Together, the three essays highlight how firms' everyday decisions, from choosing suppliers and investing in technology to deciding when to change prices, can have significant effects on the wider economy. #Economics #Macroeconomics #Research #PhD #Inflation #Automation

IIES, Stockholm University @iies.su.se · 02/09/2026
Why does inflation persist? The thesis shows that inflation can remain elevated because firms do not adjust prices immediately when conditions change. Their pricing decisions create inflation dynamics that can last long after the initial shock.

IIES, Stockholm University @iies.su.se · 02/09/2026
Measuring automation is not straightforward. Using detailed Swedish data, Chek finds that conclusions about automation's effects depend heavily on how automation is defined. Looking only at industrial robots may miss important effects from other technologies.

Finding suppliers matters. The thesis shows that easier access to suppliers can boost productivity by helping firms find better and cheaper inputs. But these gains are not evenly distributed: the most productive firms tend to benefit the most, contributing to greater market concentration.

Bottom line: • Too much concentration can slow growth • Firm-level behavior drives big economic outcomes • Inflation persistence can come from how firms set prices 👉 What happens inside firms matters for the whole economy
100
IIES, Stockholm University @iies.su.se · 02/06/2026
Why inflation sticks around Firms don’t change prices instantly—they wait. Some adjust quickly, others delay → creating gradual, persistent inflation Inflation depends partly on its own past because of this staggered behavior.
100
IIES, Stockholm University @iies.su.se · 02/06/2026
A few firms can shape entire sectors Even small differences between firms can create lasting gaps in growth. 👉 Large firms have outsized influence 👉 Market structure alone can explain persistent differences across industries
100
IIES, Stockholm University @iies.su.se · 02/06/2026
Market concentration can drag on growth When a few firms dominate an industry, resources are less likely to move to the most productive firms. Result: • +10pp concentration → −3pp productivity growth • Up to −13pp in more distorted markets

IIES, Stockholm University @iies.su.se · 02/06/2026
Can big firms slow down economic growth, and keep inflation high? In his thesis, Juan Llavador Peralt shows how the behavior of individual firms can shape entire economies. 🧵 www.su.se/english/divi...

Bottom line: Personal experiences influence health decisions, while family background is central to how inequality persists across generations. Jonatan will defend his thesis “Essays on Healthcare Demand and Long-run Inequality” on June 11.

IIES, Stockholm University @iies.su.se · 01/06/2026
Family matters more than group identity What looks like group effects among immigrants often reflects extended family influence, not the norms, expectations, and barriers associated with a family’s country-of-origin group.

Effects of wealth shocks can last for centuries A major wealth confiscation in Sweden in 1680 still affects descendants today: Families lost wealth that persisted across 5 generations

We often misinterpret cause and effect People who experienced unrelated health issues after COVID-19 vaccination were more likely to stop getting further doses.
100
IIES, Stockholm University @iies.su.se · 01/06/2026
Experiences shape health decisions People who had past negative experiences with vaccines and people close to them were much less likely to take COVID-19 vaccines.

IIES, Stockholm University @iies.su.se · 01/06/2026
Why do people make different healthcare decisions? And why do advantages and disadvantages persist across generations? In his thesis @jonatanriberth.bsky.social shows that both personal experiences and family history play a much bigger role than we often think. 🧵 www.su.se/english/divi...

School funding reforms More resources don’t raise average outcomes—but they help disadvantaged students, especially recent immigrants. Bottom line: Policy doesn’t affect everyone equally. Who gains depends on how power (and opportunity) is distributed.

Wind power & local vetoes When municipalities can block wind farms, they protect local residents—but: • Projects become less efficient nationally • Costs shift to other areas • Disadvantaged communities bear more burden A trade-off between local fairness and national efficiency.
