Across Europe, minorities are increasingly being targeted, scapegoated and used as political tools. When hatred is normalised, it contributes to a wider climate of division and dehumanisation.

This tragedy must not be used to fuel hatred against migrants, foreigners or Muslim communities. We reject any attempt to exploit what happened to divide communities, scapegoat minorities or turn one group against another.

As @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu said, CSD stands for “freedom, dignity, and equality – the fundamental values of the EU. Everyone should be able to live, love and stand up for their rights without fear.” This is what Pride represents. It is also what democracy must protect.

In Izmir, the city governorate issued a blanket ban on all public events that day. Police detained 36 people. One father, watching his child being taken away, shouted to the crowd: "You didn't steal or act dishonestly. You defended your rights. I'm proud of you, my son."

The 24th Istanbul Pride March took place in Kadıköy, on the Asian side of the city for the first time, with marchers moving through different streets in smaller groups, chanting and carrying banners despite police intervention. At least 65 people were detained. All were later released.

LGBTI+ activists in Turkey continue to show courage and determination despite state attacks and restrictions. Police detained 65 activists at #IstanbulPride last Sunday. One day earlier, 36 protestors were detained at #IzmirPride.

They have chosen not to march in the classic Pride format because in Belgrade, that has too often meant thousands of armed officers, a city centre sealed off, and a community made to feel like a threat rather than like citizens. The safety they've found is the safety of standing with others.

The Queer Assembly of Belgrade is a clear example that LGBTIQ+ rights have always been inseparable from all other civil rights, and that queer people will not stand at the back of the fight for justice.

In 2001, the first Pride march in Belgrade was violently attacked by far-right mobs. People were beaten in the streets. The state authorities looked away. Twenty-five years later, queer people in Serbia are back in the streets.
