"Teaching assistants, cleaners and all other support staff are long overdue a better deal. Any money saved from the local government pension scheme must go towards improving their pay and conditions.

"”This plan also raises practical concerns about how any redistribution of pensions will work. Schools don’t pay the same pension contributions across the country.

"Some could be left without any budget savings because their employer contributions won’t actually fall."
