Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of UAW icon Roy Reuther, born on this day in 1909 in Wheeling, West Virginia. Roy, who oversaw much of the UAW's political work during his brother Walter's presidency, was also a key leader of the historic 1936-37 GM Flint Sit-Down Strike.

63 years ago today, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom brought nearly 250,000 people to Washington, D.C. to protest racial discrimination and demand economic justice. The UAW supported the march with signage emphasizing the interconnection of racial and labor justice.

On this day in 1935, the American Federation of Labor officially chartered the UAW in Detroit, Michigan. Prior to the dues checkoff system, union members would receive a button every time they paid their dues. This showed that they were current in their dues and was a visual display of solidarity.

Today, we remember Stephen Yokich, born on August 20, 1935. Brother Yokich served as the 8th president of the UAW from 1995 to 2002, overseeing negotiations for increased benefits, expanding the union into new fields, and leading the UAW through a time of great change in the auto industry.
