What are those funky lumps and bumps on plants? Introducing: galls! Simply put, they're growths on plants, made from plant tissue. And they can be caused by insects, bacteria or fungus. Once you start to spot them, you'll see them everywhere!

📢 Dates for temporary closure of The Welsh Wildlife Centre Our Visitor Centre will close from 4pm on 19th December and re-open on Saturday 6th February 2027. This will allow planned building works to take place on the site. You can still access Teifi Marshes nature reserve 24/7 during this time.

Spot the difference: climate change edition 🔍 These photos show how different the landscape of Skomer Island looks between 2023 and 2026. In previous years Skomer has been covered in lush vegetation throughout the summer months. This year there was little greenery in sight.

We're searching for Dormice in Cardiff! 🐁 Last month, our Wilder Engagement Officer, Alex, helped set up a new Hazel Dormouse footprint survey in the Plymouth Great Wood. This stretch of woodland along the River Ely in Cardiff currently has no records of Dormouse presence.

Today we remember the 112 men and boys who lost their lives in the Parc Slip Colliery disaster on 26th August 1892. Every year a service is held on the anniversary at the memorial at Parc Slip Nature Reserve.

Our Conservation Team have been continuing to assess the condition of habitats on our nature reserves. Last week, through surveys in grasslands and woodlands. 🌳 But they've been faced with a very noticeable impact of this summer's drought and heatwaves. Put simply, everything is incredibly dry.

Seal pupping season is here 🦭 You might spot seal pups alone on Welsh beaches. This isn’t unusual and doesn’t mean the pup has been abandoned. The mothers return to the sea for short foraging trips, but will keep an eye on their pup and return regularly to them. 📸 Thinesh Thirugnanasampanthar

Happy World Lizard Day!🦎 This is a Common Lizard, spotted by our Wilder Engagement Officer, at Parc Slip Nature Reserve. It's one of 3 lizard species we have in the UK: Common Lizard, Sand Lizard, and Slow Worm (yes, Slow Worms are actually lizards, despite the name and snake-like appearance!)

🦈 Our Angelshark sightings in Cardigan Bay have been published in @esr-ir.bsky.social science journal! We had 3 sightings of Angelsharks in 2024 and 2025 on our underwater cameras in Cardigan Bay. These were in the IUCN Cardigan-Caernarfon Bay Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA).

The journeys of Bottlenose Dolphins are somewhat of a mystery 🐬 Most of the time they are underwater and out of sight. So, where do they go when we cannot see them?

We’re taking care of a new island! The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is pleased to announce the 20-year lease of Middleholm Island from National Trust Cymru. Middleholm, along with Skomer, Skokholm, Cardigan and St Margaret’s, will become the fifth island in our care.

Introducing the latest members of our team 🐮 We recently welcomed two new cattle to Parc Slip Nature Reserve. We use conservation grazing at a number of our nature reserves as part of our land management. These grazing animals keep Bracken and Brambles at bay, helping rarer plants to thrive.
