Annual Labour conferences have often been a stage for clashes between ordinary members and more right-wing MPs. The first conference under Andy Burnham struck a more consensual note, but the new prime minister’s progressive vibe remains ill-defined.

Andy Burnham’s Labour Allows the Left to Breathe, a Little
The first Labour conference under new leader Andy Burnham saw a rhetorical turn away from his predecessor’s austerian and managerial approach. Burnham has regained trade unions’ confidence, but his real policy shifts have been cautious.

Higher interest rates tend to stop or slow inflation by curtailing employment, pushing wages down, and thereby reducing inflation. But it is hard to blame wages for the current inflation.

Interest Rate Increases Are About Disciplining Labor
The major factors bringing about the current, continuing inflation are unlikely to be much affected by the Fed’s recent interest rate increases. But those increases weaken labor’s bargaining power, so Washington welcomes them anyway.
