breaks?" or "You can't do it, you are hopeless."  Without realizing it, I began to believe those lies and even started repeating them to myself. Through the tools shared by Carol, I learned to overturn every lie I had believed about myself and replace it with the truth of God's Word. I learned to speak acceptance statements based on my identity in Christ—that I am loved, accepted, valuable, and created by God with a beautiful purpose. Today, I can see myself more clearly—as a person who is simple, yet deeply precious. WIM has also equipped me in my ministry and my profession as a high school teacher. Currently, I am facing several teenagers who remind me of my past self, with all their various misbehaviors and struggles. Through WIM, I have learned to look deeper into the root causes of my students' behavior. I now realize that what is visible on the surface is often just a small fraction of the trauma, inner wounds, and bitterness accumulated over the years that shape a person's character. Therefore, I now choose to approach struggling students with love, empathy, and a counseling mindset, rather than simply focusing on their misbehavior or handing out punishments. I believe that the Lord Jesus is able to restore every broken heart, just as He has restored my life. Through WIM, I have not only been personally healed, but I have also been equipped to become a channel of healing for others. Rere's Testimony At the end of Session I on Heavenly Father’s Secure Love, Mr. Juserdi prayed as a father and Lori as a mother to their daughter. At that moment, every word spoken touched my heart deeply. It was as if my own father—who passed away in August 2019—were speaking directly to me. My father had never prayed a blessing like that over me before. Hearing the blessing spoken by Mr. Juserdi and Lori made me cry a lot. I affirmed every prayer spoken by Mr. Juserdi and Lori. Those prayers greatly strengthened me and deepened my faith that God longs to restore me. Then, in Session II and Session III, we covered Releasing Prayer and stress-release techniques. This was something new for me. I realized that it is essential to practice these every day. Because negative thoughts can easily arise in our minds, we need to release those negative things, confessing them before God, and listen to what God is personally speaking to us. Every night I try to practice these techniques while speaking God’s Word. As Carol said, if our stress level is at a 4 that day, it can drop to zero by doing the stress-release techniques (repeating the words). I also practice these techniques with my 5-year-old daughter—she turned 6 a few days ago. While we were doing stress-release techniques she gradually got sleepy and fell asleep. It was cute to see her repeating words of blessing and all that is good and true. In the final session before we left, Lori also led us in prayer; there, I felt led to pray for women whose hearts are wounded, unappreciated, and in need of God’s love. I told God, “Use me, Lord, to meet the women who need healing, who need God’s love, because God is the only one who can heal every broken and wounded heart.” Amen.  Leading from the Overflow These stories beautifully illustrate what happens when we reduce leadership isolation and invest in the spiritual depth of Women In Ministry. When a leader experiences the healing touch of God, her ministry shifts from a place of heavy, weary obligation to a place of rich, vibrant overflow. As Dosni and Rere return to their respective classrooms, churches, and families across Indonesia, they do not just carry new theoretical leadership frameworks. They carry a restored sense of identity, practical tools for building personal resiliency, and a burning passion to see other wounded hearts made whole. Dosni is looking past the surface behaviors of her high school students to minister to their deeper traumas, while Rere is already passing these stress-release and blessing techniques down to the next generation through her young daughter. This is the ultimate goal of A3’s Women In Ministry network: accelerating the Gospel by changing the lives of the women who lead. When you equip a woman leader, you transform a community. Join Us in Raising and Empowering Women Leaders The work of equipping a Global Movement of Esthers relies on the vital support and intercession of our global community. We invite you to join us in lifting up these incredible Indonesian leaders as they step forward with courage, clarity, and integrity to transform their culture for the glory of God. Praise Report on A3 Nepal Relief Efforts!
Thank you for supporting Nepal! Thank you to each person who has so generously given to the A3 Nepal Relief efforts! Because of you, we are thanking God for his generous provision as we bring help to the people of Nepal. With your help we are: * Working through 13 churches in the affected area to bring practical aid in Jesus’ name * Building new homes for 27 families who were helicoptered out of the flood zone * Building two new churches that were destroyed in the flooding * Providing food, water, blankets, and temporary shelter to those who have lost everything Together with the practical aid, your gift is also bringing hope. Hope that God sees them and is providing for them. Hope that they have a future. Several of you joined us online this week to cry out to God on behalf of the people of Nepal. We are trusting God to answer those prayers for aid, comfort, and the growth of his church. If you missed that prayer time, here are some requests to prompt you as we pray for: * Rescuers to find those who are still alive * Aid - including food, water, blankets, cooking and kitchen kits, medicine, as well as temporary shelter and tents, to make its way to the hardest-to-reach areas * Strength and comfort for the relief workers who are reaching out while navigating their own emotions and loss * Comfort for those who lost loved ones * Special protection of vulnerable women, children, and the elderly * God’s church to be strengthened and to expand * Grace upon the pastors who are ministering in the midst of their own trauma * For all 183 unreached people groups in Nepal to hear the good news about Jesus * Whole families and communities to come into God’s Kingdom together Because of you, Nepalese are receiving help and hope in the name of Jesus. We serve a God who is mighty to save! “This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” — 2 CORINTHIANS 9:12 THANK YOU! Thanks to your generosity, we are now a little over 75% of the way toward our Nepal Relief funding goal. There is still about 25% left to raise, and we invite you to support and pray with us as God continues to provide for the ongoing relief, rebuilding, and ministry taking place through local churches.
“They lost everything”: Nepal flood death toll continues to climb
A3’s network of churches is mobilizing to meet immediate needs. Nepal (MNN) — Shoes scattered everywhere. Cooking utensils stuck in the mud. The human toll of last week’s catastrophic flooding in Nepal continues to climb. Now, over 950 people are confirmed dead and more than 4,400 are still missing. Chittry with A3 recently returned from the disaster zone. He says, “People are really shocked and standing on the muddy road area, and… they’re worried so much. Most of the people…were worried losing most of their family members. Now slowly, slowly relief work is going there, and people are responding. Also the army and police [and] social workers are actually heavily engaged to rescue people, distributing the relief work in the village.” Satellite image of Gyirong Port before and after the flood 08/26/2026. (Photo, caption courtesy of Pomoscj3 – Own work, CC0)Entire communities have been stripped away, and many bodies have yet to be identified. “Many buildings were damaged and all under the mud,” says Chittry. “They lost everything. Not only their loved ones, but they lost all their properties and things they had. Only they came out. Some of them came out surviving empty handed. But many of their family members, where they are, they don’t know.” Christians are among those grieving. Chittry says churches have been damaged or swept away, and Christian families have been lost in the flooding. A3’s network of alumni and local churches is mobilizing to meet immediate needs, while preparing for the long road ahead. “Our presence there – even giving a bottle of water and clothes or a tent – that shows that Christians love them, care for them, and God is a loving God,” says Chittry. “That’s how they will understand. Not just speaking by mouth, but putting ourselves in action – so if the A3 family can just be in the field and show the love of God and serve them and…take care of them in this difficult situation.” “God is not punishing people, but God is actually teaching us to turn toward Him and come back to Him,” says Chitry. “Whatever they have lost, [is] lost. But God [has] spared their life to come to Him and know Him, and then experience His love in this situation.” You can give to A3’s Global Disaster Relief Fund here. Pray for grieving families to sense the Lord’s comfort, for sufficient relief supplies, and for wisdom for Christians serving survivors. Kumamoto church network ready to provide long-term relief
One month after earthquakes hit, Kumamoto residents work to rebuild. Japan (MNN)—One month after Kumamoto, Japan, was hit by 7.1- and 6.1-magnitude earthquakes in quick succession, residents are working to rebuild their lives. Electricity and gas services have been restored, and work is ongoing to repair disruptions to the water supply. However, more than 2,000 people are still in evacuation centers, in sweltering conditions.  Fortunately, Christian leaders are already in place to help provide long-term relief, thanks to the Kumamoto Mission Network. “The serious relief organizations, the ones that are quick to do on-the-spot solutions, they’re only there for a short period of time,” says Joe Handley of A3, “but the after-effects of something like this can last for years. That’s where the Kumamoto Mission Network comes into play.” This network, originally called the Kyushu Disaster Relief Organization, formed in 2016 to provide relief after the region was struck by a series of earthquakes, including a magnitude 7 quake. Churches in the region came together to reach out to people in need, providing both relief and the message of Christ.  Since then, the organization has morphed into a network of churches reaching the city of Kumamoto and the island of Kyushu for Christ, through church planting and long-term, sustainable care.  When disaster struck on July 28, 2026, the Kumamoto Mission Network was ready. They reached out to fellow members and began providing blankets, supplies, and food assistance for those impacted—showing the community that the churches care, and that God cares. This sets the foundation for providing long-term relief into the future. What makes Kumamoto Mission Network’s relief different is the fact they’re already part of the community. “They’ll be around—they live there,” says Handley. “Months from now, when all the disaster relief agencies are gone, who’s going to remain? It’s the members of the Kumamoto Mission Networks, these churches and NGOs, that are there to help out, and they’re there for the long-term care. They’ll do emotional support and counseling, and all the various elements of care that are needed. And who knows how long people will need to be in these shelters? That could last for months to years.” Pray the people impacted by the earthquakes will get the care they need, and that the church would rise to meet that need.  “This is one of those moments when the Gospel shows itself and shines brightest, in the midst of these crisis situations.” Listen to the broadcast (story begins at 2:50) Direct Link: https://a3-media.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/mnn/4-5min-Aug05-2026.mp3 Call to Action * Pray those impacted by the earthquakes will get the care they need. * Pray the church would rise to meet the need. * Learn more about serving in Japan at a3leaders.org/participate/go More Information * This story by Payton Lechner was originally published on 31-Aug-2026 by Mission Network News: https://www.mnnonline.org/news/kumamoto-church-network-ready-to-provide-long-term-relief/ * Header photo/image courtesy of Zion C via Unsplash. --- Mission Network News exists to inform multitudes about stories that matter and empower them to take action that changes lives. 7.1 magnitude earthquake rattles Japan’s Kyushu island, search for survivors ongoing
Major earthquakes destroyed a mill and shopping mall in Japan. Christian ministries look to provide comfort and aid. Japan (MNN) — Two major earthquakes rocked Japan’s Kyushu Island in quick succession yesterday. The 7.1- and 6.1-magnitude quakes, along with many smaller tremors, caused buildings and roads to collapse. Reportedly, it was strong enough to be felt across the sea in South Korea. Authorities temporarily issued a tsunami warning in place that thankfully was lifted hours later. The earthquake caused a chimney to collapse at a paper factory, and several workers remain missing. Perhaps the most notable consequence of the earthquake was at an Aeon shopping mall, where an additional explosion partially destroyed the building and ignited an ongoing crisis.        A castle in Kumamoto. Image courtesy of 貴彦 佐藤 on Pexels   Takeshi Takazawa with ministry A3 says many people were trapped under the rubble at the Aeon mall.  “Summer vacation has already started, so many families were out in the mall,” Takazawa says. “We don’t have a clear number yet about how many people are still alive. All the rescue teams are going there to try to save as many as possible from the rubble.” Multiple people are feared dead after the mall explosion, and authorities worked well through the night to excavate the rubble and get people out.  An earthquake hotspot Japan, which sits in the proverbial “Ring of Fire,” is one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world. Kumamoto, the area hardest hit, experienced a deadly earthquake in 2016. Many people worry that another earthquake is coming soon, as that is what happened during the disaster a decade ago.  Takazawa says, “Ten years ago, we developed a disaster relief network to rebuild and also to minister to the victims. That will be continuing because we haven’t completely closed that network yet.”       Image courtesy of A3   A3’s ministry focuses on developing Christ-centered leaders. They have brought Gospel hope to Japan many times, including after the famous 2011 Triple Disaster. Takazawa says that they spend the immediate aftermath of a disaster praying, calling and connecting with people, and gathering information about the event and how the church is doing through it. “After the rescue stage is over, we will begin to cooperate with the local pastors, people, and survivors, and then try to minister to the church and as well as through the churches to the community,” Takazawa says. Takazawa says that God miraculously saved and ministered to people during the Kumamoto disaster ten years ago and asks that we would ask for God to do the same today. Pray for God’s saving hand in the rescue operations at Aeon mall and elsewhere, and pray that He would minister to those who are suffering. A3 mobilizing to help Nepal flood survivors after deadly glacier collapse
Nepal (MNN) — There was little time to escape. On Wednesday morning, August 26, a chunk of glacier broke off a Himalayan mountainside in Tibet. The mass of ice and rock created a dam in the Lhende river below, which soon burst. This sent deadly flash floods hurtling deeper into Tibet as well as over the border into Nepal’s Rasuwa district and beyond downriver. The death toll surpassed 390 on Thursday, with more than 1,400 people missing.  Chitry from A3 still hasn’t heard from several pastors from the area, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the worst. “More than seven hydroelectric power stations are damaged. No electricity right now,” he says. With communication down, Chitry plans to travel to the disaster area to assess the needs. He might need permission from local security personnel. “High level[s] of government are meeting and discussing how they can help the disaster area,” he says. “They continue working now, and also they are giving priority to the women and the children, especially.” This is where the Body of Christ comes in. Chitry explains, “We need to go to the place where people are suffering, where people need the help, putting ourselves in action and showing them the love of God.”  Years ago, A3’s network helped earthquake survivors in Nepal. Several people became Christians after watching them serve. Please pray for comfort for those who lost family members, practical aid for those who lost their homes, and spiritual awakening for all flood survivors. “God is not punishing people, but God is actually teaching us to turn toward Him and come back to Him,” says Chitry. “Whatever they have lost, [is] lost. But God [has] spared their life to come to Him and know Him, and then experience His love in this situation.” You can also send financial help through A3’s global disaster relief fund.
Ask God to use their tangible compassion to point hurting people toward Christ.
Japanese Christians help earthquake survivors find hope
Japan (MNN) — As the latest disaster in southern Japan triggers difficult memories, local Christians step in to help survivors. Trauma resurfaces A series of strong earthquakes shook Kumamoto, Japan, in April 2016. On July 28, 2026, a pair of earthquakes struck the same area – one with a magnitude above 7.0 on the Richter scale and one just below – followed by hundreds of aftershocks. “[It’s been] 10 years since the last major earthquake in this area,” A3’s Robert Adair says. “They’ve just come through a really hard season, and here it’s happening again.” A Kumamoto University study found elevated levels of psychological distress, insomnia, and PTSD risk among survivors five years after the 2016 disaster. Then the earthquakes in late July reopened old wounds.       A disaster relief work team helps churches rebuild.(Image courtesy A3)   “Japanese people are resilient. Japan has excellent systems to handle disasters like this, but it’s taking them back to 10 years ago,” Adair explains. “A lot of the visual scars of that earthquake had been repaired, and then for another earthquake of this magnitude to happen was really shocking for people.” How Christians are responding A network of Japanese pastors trained by A3 is meeting spiritual needs in the aftermath. Instead of proclaiming the Gospel to strangers, believers build on established friendships. When “some sort of event (disaster) like this happens, it’s a natural place for Jesus to come into the conversation,” Adair says, “Christians are being naturally identified as the people of Jesus, and the way that their actions give integrity to the Gospel allows them to speak into people’s lives.” A3 partners with local church networks to empower ministry plans, working alongside leaders who are meeting community needs. Learn more about A3’s approach. Three Ways to Pray Pray that traumatized earthquake survivors will meet the Prince of Peace. “Please be praying that the people in Kumamoto would encounter Jesus in the midst of this disaster, whether through long-term friendships that local people have with Christians in their area, or volunteers from the outside,” Adair requests. Pray that Japanese Christians will continue reaching across denominational lines to help earthquake survivors. “[Pray] that they would work together, and they’d be able to clearly discern what the actual needs are on the ground,” Adair says. Finally, pray “that it would be the local people on the ground who are driving the conversation of what sort of response is needed following this earthquake,” he adds.
From Bud to Blossom: Selvi's Transformative A3.WIM Experience
A3.Women In Ministry (India) Participant Shares Her Testimonial I am Selvi Rajiv, and I'm part of the Women In Ministry batch here in India. I'm really excited to be part of the Women In Ministry here. This is a bunch of women who are in leadership and ministry who come together and meet every couple of months for a period of one to two years. We have a lot of fun, a lot of learning, a lot of growing up that happens together over the course of two years.  And for me personally, it has benefited me a lot. Whatever I have learned has really brought me closer to God personally, has taught me a lot of things, and has made me a much more stronger person. A3.WIM has brought out many talents that were hidden within me, things that even I didn’t know were inside me. This program has brought out things that were seated deep within me and have now come out of me. It is really so beautiful to look at my life. I haven’t gone through the entire process yet, as there are still two more modules to go. But just to see my life so beautifully bud and blossom within just the last three modules is so amazing. Seeing the way God has been dealing with me and transforming my life has been such an amazing process, and that is something incredible I’ve been witnessing in my own life. I’ve also developed many new friendships with women all across India. There is a new level of bonding with other women who serve God in various capacities. Now we support each other spiritually. We are there for one another when we need each other. We pray for one another and support each other in various ways, wherever we can. I’ve also seen other women grow spiritually in the Lord and be strengthened—women who came in very weak and now beginning to bud and blossom in those areas. So I’ve been seeing women being blessed as well.  Thank you! Selvi Rajiv Related A3.WIM Impact Stories: * Aporna L. The program helps participants grow as disciples of Christ and as influential ministry leaders by fostering strong relational support, addressing challenges like isolation and burnout, and encouraging Spirit-led change in their lives, families, churches, communities, and nations. Ultimately, WIM focuses on raising up “Esthers”—women who are empowered to contribute meaningfully to the building of God’s Kingdom and to lead with increased vision, character, and competence.

Opening God’s Gifts
Opening Unexpected Gifts Sometimes ministry moments begin in surprisingly simple ways. As we gathered for our first session with a new cohort of pastors and spouses, Joe welcomed everyone and I brought out a wrapped gift. One of the pastors volunteered to unwrap it while everyone watched. Inside was See’s Candy—a small treat from home—which was joyfully shared and enjoyed. I invited the group to open the gifts the Lord had for them in the following days.        A new A3 cohort of pastors and spouses gather together.         So often, God invites us to unwrap gifts we don’t expect: relationships, lessons, seasons of waiting, and blessings that arrive in His timing rather than ours. Building Community and Learning Together Our first introductions quickly revealed the warmth of the group. Even though translation was limited at times, laughter needs no interpreter. Stories flowed around the room—some joyful and humorous, others deeply moving. One testimony stays with me. One pastor shared how he had faithfully prayed for a wife, and how God provided the woman by his side. Their journey afterward was not easy. They endured heartbreak through several miscarriages before finally welcoming a son and daughter. This story reminds me that some of God’s greatest gifts are often received after seasons of perseverance and tears. Throughout the retreat, I was struck by how engaged everyone was. Discussions around the tables rarely needed encouragement; conversations naturally flowed. Joe’s teaching on Genesis 2 and the theme of “leave and cleave” sparked thoughtful dialogue, and the couples leaned into every opportunity to learn from one another. I was especially thankful when the main translator arrived in time for my session on the four temperaments. I appreciated the maturity and humility of the leaders present. One seasoned pastor gently suggested that using biblical characters as examples might resonate even more deeply than simply providing verses. I loved that he felt comfortable enough to offer that insight. Leadership flourishes where trust creates room for honest feedback. Strengthening Leaders and Families Exploring topics like mutual love, submission, power/control, money, and communication in marriage led to deeper dialogue. Before introducing my session on the five love languages, Joe humorously touched on the topic of intimacy in marriage. His story about helping one’s wife in the kitchen leading to a better sex life had everyone laughing. Yet beneath the humor were meaningful conversations. It was interesting to learn that words of affirmation are not naturally emphasized in this culture. Several men reflected honestly on how affection and encouraging words had been absent in their own childhood experiences. They shared their desire to break those patterns and create a different environment for their children.  Those moments felt sacred. Leadership development is never just about learning principles. It is about healing hearts, reshaping families, and allowing God to write a different story for the next generation. Creating Space for Growth On our final day after the morning session, Joe dismissed the couples early, encouraging them to take time to reflect, pray, and talk together about their goals. One of the women later expressed gratitude for having space simply to process and pray with her husband. Sometimes the most important ministry happens in the unstructured moments. Graduation day carried a different feeling as well. Without outside guests, it felt very intimate. Joe shared a meaningful recap of the four A3 outcomes, and several pastors gave testimonies about what God had done during the A3 journey. One of the younger leaders in the group spoke humbly about what a privilege it had been to learn alongside so many seasoned leaders. There was humility, gratitude, and a genuine sense of community in this cohort. Looking Ahead By the end, conversations had already shifted toward the future. Leaders were eagerly discussing how the next cohort could be crafted. They asked thoughtful questions about how to shape the experience moving forward, so that more leaders would be impacted. That may be one of my favorite parts of A3. We do not simply deliver a program. We help create spaces where local leaders can own the vision, contextualize it, and carry it forward in ways that fit their communities. I admire Joe’s confidence in the local leaders as he gives them freedom to adapt the experience within their own culture and context. As Joe and I reflected afterward, we realized we are growing more comfortable with the material each time we lead these experiences. Yet every setting teaches us something new. There is always more to learn, more to refine, and more to understand about the people and culture around us. But one thing remains constant: God continues giving us gifts. Often the greatest gifts are not programs or presentations. They are people, relationships, and the joy of seeing leaders grow together as Christ forms something beautiful among them. Will you open the gifts God has given you?
Churches coordinate relief after deadly Kyushu earthquakes
Japan’s churches prepare to serve earthquake survivors. Japan (MNN) — Severe summer heat continues to threaten earthquake survivors in southern Japan. A3’s Robert Adair says, “Many are still without running water or electricity,” one week after a pair of high-magnitude earthquakes rocked Kyushu. At last report, nearly 40 people have died, and more than 100 others were injured. Earthquakes destroyed an estimated 700 homes, while more than 11,000 buildings sustained damage. Roughly 8,500 people remain in evacuation shelters, and more than 46,000 households are still without running water. Clean water, electricity, cooling, sanitation, and safe shelter are among the most urgent needs as extreme heat complicates recovery efforts. The Body of Christ in Japan is ready – but waiting – to respond. “The government’s still doing the initial relief work and clearing up damage, so the Church doesn’t want to get in the way of that. But the Church wants to come in and help meet felt and spiritual needs as quickly as possible,” Adair says.       Image provided by MNN (AI photo)   “Several of our alumni are in the middle of that conversation.” Churches prepare A3 nurtures intentional learning communities to build and sustain Christian leadership around the world. More about that here. In Japan, community outreach and relationship development often involve disaster response. Immediately following last week’s earthquakes, some pastors in A3’s network made quick trips to the epicenter. “They’ve been delivering drinks and small supplies, but also trying to better understand the situation on the ground,” Adair says Now, believers are working across denominational lines to coordinate a response that puts Jesus’ love into action. “Over the next days and weeks, churches and organizations will be coming together to try to figure out a plan: what are their (survivors’) actual needs, and then how can those needs be met without overwhelming the local responders or becoming a burden to them?” Adair says.       Image provided by MNN (AI photo)   The earthquakes hit “a relatively rural or isolated part of Japan,” he continues. “People are starting to get down there and actually see with their own eyes what the needs are, how big the scale of this disaster is." As church leaders coordinate their efforts, prayer is the most important way to help. Pray for unity and discernment for the Body of Christ in Japan. “Pray for the people being impacted by this heat wave. Pray that people would not have heat stroke; that they’d get the water they need; that the electricity would come back online quickly,” Adair requests. “Pray for the people near the epicenter of this earthquake who are still at a relatively high level of risk, just due to the lack of resources.”   Listen to the broadcast (story begins at 2:50) Direct Link: https://a3-media.s3.amazonaws.com/audio/mnn/4-5min-Aug05-2026.mp3 Call to Action * As church leaders coordinate their efforts, prayer is the most important way to help. The Architectural Shift: Five Redemptive Frameworks Redefining the Future of the Marketplace
by ELLIOTT SNUGGS Modern professional life is often characterized by a fractured identity. On one side lies the relentless pursuit of scale, profit, and market dominance; on the other, a private, sequestered faith. For the high-impact leader, these two worlds rarely converge in a way that feels structurally sound. However, A3 recently completed the first cohort of marketplace leaders in Ecuador as part of it’s A3.business initiative.  This initiative is serving as a cultural catalyst in Ecuador, empowering leaders to dissolve the sacred-secular divide. They are moving beyond the surface-level "business ethics" of the past toward a model of Apostolic Entrepreneurship—reimagining the marketplace not as a secular necessity, but as a primary place for societal transformation. These leaders are implementing radical, counter-intuitive shifts that move from transaction to transformation. Here is how some of them are restructuring the scaffolding of the marketplace. 1. The "Divine Ownership" Contract: Reassigning the CEO Seat In traditional corporate governance, the ultimate objective is the consolidation of ownership. However, Fernanda ("Fer"), leader of the prestigious legal and tax firm Guillem & Asociados, has pioneered a move that is as legally rigorous as it is spiritually radical: the "Divine Ownership" contract. Fer transitioned from "owner" to "steward" by executing a formal, symbolic contract that transferred the title of her firm to God. This was not a mere poetic gesture; it was a strategic shift in liability and peace. When managing high-stakes litigation, Fer realized that surrendering ownership allows for a level of clarity that ego-driven leadership cannot access. By legally and spiritually reassigning the CEO seat, the burden of the firm’s ultimate outcome shifted from her shoulders to the One she serves. "I made a contract with the Lord, and I told Him: 'Lord, I deliver this law firm to You.' In the normal structure, I was the owner. Now, I am not the owner of anything. I signed a contract delivering the firm and putting myself as a manager or steward of it." — Fer 2. The Corporation as a Ministry: The "Todo Agro" Discipleship Loop Patricio, the leader of the agricultural company Todo Agro, is dismantling the idea that a company merely supports a ministry. In his framework, the business is the ministry. This represents a pivot from "providing agricultural solutions" to being a vessel for redemptive work within the supply chain. Patricio has institutionalized a "discipleship loop" that views every stakeholder as a member of a spiritual congregation: * Clients: Served with a depth that reflects Kingdom-caliber excellence. * Providers: Engaged through a lens of radical transparency and honor. * Collaborators: Treated as the primary mission field, where professional development is inseparable from spiritual formation.   The shift is definitive: The company’s primary KPI is no longer just its capacity to sell, but its capacity to serve as a platform for God’s work. 3. The Theology of Windows: Structural Clarity and Strategic Recovery For Sebastián ("Sebas"), his entry into the construction and finishes industry—specializing in glass, aluminum, and facades—was born out of a real need. Having lost everything—money, fame, and status—he did not rebuild using traditional recovery methods. Instead, he utilized a "Personal Roadmap" rooted in Proverbs 3:5–6 as a strategic document for professional restoration. Sebas views his work with glass and facades through a "Theology of Windows." If windows provide the clarity and light for a physical structure, they mirror the spiritual transparency required in leadership. He posits that the exterior of a building should reflect the internal light of its inhabitants. For Sebas, the Personal Roadmap is the blueprint that ensures his new ventures remain structurally sound, ensuring that every facade he builds is backed by an internal foundation of faith. 4. Interior Design as Social Restoration: The "Casanova" Mission In the specialized world of interior design, Cristian and Priscila, leaders of the firm Casanova, are addressing a profound social wound within the Ecuadorian migrant community in the United States. Many migrants in Queens and New Jersey send remittances home to build houses that often remain skeletal symbols of failure or abandonment. Through his program Regresar a Casa (Return Home), this business couple use high-end design and construction supervision as a tool for emotional and social restoration. They aren’t just finishing buildings; they are "preparing the place to rebuild memories." This mission provides a massive emotional ROI, helping families reclaim their heritage and providing a tangible incentive for reunification. It is a high-signal example of how professional craftsmanship can be leveraged to heal the trauma of migration. 5. The Marketplace as a Political Altar: The "Esther" Call to Action Perhaps the most contested frontier for the faith-driven strategist is the political and legal sphere. Paola has embraced this often-avoided field as a necessary "light" in the rooms where legislation is forged. Operating through the platform Socio Vida and her role in the Ibero-American Congress for Life and Family, she acts as a "citizen participant" influencing the defense of life, family, and childhood. This is a counter-intuitive embrace of a "dark" industry, fueled by the conviction that the marketplace and the government are altars where the future of a nation is decided. Her work is a strategic response to the "Esther" call—a leader positioned in the palace for the protection of a generation. "You are being an Esther in this time... an Esther in this generation in Ecuador." — Practitioner to Paola Conclusion: From Legacy of Wealth to Legacy of People The A3 movement is a harbinger of a new movement of transformation in the marketplace in Ecuador. Leaders like Carlos are currently developing a "Treaty on Kingdom Economy" (Tratado de la Economía del Reino), while others, like Jorge, are exploring the "tokenization of real estate" as a means of democratizing wealth and fueling Kingdom expansion. These strategists understand that the future of the marketplace isn't just about financial accumulation; it’s about Economic Redemptive Frameworks. The most enduring legacy a leader can leave is not a legacy of wealth, but a legacy of people transformed by the integration of faith and excellence. If your business was a ministry, what would be the first "contract" you’d rewrite today? The shift from transaction to transformation begins when we realize our profession is the scaffolding, but the people are where transformation happens.   Elliott Snuggs More information: * Inset photo of window courtesy of Jay Lo on Unsplash * Inset photo of homes in Ecuador courtesy of Evan Wise on Unsplash

Japan earthquake survivors battle aftershocks, heat, and trauma
Hope fades for survivors in southern Japan as earthquake rescue efforts shift to recovery. Japan (MNN) — The death toll from Tuesday’s twin tremors in Kyushu had risen to 34 at the time of publication and was expected to climb. A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Kyushu on Tuesday afternoon, trapping people in collapsed buildings and briefly triggering tsunami advisories along parts of the coast. A 6.1-magnitude earthquake followed in quick succession, along with scores of aftershocks. Shelters are overflowing as authorities inspect transport links and infrastructure. “I’ve gotten reports of some Japanese temples that were either completely destroyed in one case, or the gates were destroyed in another. They’ve even suspended the bullet train, which is a key form of transportation,” A3’s Joe Handley says. New threats: aftershocks and heat Today, aftershocks and sweltering summer heat pose the biggest threats to responders and quake survivors. “They’re anticipating further quakes to hit Kyushu," Handley says. “The tremors that might follow could be up to seven or eight on the Richter scale; that would supersede the original quake." The threat of additional tremors compounds another urgent concern: extreme heat. Officials urge survivors and relief workers to take precautions against heatstroke, but utility damage makes that difficult.        A woman in Kyoto, Japan finds relief from the summer heat using a personal fan and an umbrella to shield herself from the sun. (Photo courtesy of note thanun/Unsplash)   “Almost 35,000 homes are without electricity, 15,000 of them without any running water,” Handley says. "More than 9,000 people “have left their homes and are stuck in about 400 shelters across the area.” Japan’s defense minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, announced on Wednesday that the government would deliver 300 air conditioners to Kumamoto, with 150 of the units bound for evacuation centers. AEON Mall in Kumamoto drew global attention in the quake’s immediate aftermath. “They were there in droves because the mall is a great place to escape the heat,” Handley says. “Fortunately, they’ve already evacuated over 3,000 people.” Previously damaged by a series of earthquakes in 2016, the mall had reopened last month. Thousands were inside the shopping center when the first earthquake hit. Then, the second floor collapsed, trapping people in the wreckage. Re-living trauma While responders meet physical needs, pastors in A3’s disaster relief network provide spiritual care. Some survivors told A3 that this week’s earthquake made them relive a nightmare. The July 28 tremor “comes 10 years after a terrible quake that hit the Kyushu Island, which was devastating. Over 50 people died, and the destruction that happened was huge,” Handley says, “Reports are [coming to us] from people who lived through that one, saying things like, ‘I thought I was going to die. It was worse than the 2016 quake.’" Ask the Prince of Peace to comfort earthquake survivors. Follow MNN on X, Facebook, or Instagram for more updates. “There’s a lot of concern going around, and I’m sure more will follow. We really appreciate you being willing to spread the news because the people need prayer,” Handley says. The Architectural Shift: Five Redemptive Frameworks Redefining the Future of the Marketplace
by ELLIOTT SNUGGS Modern professional life is often characterized by a fractured identity. For the high-impact leader, these two worlds rarely converge in a way that feels structurally sound.
