because i found myself posting under a few other replies: hosting your own website is still using a company to host your website. Free places are still good! ComicFury lets you use your own domain! The thing you would want is a DOMAIN, so you don't have to change all your business cards/redirect!

That I wasn't necessarily ready for and at the time, the tools weren't as robust as they might be now (I haven't checked in a while). Maybe one day when I'm in a better spot I'll be ready for it again. ...I say as I maintain 3 other sites that aren't my webcomics 🫠😂

Yeah I had to kind of learn that the hard way about having AC on a self hosted site. It wasn't hundreds of dollars to host, but it WAS certainly Dollars to get it to how I wanted and then many hours when it came time to look stuff up to change things without it breaking. Just lots of maintenance,

And to be abundantly clear, when I say 'services' I am talking about shit like Squarespace and Wix, and not, actual people you can hire.

I do hope people consider the alternatives we have available, like Comic Fury, and to support those alternatives in any way one can to keep them running for everyone to use and enjoy.

I have a couple of self hosted sites. They're not perfect. they're wordpress- sometimes I am still afraid of getting too into it because there goes an entire afternoon trying to get something to look just so. That's mainly why I moved my comics to comicfury. Wordpress comic CMS options are (???)

Making comics is hard enough, and making them on hostile platforms for a bit of cash is another ball game entirely. So is putting them in front of readers. Trying for any kind of viability in comics is not easy. We know this.

I used to be one of those people pushing for self hosted sites, and while I still think it is a skill VERY much worth learning, it's a skill you truly have to make time for and maintain. There are services that make this easier, but aren't worth the cash/aren't customizable.

I'm sorry to hear about tapas. I'm not really in the business of "I told you so's" and making folks feel shameful for not having a self-hosted place for their comics. Hosting a standalone site is a different skill set depending on what you want to do with it,

On gods, these are all so real and true but #3 is very much me. I will never not be excited about the giant skeleton. At any time of year, Really!

I always hear complaints about Halloween decor being out too early, but I never hear a peep out of anyone about Christmas junk being out too early.
