A big health policy day, the launch of the Government’s welcome 10 year health plan. The plan rightly emphasises empowering patients, so I chose to ask about how that applies in #mentalhealth. We need to improve #NHS MH access - and data about waiting times to help get them down.

3 years ago Putin launched a barbaric invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine’s frontline is the frontline of freedom. It was an honour to mark the anniversary with Ukrainian refugees who were welcomed to Sunderland with the support of the Salvation Army. I’m proud of the UK’s leadership on Ukraine.

I asked Australian doctors specifically about palliative care - and any impact introduction of AD has had on that. Their responses clear: palliative care in no way harmed by introduction of AD and often strengthened and enhanced as a result of focus on choice at end of life.

Another valuable morning at Assisted Dying (AD) Bill committtee. AD has been in place in Australia since 2019, important we learn from their experience. Dr Clare Fellingham clear that our proposed law has tight limited eligibility for the terminally ill in line with theirs.

I started my NHS career during the last Labour Government’s 10-year NHS plan which still sits in my bookcase. It falls again to Labour to tackle unacceptably long NHS waits - I look forward to the new NHS plan outlining further steps to tackle progress tackling waits in all sectors of the NHS.
