Legal aid attorney: advocate for those the world says aren't deserving, b/c called to replicate the Incarnation, Christ walking among us. We're all broken, the only difference is some know it. Posting work observations of the crushing rock the poor face.

The most effective thing being done to stop immigration is to turn the United States into such a shit hole country that no reasonable person would want to be here.

I know I have no followers so no one will see this, but I have to say it: folks waiting for the bridge too far should stop hoping in that, it will never come. The slow boil over 9/50 years has guaranteed that. They are pot-committed to the evil now.

The work does not begin today. There were vulnerable people yesterday. There would have been vulnerable people tomorrow, no matter who was inaugurated. Today we mourn. Tomorrow we say a prayer and get back to it.

Today's work observation: education due process complaints are intended to protect children with disabilities. From what I can tell, they are more likely to protect the school districts which fail those children.

It won't because most of us aren't paying attention and/or don't care. If we were paying attention and cared, what has been reported would have been enough for us to demand its end. We did not demand its end. QED.

Today's work observation: the foster system is not equipped to deal with the broken children who are its purpose. The ones that escape it as whole, functioning adults are miracles. But we can try to be that miracle for a child.

What I can't figure out is, when the GOP finally manages to kill the ACA, SS, Medicare and Medicaid, how will they blame it on the Dems so that their base keeps voting for them? Or is the goal here to eliminate the republic entirely first, so as to but have to worry about those pesky "votes"?

This is how we roll. This is how we have always rolled. The sacrifice of the vulnerable buys them some words, maybe a moment of silence, but it never buys recognition of their humanity.

Today's work observation: special education due process is supposed to protect vulnerable students, but the deck is entirely stacked in the school district's favor. Timelines, standards of proof, the fact that they will bring a lawyer and most parents cannot afford one...

Today's work observation: it's almost impossible for Medicaid and most Medicare recipients (so, your parents/grandparents) to have anything but routine dental care covered? For instance, teeth breaking off due to illness? Can't get them extracted. I've had multiple clients with this problem.

Today's work observation: did social security pay you benefits 10, 15, 20 years ago? Watch out, they night decide tomorrow that they should not have, and come knocking to demand it back. They do this to America's most vulnerable (the elderly and disabled) everyday.

Today's work observation (someday, someone might read these): legal aid has a lot less capacity to assist than people seem to think. We turn away WAY TOO MANY people bc they either make too much $$ (and our cutoffs are much lower than you might guess) or bc we have no capacity for their legit issue.

Yesterday's work observation, on the blindness of justice: representing yourself without an attorney even in what should be the more loose system of an administrative hearing process, is a recipe for complete disaster. "The justice system" is where we really put a fine point on our class system.

Watched "The Holdovers" to ring in the new year. Not bad, but why do so many of these stories (I can think of at least three others, there must be more) have as their setting the uber-privileged and very uncommon setting of the all male boarding school? Cliche and unrelatable and a bit offensive.

Today's work observation: even in a state that is trying hard to protect tenants, the landlords hold ALL the cards if they want to evict a tenant. When tenants pay them even every penny of an arrearage after the notice period passes, the LL can accept the money and still evict with impunity.

It strikes me again that one major problem with the world is that way too many people are entirely self-focused but manage to think of themselves as "good" because they are "nice". I'd rather be/know a good jackass than a nice NIMBY (to name one category).

I'm trying to post 1 thought or observation from work every workday. Today's: interviewing a DV victim this afternoon, I realize again how utterly retraunatizing it can be just to have to talk about it. Gisele Pelicot's strength is truly remarkable. Christine Blassey Ford's as well, to name another.

Most (every??) state has "escheat" laws req'ing banks, ins. cos., employers to turn $$ over to the state if they can't find the owner? And they don't bother looking. Find your state's lost property fund website, look up your name, you may find $$. >>1 client has found much needed $$ there.

If you're poor and your landlord doesn't like you, there's a decent chance they can evict you if you allow your partner to sleep over more than a couple of nights a month. (Depends on your lease terms and state/local law, but I've seen it happen).

Is there a way to bookmark (BM) a thread? User asks for recs, I want to read the responses later so I want to BM it? I can't seem to find anything for this. And I can't BM by responding bc OP locked it bc it got too long. I do not want to repost to BM. That should not be the answer.
