Something has to be done about algorithmic feeds. Those feeds get a foothold with every back-to-back video, and I’d be all for limiting Youtube shorts since I just don’t like them. But those feeds influence people of all ages, not just kids. I don’t want to turn anything into a black and white […]

@Migueldeicaza I must be getting old, I liked it as it was. I moved it right back to the middle with the new toolbar customisation options. ✨

Resizable iPhone app windows was also a great surprise, and I’m interpreting it as a prelude to… You guessed it, EXTERNAL DISPLAY SUPPORT FOR IPHON- nah just kidding, it’s for the foldable isn’t it.

I’m on the iPadOS beta! Loving the performance improvements, the persistent menu bar (when it works). Siri is a buggy mess right now, but has potential. I’d love an Agents.md equivalent. Siri app gaining spotlight indexing would be an amazing memory solution. Shortcuts access broken? New […]

iPadOS 2026 Wishlist
With just a few weeks to go before WWDC 2026, here’s my wishlist for iPadOS in 2026! OS-level tabs This feature massively benefits screens with less real-estate to work with. It seems especially suited to iPad. It exists as a macOS feature, but I’ve pulled this out of the grab-bag because I’d like to see Apple go further than the current macOS implementation, by allowing tabs from multiple apps in the same window.

iPad pro tip: Overclock your Dock - disable recent apps and App Library to free up extra spaces on the Dock for apps. Fill up the Dock, then enable both again.

Counterpoint: Coding languages are based on English, and localisation has never caught on to my knowledge. It’s never been an even playing field, and I’m just privileged to be a native English speaker. There’s probably going to be more international competition in the long-term, when the […]

Apple Maps is showing Lebanon as a depopulated place. All village names erased. Compare Lebanon, Syria and Israel. Guess nobody lives there, they will need to send Israeli settlers to make the mountains and coastal resort towns flourish.

@stroughtonsmith I definitely get behind everything you’d like to see. We need some escape hatch from the closed ecosystem, be it compilers or a full-on macOS compatibility sandbox. Overlapping windows didn’t make quite such a difference for those of us who prefer other window managers. The […]

This comes literally the day after I’ve been exploring Fedora, because the only option Apple provides besides iPad is a relic of a laptop. It’s taught me Apple has a stranglehold on powerful hardware, and tablet-laptops are kinda dead to fold-around 2 in 1s. But it was like being a kid again […]

If you’ve ever thought Apple isn’t opinionated on app architecture, look again. App Intents has a type called AppDependencyManager built-in, which promotes injection of dependencies, and they even recommend using it in the main app target, setting it up in your App’s init. Buttons and Toggle can […]

For any other tech, this would be absurd. Does your calculator do your maths for you? Does your keyboard write for you? Not generally. You do maths with a calculator, and write with a keyboard. LLMs are deterministic in their probabilistic outputs, and they're not intelligent. At least […]

Stop personifying LLMs. It assigns agency and responsibility to a tool, and we all know you can't blame (or credit!) the tools. My LLM wrote this code, and then committed it. ↓ I wrote this code and committed it using an LLM. Getting this language wrong skews our relationship with our tools […]

Running a desktop OS on a phone chip… It’s marketing and cost-savings. Running a desktop OS on a phone… That’s a game-changer, and one that’s happening on the Android/Linux side. I hope the Neo is a prelude, not the main act.

@nileane I’ve recently concluded for all I don’t much like the LLM situation, or maybe specifically because I don’t like it, I need to educate myself on them early to face the future on my own terms. I want to avoid the subscriptions for stolen data. Give a tool any responsibility, and you get […]

So, given: • Local LLM with hardware to power it. • Manual confirmation for any IO tasks by the LLM. • Trustworthy code-based tools. • Direct tool output in the UI, no LLM filter. I think that’s my line. The line where I can actually get really really excited about this tech.

Meanwhile Apple are doing amazingly on the chips front. I’ve been playing with some local LLMs for tool use, and they’re reaching a threshold where they can use and even build tools competently enough to be useful, entirely offline. If these can run locally and build reliable automations in […]

I’m an LLM sceptic. LLMs controlling the computer is a security nightmare, misinformation is to be avoided. Most modern agent clients build in some level of security, turning repetitive input tasks into a series of outputs & permissions dialogs. Permission dialogs suck, but output review is […]

The MacBook Neo looks great. Fun colours, low price. It’s objectively better in every way than my M1 MacBook Air. But the non-touch, non-convertible laptop is a dated form factor - it will always feel crippled in basic HCI terms vs an iPad. I could use it for Xcode, but I’m going to have a […]

@matt I’d love to see a breakdown of the differences of Liquid Glass on iPadOS and macOS. Superficially they look the same (iPadOS is just macOS ‘lite’ now right?) but macOS seems to have had a much worse reception, with various people saying they ‘like it more’ on iPadOS. The “Liquid Glass” mode has been replaced by “Immersive”, which was going to be THE new design, but I did end up trying to bring back Balanced and Arclike relatively last minute. It was a bit of a hacky job, and Arclike especially will get more consideration going forward. With these new modes […]

Silly me, thinking it was broken at larger text sizes. Apple can be very consistent when they want to be, and would never let things break only when accessibility is enabled.
The “larger text” page’s explanation text gets cut off when the Settings sidebar is shown.
