I will continue to raise the needs of St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire residents at every opportunity, and with every Government department, during this period of development.

Today I pressed the Transport Secretary to properly invest in sustainable bus, cycle and pedestrian transport links to the proposed new stations, as well as pushing her to consider the potential for an EWR station to the east of St Neots in order to connect our town in with the Government's plans.

But for the railway to really fulfil its potential, these stations must be genuinely accessible to residents - and not just by car.

Proposed East West Rail (EWR) stations at Tempsford and Cambourne will go some way to help residents access opportunity at the Universal Resort in Bedfordshire, in the proposed new town at Tempsford, and beyond into Milton Keynes and Oxfordshire.

Residents of St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire must be able to benefit from the huge opportunity that upcoming housing and tourism development in Bedfordshire will bring to our area.

Alongside my Liberal Democrat colleagues, I will be continuing to press for genuinely workable guidance that ensures dignity, safety and inclusion for everyone.

Causing people to worry about whether they can safely access public facilities, challenging anyone who doesn't appear 'female' enough, and leaving businesses and providers open to legal risk is not appropriate.

EHRC guidance: I know this last week has been unsettling for the trans community and their loved ones. After months of delay, confusion and leaks to the press, the newly published guidance on single-sex spaces is disappointing.

I am pleased that my team and I have had success securing reinstatement of multiple licences, and continue to push for action on others. Please do contact me if you are impacted by this and need support.

DVLA delays: Residents frequently get in touch with me about long delays to reissuing licences following medical issues, which are significantly impacting their day-to-day independence and job prospects.

The Government is well aware that these are widespread issues and has committed to restoring standard service levels by the end of June - yet the progress we have seen so far seems minimal. If you are having issues accessing your pension, please contact me and my team will look to support you.

In my inbox last week...👇 Civil Service Pension Scheme (CSPS): Over the last few months, my team and I have been dealing with a high volume of messages from people unable to access lump sum payments and ongoing pension income since administration of CSPS was transferred to Capita.

The Network has just published a report exploring how making the active choice to work with nature and natural processes can protect against growing economic and climate pressures and secure the future of the UK's food production.

It's always a pleasure to see Martin Lines, constituent and farmer, who is often in Westminster promoting the work of the Nature Friendly Farming Network (NFFN).

At my regular meeting with the East of England Director at the Department for Education last week, I pressed for assurances that the right infrastructure - particularly further education and SEND provision - would be available in the area.

In Northstowe, it was great to visit the Unity Centre, which officially opened at the end of March and has already become a huge asset to the town - both for its flexible and accessible community spaces, and for the building's ambitious, sustainability-focused design.

At Longsands, I met the school's newly appointed Principal and saw updated plans for the refurbishment of the sixth form building, which will hopefully make a big difference for current and prospective students.

Before schools broke up for half term, I held my regular visits to both Ernulf and Longsands, and met with Astrea Academy Trust leadership. At Ernulf, I was pleased to hear that Year 11s are engaging well with after school GCSE revision sessions, and that outcomes are on their way to improving.

On Huntingdonshire District Council the we have overtaken the Conservatives to become the largest party on the council. We won 20 seats, and the Conservatives now sit on 15. Reform UK won 10 seats, Independent candidates won 4, the Green Party won 2 seats and the Labour Party won one.

Within St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire, we made 10 gains and held 14 seats. More widely, the Liberal Democrats held control of South Cambridgeshire District Council, winning 43 seats. The Conservatives won the remaining two.

The dust is now beginning to settle on a very busy election period. Across the country, we Liberal Democrats are on a record winning streak as voters reject the politics of hatred and division in favour of positive change and genuine community action.

We must do more to tackle extremism and hatred; through calling out antisemitism wherever we see it, and through a national Government action plan to eradicate it.

I am grateful to our emergency services for their response and for quickly apprehending the suspect, and to the brave members of the community who intervened.

Yesterday's antisemitic attack in Golders Green was deeply disturbing, and my thoughts are with the victims, their families and to the entire Jewish community.

A government that won't account for its decisions can't be held to them. And a government that can't be held to its decisions will keep making the same mistakes. Letting accountability and explanation slip undermines trust, and the public deserve far better.

On Monday, the Prime Minister stood in the House of Commons for nearly two and a half hours, and said on at least 12 occasions that appointing Peter Mandelson as US Ambassador was an “error of judgment”. Not once in those two hours, however, did he tell us what his error of judgment actually was.

The RRT’s role in the UK is to provide hot food and drinks to the emergency services when they are involved in operations supporting the public – this has included the Grenfell Tower fire; Huntingdon train attack; terrorist attacks in London and many more across the country.

The RRT is a worldwide network of volunteers supporting emergency service workers during disasters and crisis situations, as well as supporting the public through a range of services and initiatives.

Our independent businesses are already fighting to survive rising costs and business rates, they shouldn't have to worry about shoplifting too.

Residents of Fenstanton will know shop owner Amit, pictured with me outside Ash's Shop, and will have experienced the hugely positive impact he has on the community. Hearing that he struggled to get support when he was attacked by shoplifters in his shop is just not good enough.

Cambridgeshire is already one of the lowest-funded police forces in the country because the Government’s funding formula uses out of date population data which is over a decade old. We are being short-changed and I will continue to press this point to the Government.
110
Ian Sollom MP 🔶 @iansollom.bsky.social · 16/04/2026
That means 3 in 4 four shoplifters are walking away with no consequences – the message to every would-be thief is that the odds are in their favour. We need the Govt to fund police resources focused on communities & times this crime is happening, & a criminal justice system that follows through.

Ian Sollom MP 🔶 @iansollom.bsky.social · 16/04/2026
I was appalled to see figures revealed today that show shoplifting in Cambridgeshire has nearly tripled in five years and yet only one in four cases results in a charge.

We understand that getting full compensation to everyone impacted takes time, but transparency and honesty through that process is vital to prevent further harm.

For the Minister to simply brush them off as being on the prioritisation list - when still no one in the cohort has received a single payment to date - is simply not good enough.

Many people in this group are seriously unwell and living with advanced disease, and people are dying while waiting for the support they and their families need.

These people have waited decades for redress, and the sense of helplessness and inequality they are feeling now about having lost out on years of interim support is only causing further harm.

At yesterday's statement on the work of the Infected Blood Compensation Authority, I specifically raised the case of people whose infection was not within the original eligibility criteria for the scheme, and who have consequently not received any interim compensation or support from the Government.
