Incredible from Cameroon, who didn't initially even qualify for the tournament and were only admitted when it expanded from 12 to 16 teams. Very excited to see both these teams in the World Cup next year. www.nytimes.com/athletic/751...

So it seems that France won't, in fact, become the first country to ban social media for the under 15s. The Constitutional Council ruled that the ban "constitutes an infringement that is neither appropriate, necessary, nor proportionate" to the freedom of expression and communication for under 15s.

Wrote these words just last night. (The Feminism Factory is forthcoming in 2027 etc etc)
You do not need to have been paying a great deal of attention in the reading of this book to have worked out that the bad guys in many of the righteous feminist struggles for justice profiled are usually the football federations, whether their representatives are assaulting players or simply withholding resources from them on the basis of their gender. So do we keep fighting to change these institutions from within or do we create new structures that allow women footballers to flourish? Football’s highest governing body, FIFA, is losing credibility by the day in its constant pandering to climate criminals, oligarchs and human rights abusers. It is also responsible for the careers and visibility of the majority of the elite players of the world game. Should feminists work to reform it or replace it?

As Mary Beard writes in Women and Power, The Odyssey provides us with Western literature's "first recorded example of a man telling a woman to 'shut up'." How apt, then, to see so many men rubbishing a woman who translated The Odyssey on the basis that her views on the film are somehow invalid.

Wilson's review is spot on for the bits of The Odyssey I saw, though I must admit I left the cinema early (I am too pregnant to sit in an uncomfortable chair for three hours watching something I am not enjoying). Nolan sucked all of the trickery and jest out of the cyclops scene and I was done.

This is a really sharp piece on the state of the media from a journalist and former Observer colleague who has left full-time news writing to become, of all things, a clown. theshinythings.substack.com/p/i-dont-lov...
We are wildly outnumbered by PRs, reputation management companies, murky thinktanks and pressure groups and state-sponsored disinformation campaigns, all driven into our hands and heads by social media algorithms pushing fear and hatred. We are bullied into unpicking divisive theories of humanity and no matter how well we respond it seems to give them intellectual foundations.

In the streets, interviewees come pre-loaded with disinformation and falsehoods that they can rattle off at such speed that it is impossible to fact check them in real time and their quotes are unusable because of the column inches required to correct them.

We should not be fooled into thinking this happened quickly. Social media has been a violent accelerant, but much of the British press built the fire willingly and as we are increasingly offered the preposterous idea that white nationalism will solve our problems we can see where the seeds were planted.

Very pleased that Desire Paths was Highly Commended at the National Biography Awards. Judges called it "a brilliant and thoroughly engaging debut memoir." www.sl.nsw.gov.au/awards/natio...
Desire Paths follows journalist Megan Clement as she races to be with her dying father on the other side of the world just as borders are closing in 2020. Trapped in hotel quarantine, Clement reflects on the paths we forge from force of will and the well-worn paths that take us home.

This is a powerful memoir on grief, belonging, borders and familial love. Both deeply personal and wide-ranging, the book raises fascinating questions about home, migration and the political state of the world, with Clement hitting her stride in her original reflections on family and national character. A brilliant and thoroughly engaging debut memoir. Cover of the memoir DESIRE PATHS by Megan Clement featuring an Australian park at sunset.
