9/ Maternal deaths are not inevitable. Most are preventable with timely, quality care and equitable health systems.

Partners In Health @pih.org · 02/06/2026
8/ That's why we invest in the staff, stuff, space, and systems needed for safe, dignified maternal health care. We work with ministries of health to strengthen facilities, train providers, and deliver the full continuum of maternal health services.

7/ In high-income countries, nearly all births are attended by a trained doctor, nurse, or midwife. In low-income countries, it’s only 73 percent. Every birth attended by a trained professional is a chance to prevent death and complications.

Partners In Health @pih.org · 02/06/2026
5/ To protect their health, women need access to: - Skilled health professionals during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum - Contraception and safe abortion services - Timely treatment for complications such as bleeding, infection, or pre-eclampsia
110
Partners In Health @pih.org · 02/06/2026

3/ Between 2000 and 2023, global maternal mortality dropped by about 40 percent, showing progress. But not for everyone. Over 90 percent of maternal deaths still occur in low- and lower-middle-income countries, highlighting inequalities in health care.
110
Partners In Health @pih.org · 02/06/2026
2/ On average in 2023, over 700 women died from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth per day. That is nearly one maternal death every two minutes—deaths that could be avoided with the right care.
