"With governments entirely reliant on Equifax to administer life-saving benefits to millions of low-income Americans, steep price hikes quickly followed. The NYT uncovered that in many places, the toll paid to Equifax doubled, then tripled, and more than quadrupled in only a few years."
A chart showing that in 2016, Equifax charged $5.53 per verification, and that number tripled to $15 per verification by 2025.

LPE Blog vs. NYT, Round 1, FIGHT: lpeproject.org/blog/the-ant...
From the NYT: "Before the Trump presidency, there was broad consensus that the 14th Amendment established birthright citizenship for children born in the United States."From the LPE Blog: Indeed, the order is so transparently lawless that to analyze its constitutionality at all is to risk conveying the impression of a serious legal debate. So, for the record: there is none. Trump may as have well signed an executive order that grants Texas 40 Senators. When the Supreme Court eventually weighs in on the order, we will not learn whether it is constitutional. We will learn whether the Supreme Court is prepared to follow the Constitution.

At @pppaction.bsky.social, @jennyhunter.bsky.social has a new report laying out how the Supreme Court helped Trump win and what we can do about it. peoplesparityaction.org/wp-content/u...
Graphic listing 8 ways the Supreme Court Helped Trump Win: (1) Shielded Trump from prosecution; (2) Blocked states from removing Trump from the ballet; (3) Allowed billionaires and oligarchs to buy the presidency; (4) Gutted voting rights act and permitted voter suppression, (5) greenlit political and racial gerrymandering; (6) blocked or limited Biden's signature policy accomplishments; (7) Attached workers' ability to form strong unions; (8) limited American's imagination as to what kind of world is possible.

Yes! It's a textbook case of the kind of response that @ajbauer.bsky.social recently warned about. Unfortunately, the self-described policy wonks can't help themselves! lpeproject.org/blog/define-...
Similarly, rather than studying the world as it is in an empirical sense, identifying problems, and proposing solutions, Trumpism starts with “solutions” consistent with its racist and xenophobic worldview—extrapolated from slogans like “Make America Great Again,” “Build the Wall,” “Drain the Swamp”—and then goes in search of “real” problems to justify their implementation.

The press and Democratic Party have, unfortunately, gamely played along—denouncing Trumpism’s false statements of fact but largely conceding the underlying “problems” as worthy policy debates. For example, outlets like the Atlantic and New York Times insist on pretending that gender nonconformity among children is a serious “problem” worthy of national political debate when less than 0.1 percent of U.S. minors take gender-affirming medication.

The same goes for immigration. Mainstream newspapers and cable outlets have largely narrated as a “crisis” the Biden administration’s mismanagement of a dysfunctional asylum process—dysfunction, worth noting, that was deliberately sown by Republican governors to justify their racist anti-migrant policies. This crisis framing has been readily adopted by “Blue State” Democrats like New York City mayor Eric Adams and New York governor Kathy Hochul to obfuscate their own mismanagement of the issue.

Are landlords petty tyrants??? Don't sleep on today's post, which provides a useful overview (linking to tons of research) of the various powers and prerogatives that landlords possess: everything the power to influence policy to the power to insert themselves in their tenant’s personal lives.
Beyond these intrusions into tenants’ personal lives, landlords’ duty to maintain and repair the units in which tenants live, which is often seen as a benefit of renting, generally creates conditions of dependence. The duty for maintenance is chronically ill-enforced. Consequently, tenants are often stuck dealing with conditions of neglect and disrepair with little means for redress. Tenants end up with little control over the conditions of their living space, subject to hazardous conditions at home, and at the mercy of delinquent owners.
