An Post, Revenue and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission have also warned that scammers will look to exploit confusion around the new customs rules by sending fake texts or emails asking people to pay customs charges. People should be on high alert
Text saying: 'Which countries are affected? The rules apply to goods arriving from outside the EU, including Britain, China and the US.

Goods being shipped from within Ireland (including Northern Ireland) or another EU country will be exempt, regardless of where they were made.'

There's a cut-out image of a parcel sitting on a welcome matText saying: 'How can I tell if I’ll be charged when ordering?Just because a website uses an Irish ‘.ie’ address or displays prices in euro, that does not necessarily mean the goods are coming from Ireland or another EU country.

Check the retailer’s T&Cs or delivery information to see where goods will be dispatched from.'

There's a cut-out image of someone browsing an online retailer's site on their smartphoneText saying: Will every online retailer charge me in the same way? No. Some retailers will include the customs duty at the online checkout, so you’ll pay everything before your order is shipped.

Others may not collect the charge in advance. In those cases, you could be contacted by the postal service or courier after your parcel arrives in Ireland.
Text reading: 'What happens if I return something? Under the new rules, customs duty paid on returned goods generally will not be refunded unless the item is faulty.' There is a picture of a worker scanning a parcel's barcode with a hand-held scanner

Until now, many lower-value purchases could enter the EU without customs duty. But under the new rules, a €3 customs duty will apply to each individual item
Text saying: 'What’s changing? From July 1st, the EU is removing the customs duty exemption on goods worth €150 or less arriving from outside the bloc.' There's a pic of parcels on conveyor beltsText saying: 'What’s changing? Under the new rules, a €3 customs duty will apply to each individual item in a parcel arriving from outside the EU.' There's a cutout pic of a stack of cardboard boxesText saying: 'What does ‘per item’ actually mean? The charge applies to each individual item in your parcel, not the parcel itself.' Then there's an inset example box that says: 'If you order a pen, a notebook and a keyring, you would have to pay €9.

But if you buy three identical pens, they are treated as one item, and you would pay €3.'
