“Winning the argument will depend not on proving 2016 was a mistake, but convincing the country that 2026 demands something different.” @zoegrunewald.bsky.social on Burnham’s challenge in reopening the EU debate (citing recent British Future research) national.thelead.uk/p/andy-burnh...

Burnham has opened the door to Europe. Now he has to stop looking back
Burnham’s EU pivot is long overdue realism. Now he needs an argument about security and growth, not a rerun of the referendum

Of course! Both can be true. But I think ultimately convincing the public will lie in what rejoining can do for the country now, rather than telling voters -- many of whom still feel their vote was a reasonable expression of anger -- they were misled

Telling them they were manipulated doesn’t change their minds. I think the case for returning is strong and we should continually call out Russian interference, but I think winning the argument lies in the opportunities and the future of Britain. Hopefully that makes sene!

I'm not saying it's not relevant, of course it is, I just worry about leaning too hard on delegitimising the 2016 vote. Many still see their vote as a legitimate expression of dissatisfaction with a political system that had ignored them for years.

There is danger in leaning too hard on the idea that the referendum was illegitimate. Many leave voters still see their vote as a legitimate expression of dissatisfaction with a political system that had ignored them for years. Telling them they were manipulated by Moscow wont change their minds

Yep, and it strengthens the defence/security case for rejoining!

Zoë Grünewald @zoegrunewald.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
I think thats true to an extent, especially making clear the threat that Russia poses and the solution being greater alignment with our allies and neighbours. But I think the argument for rejoining needs to be about future opportunities for the country and its citizens

My feeling is that Burnham won’t win the "Breturn" (sorry) debate be relitigating 2016. The case for Europe has to be about our future security, growth and a world that’s changed, not who lied on a bus. substack.com/home/post/p-...

But that’s what I mean! At the minute her vision is just WE GET GROWTH with no “why”. And you could argue the need to articulate a vision is even more pertinent considering she clearly doesn’t want a larger state. What’s growth for, then? Enriching individuals? Fine.. but what about society?

I was arguing with a Tory commentator on the radio last night who argued that growth and deregulation WAS the sell and it’s like no! it’s not! What could be exciting (to some voters) is what they DO for the country, they’re just mot exciting ends to themselves for most people

Kind of, but there was a vision for the Tory party historically that sat somewhere along the line of Britain as a culturally rich, punching above its weight soft power… so there was a push for net zero, international rules etc etc. but all that’s gone and all that’s left is bitterness

And I can’t help feeling so much of this is driven by a political culture shaped by atomised social media that no longer views the country as a collective with a social contract and mutual obligations but a kind of woke construct designed to fleece us

It feels like so much of right wing politics now is just “burn it all to the ground” for the sake of it (or because people DESERVE IT), without really making a case for what good would come out of it

Kemi Badenoch’s whole shtick is slash and burn, which is red meat for the Westminster-brained, but for the wider electorate… what actually is her vision for what emerges from the ashes? What sort of country does she want us to become? Seemingly just one that’s punitive, uncaring and nasty?

Also loving all the contortions of when someone is independent - the Conservatives think an 18-year-old is enough of an adult to sign up to a lifetime of student debt they weren't properly informed about, but not for the state to assess them for benefits on their own terms. Totally makes sense

The argument behind “suicidal empathy” is that compassion is self-defeating. Burnham’s proposition is the inverse. Compassion is what gives you the conviction to make difficult decisions in the first place. Politics does not require us to care less, but to care more.
