My first recording of 2026. The wonderful House Sparrow. ⁣ ⁣ I chanced upon a gorgeous flock today and it became my first recording of 2026. Here’s to many more. ⁣ ⁣ I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. #wildlife #birdsound #birds #wildlifesounds #birding

I’m back here after an absence. I was trying to cut back on apps. I feel like I’m being shadow-banned on instagram so this seems like a nicer place to revisit Here’s a video from a mic deployment in Barcelona, in the midst of a wonderful thunderstorm. I got so wet it didn’t matter! It was beautiful

The start of a new chapter! I’ve been meaning to explore underwater sounds for some time. This recorder will remain submerged for 24hrs as a test. Let’s see what swims around it tonight, when the tide rises and the people leave. Just my mic, the sea, and the fish!

Thank you everyone for a great night at Cork Opera House! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d fill 750 seats in my home city one day. What a privilege to do that talking about the thing I love so much. Nature. You all give me so much hope. See you at the next! Lots more venues to go.

Currently have mics running at three sites here in Catalunya. The lack of human noise at each is astounding. Can’t wait to see what I’ve captured!

Tour almost ready to go! Lots of new sounds & stories as well as new threads & elements to others. The first two gigs are sold out with most others heading that way. I can’t wait! I have a few mics to collect here before coming home from Catalunya so hope to add even more sounds.

1/6🧵 It was around this time last year that I was given this chance to talk about the thing that means the most to be on what is a huge national platform (thank you RTE and thank you Tommy Tiernan and team)

Two song types from a Wood Warbler in an Irish Sessile Oak Woodland. Now both sadly very rare. This bird was a real treat to sit with and listen to. I'd imagine this was once a much more common sound, in the very distant past, when oak woodlands were more common.

This fast flowing water was almost singing to me. I heard it from afar and tracked it down the the exact source. I just had to record it. I was searching for Dippers again, but I always get distracted. But that's what makes the day - these beautiful distractions.

1/3🧵 Setting up my mics one night, I glanced at, but took no particular notice of, a large slug (not the individual in photo - this one I saw in SE Asia!) right by my kit.     I finally solved the mystery of the odd scratchy sounds I sometimes heard in my recordings!

Another gorgeous morning out soaking up nature and placing/collecting mics in East Cork. The highlight for this trip was seeing the delicate and rather scarce (in these parts) Tunbridge Filmy-fern for the first time ever. Now to analyse sounds…

Clicking sounds from many brown shrimp (crangon crangon), recorded from a small pier in West Cork with a hydrophone (an underwater microphone).    If you listen very closely you will hear a distant limpet grazing on algae.    It's another world down there and I'm looking forward to exploring it!

Gently lapping waves, very low levels of anthropogenic noise, no wind, and ten displaying black guillemots right below me. This was a perfect recording scenario - bliss.

Just collected this unit after a week-long deployment from its ethereal, misty, dripping, gorgeous, Irish Atlantic rainforest hiding place. Analysis tonight. What will it have heard and captured? These units are my absolute favourite - sturdy, long-lived, waterproof and with pin-sharp sound.

A grey seal snorts and loafs around amidst a sunny, bustling seafood festival at Kilmore Quay, Co. Wexford, presumably hoping for fish scraps from the numerous fishing boats tied up.

Short-eared owl wing-clapping and calling, with the company of some whooper swans in the background.    Recorded with an SM4 at a then long-term, listening station on the Wexford coast, on the 17th Jan' 2022.    This is possibly my favourite ever recording, of this seldom-heard migratory owl.

Saleen Creek, Co. Cork - 16/01/22 A mixed group of teal, redshank, dunlin and black-tailed godwits feed and take advantage of the last of the exposed mud as the tide rapidly advances. Calls echo through the stillness.

My current obsession is dipper. A wonderful semi-aquatic songbird which sings with liquid grace but does so in fast flowing rivers. White noise is the problem. I just need to find a still point with a song-rock. I’ll get there. But it means we get to explore woods and rivers! Happy Xmas!

Calls from a colony of Little Terns at Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow. This colony holds approximately 40% of the entire Irish population and is expertly managed each year by Birdwatch Ireland volunteers. Amazing work. Listen to the energetic calls of our smallest tern with lovely surf sounds!

The sonic world of nocturnal migration is fascinating. It shines a light on the unknown & lets you hear birds in an out of place context. Here is a Coot migrating along the rugged Ballycotton cliffs @ 00:25am last May. Hear the crashing waves & echo of its calls bounce off the cliffs as it goes.

Well, this is now happening & I am beyond excited!⁣ ⁣ So far I have 14 counties confirmed, & more lining up. All in lovely theatres and arts centres, too. A proper tour!⁣ ⁣ As soon as things are fully confirmed I will share more. ⁣ ⁣ I can't wait to see you all. Poor Alba is sick of my bird stories!

A throwback from summer: “Calling song of Roesel's Bush-cricket from one of only two known Irish sites for this species! Recorded today during a gap in the wind, with a nice spell of sun. I had never seen or heard this species in Ireland before so it was a real treat to stumble upon them at last.”

Chaffinch "rain song". Far from the usual melodic song, this alternative is said to predict impending rain 😉. It’s highly variable, and is in fact dialect-prone. It can range from this sweet note all the way to a buzzy wheeze!

Starlings aren't our only mimics, in fact MANY passerines do it Listen to this Robin song with mimicry of Blue Tit at approx. 55s. Whilst not as frequent or accurate as some species, Robins do indeed include mimicry in their songs.

Begging calls and a feeble long call attempt from a 2nd calendar year Iceland gull - recorded on the 10th April 2022 at Dingle Harbour, Co. Kerry. This is a recording I thought I'd never get, from a bird you just don't hear too often, it being just a scarce and not very vocal winter visitor.

Join me and several other authors for a Christmas book signing in Waterstones Cork. Today from 5-6pm.     I love this store. This is where I wandered eagerly as a kid, keeping a close eye on any new nature book arrivals. This place helped fuel my imagination and send me on my nature-filled journey.

I still cannot believe that my little book took Irish Biography of the Year. I cannot reply to all of the messages but please know that I see and appreciate every one of them. Now I just hope that the messages in my book spread far and wide and that they can act as seeds of change. Up nature!

I’m so excited to speak at the iconic Other Voices in Dingle this weekend. There are lots of wonderful speakers attending and it’s an honour to be amongst them. I’ll be bringing my book. I’ll be bringing my bird sounds. And I can’t wait to see you all there!

Mimicry is incredible! Listen to this stonechat in subsong, taking off magpie, blackbird, meadow pipit, swallow, starling, green sandpiper, pied wagtail, house martin, and raven. This bird is a resident of the Wexford Slobs, hence the wonderful backdrop of many, many geese!

Wow! I’ve just found what appears to be a Favolaschia species in Cobh, Co. Cork. This was only first discovered in Ireland, also in Cork last year! Are there any Irish mycologists on here? www.researchgate.net/profile/Coli...

Take yourself to an Irish coastal marsh at night. Rain pitter-patters softly on the water. Surf gently crashes in the distance. Swans and wigeon graze and call at peace in the blackness. These worlds exist out there and we must protect them.
