SCOTUS just found a way to strike yet another blow to the VRA. In brief, their move means that, within the 8th circuit, there is no more right for individuals or organizations to sue over violations of Section 208, which among other things protects people with disability.

Make no mistake about what this Republican split really is. As our CEO @laurengw.bsky.social put it: "They're united by one thing – holding on to their own power and silencing 'we the people.' The disagreement between them is one of strategy, not of substance."

Gov. Brian Kemp isn't backing down. In the final months of his last term, he still wants to ram these maps through to silence Black and Brown Georgians. Republicans are now in open disarray, split between Kemp and their own legislative leaders.

On day one of the special session, GOP House and Senate leaders announced they don't want to redraw Georgia's maps after all. They're spooked that a fight over racist maps before the election could cost them their majority in November. Pressure works – but this fight isn't over.

Georgia Republicans are feeling the pressure. Nearly 500 Georgians packed the Capitol to oppose rigged maps. The atmosphere was defiance, hope, and strength in community – neighbors standing together refusing to let this happen quietly.

Today, the tools look different – but the strategy hasn't changed. Instead of literacy tests, it's gerrymandering – manipulating voting district lines on a map that "pack" and "crack" Black communities to dilute their power.

The 15th Amendment forbade banning Black voters outright – so they used race neutral language to do it anyway: poll taxes, literacy tests, and an "understanding clause" that let officials turn away educated Black voters while waving illiterate white ones through.
