Today, the Trump administration finalized a rollback of fuel economy standards for passenger cars and trucks. This move effectively kills the nation's CAFE standards, a program that has saved drivers $321 billion in fuel costs since 2010. Read UCS Statement: act.ucs.org/46NApCk
“The federal government’s decision to gut fuel economy standards is a handout to automakers and oil companies that will strap American consumers already struggling with an affordability crisis...Weakening these standards means drivers will spend more on fuel while having fewer options to choose efficient vehicles."

The speed, scope, and severity of attacks on the environment have been relentless. Here’s a quick recap of what President Trump and his “polluter worker bees” have accomplished on behalf of the fossil fuel industry:
Infographic titled “Trump’s Polluter Worker Bees,” featuring a black-and-white photo of Donald Trump at the top and five smaller portraits arranged below. The profiles identify Lee Zeldin, Doug Burgum, Chris Wright, David Fotouhi, and Nancy Beck alongside their Trump administration positions. Brief text summarizes each person’s past ties to fossil fuel, chemical, or other regulated industries and describes environmental policies or actions attributed to them. The design uses black, white, red, and gold, with each portrait framed by a gold hexagon.

A report by US Senate leaders details "transactional corruption" between the fossil fuel industry and the Trump administration. Dismantling pollution protections. Installing oil execs at the EPA. Over $190 BILLION in industry subsidies over the next decade. And that's just the tip of the iceberg🧵⬇️
Graphic showing a black-and-white government building beneath several industrial smokestacks releasing thick clouds of dark smoke. An American flag flies above the building. Large red and white text reads: “The Billion Dollar Deal: How the Fossil Fuel Industry Bought the Trump Administration, Cashed In, and Left Americans to Pay the Price.”

We have been closely tracking these attacks on science and documented the termination of nearly 200 federal advisory committees in 2025 alone. 🔗 act.ucs.org/4zQNgRv
Bar chart titled “Terminated Federal Advisory Committees by Fiscal Year.” The x-axis shows fiscal years 1997 through 2025, and the y-axis shows the number of terminated committees, ranging from 0 to 200. Most years have between about 20 and 60 terminations. Notable peaks occur around 2001 (about 75 terminations), 2004 (about 100), and especially 2025 (about 190), which is by far the highest value on the chart. Terminations generally decline after 2010, reaching lows of roughly 10 to 20 per year in the early 2020s, before the sharp spike in 2025. Source note indicates GSA FACA dashboard data current as of July 9, 2026.

Were the proposal to go into effect, it would further accelerate the damage this administration is doing to scientific research—new reporting from Nature shows that NSF is already on track this year to issue the lowest number of new grants in four decades. 🔗 www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Line chart titled “Grants Throttled” showing a sharp decline in U.S. National Science Foundation research grants after early 2025. The chart plots cumulative new research grants awarded (in thousands) across the fiscal year, from October to September. Gray lines for fiscal years 2021 to 2024 rise steadily to about 11,000 to 12,000 grants by September. A blue line for 2025 ends at about 8,600 grants. An orange line for projected 2026 ends at about 6,100 grants. Accompanying text states that, since the return of the Trump administration in early 2025, NSF data indicate roughly 6,100 new awards are expected in fiscal year 2026, about 29% fewer than in 2025 and about 46% below the 2021 to 2024 average. This August, our partners from Scientist Network for Advancing Policy (SNAP) are organizing meetings with local congressional offices to advocate against proposed OMB grant rule changes that could reshape federally funded research. Join this effort here: bit.ly/4cmxxzl
Promotional flyer from the Scientist Network for Advancing Policy (SNAP) titled “Congressional District Visits.” The flyer invites scientists to advocate for science at their local congressional office. It highlights concerns about a proposed 412-page overhaul of federal grant rules by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), stating that funding could be tied to political priorities and grants could be terminated without appeal. Another message notes that science funding is on the line and that members of Congress will be home in their districts during August. The flyer emphasizes that constituents and scientists can make a meaningful difference by sharing their voices. At the bottom, a QR code directs readers to complete a form by August 7 to learn more about joining a SNAP-organized district visit.
