Cascading climate impacts and adaptation in miniature. After a night of torrential rain in #Edinburgh, topsoil and charred debris washed down a gully from the area burnt in this summer's gorse #wildfires on Arthur's Seat. Historic Environment Scotland's […] [Original post on fediscience.org]
A fan of dark soil spreads across a road from a gap in red/white traffic barriers, below a gully in the steep South side of Arthur's Seat, with blackened gorse bushes up the hillside.

Well no thanks @Fairphone for dropping support of the FP3 last month. Not great when the USB port stopped charging (1% per hour?) and my #InterRail pass to get home from 4500km #StayGrounded trip 🚅🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇧🇪🇩🇪🇩🇰🇸🇪🇳🇱🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 was only on the phone 😬! So yay […] [Original post on fediscience.org]

Clinging on to the clifftop, where the path drops out of the sunlight. Dunglass, East Lothian. #ThickTrunkTuesday #Trees #Scotland
A low rock face in shadow, with a big, contorted oak root clinging to the top. The trunk rises above, balancing just over the drop. To the left, the path leads away in a tunnel of low trees.

Levels, In the Yorkshire Wolds. #ThickTrunkTuesday

Solid ash by the remains of a drystone wall, above Stirling, #Scotland. Seen a lot, will it see off ash dieback? It might well. #ThickTrunkTuesday
Broad ash trunk rising from green grass into light blue sky, with moss and white lichen covering the bark. Younger deciduous trees on the slope rising behind it, not yet in leaf at Easter.

#ThickTrunkTuesday Mossy, rainforesty oaks above Loch Tay #Scotland
Two mossy trunks on a rise above the loch, the nearer one has a big unhealed tear-out, where it lost a limb.

Still rooted. Oaks in Roslin glen above the gunpowder mill, at the #GoldenHour. Zoom in and crop? Feel free. #ThickTrunkTuesday #Scotland #Trees
A cliff over the North Esk river with two trees growing partly, or entirely, over the edge. Leafless as it's early March in Scotland. One oak is a good 15m tall with a wide canopy, all suspended over space. The last Spring sun of the evening has the whole scene in golden tones.

Not very far from the lab. View from a tree on campus, ropes and gear to the left.

🚄 Eurostar check-in is still the weakest link, on this trip in Paris rather than London. Bit of a wait to get through the distant door circled in green.
People queuing, a dozen wide, into the distance.

Grave markers and weeping beech, Dean cemetery, #Edinburgh #ThickTrunkTuesday #trees
A ribbed beech trunk displaces a headstone as it thickens, while the weeping branches create a backdrop curtain of leaves. The sun behind the trunk backlights the foliage and peeps past an upper limb, forming a starburst.

Regrowth in #Berlin. #ThickTrunkTuesday
A 1m-thick trunk leaning slightly to the right that was cut (or broken) off about 3m up, with now strong regrowth forming a moderate crown leaning to the left. The healthy green canopy stands in front of the fresh white and yellow paint of the Charlottenburg palace.
