While ordinary families struggle to afford the essentials, the super-rich continue to grow their wealth to ever-more obscene figures, propped up by our unfair tax system. I've written to the Chancellor pressing him to follow the Green Party's example and take urgent action to tax wealth fairly.

A fairer voting system can't wait until after the next general election. We need electoral reform now.
WE NEED FAIR VOTING BEFORE THE NEXT ELECTION

ELLIE CHOWNS
MP FOR NORTH HEREFORDSHIRE

"The PM cannot acknowledge the unfairness of a system capable of handing power to a government with a minority of the vote share, and then say the answer is to let that happen exactly once more before he fixes it.

Burnham must act with urgency to immediately jumpstart the National Commission, guarantee timely progress, and ensure its recommendations are delivered in time for a fairer voting system to be in place at the next general election."

Today’s speech from the Chancellor shows Labour offering more of the same. We need real action to tackle extreme wealth inequality in this country and make the super-rich pay their fair share.
Headline reads: “It’s time to tackle extreme wealth inequality.”
Quote from Ellie Chowns, MP for North Herefordshire:
“The Chancellor used his speech today to repeatedly stress a message of new leadership offering new hope, yet when it came to the substance behind the rhetoric, Britain was once again left with more of the same.
“He made no mention of the extraordinary wealth inequality holding our country back, nor did he state any ambitions for fair taxation of wealth.
“A government serious about fixing our economy cannot afford to look the other way while the uber-rich accumulate ever-more wealth and dodge paying their fair share.”

The fact that the entire funding pot for the SFI was allocated within mere hours of applications opening demonstrates the huge ambition of our farmers to invest in sustainable practices - but without proper support from the govt to do so, countless farmers will be left unable to take on this work.
I am writing about the closure of Window 2 of the Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 (SFI26)
and the farmers who have been left without an agreement - despite making genuine efforts to
apply. The window opened yesterday morning, 22nd September, and closed at 15:48, after the
£233 million budget had been committed. The fact that the entire fund was allocated within hours
is striking evidence of the level of demand from farmers for support to adopt and maintain
sustainable, nature- and river-friendly farming practices.
Farmers have contacted me directly. One told me they pressed the application button at around
16:00, only to find the budget had already been exhausted. Another, whose SFI23 agreement
expires in November, encountered a Rural Payments Agency (RPA) functionality problem,
followed RPA advice to re-apply, and ultimately found SFI26 closed before they could secure the
support they had been trying to obtain. A further farmer described confusion over the status of
their different applications within the RPA system. These cases raise immediate questions about
how farmers who made every reasonable effort to apply will be treated. But they also point to a
wider issue - the speed at which the funding was taken up suggests that the problem is not a lack
of willingness among farmers to deliver environmental outcomes, but a lack of sufficient, reliable
public investment to enable them to do so.
I therefore ask that your Department urgently:
1. Provides a remedy for farmers who made genuine and timely attempts to apply but were
unable to secure an agreement - particularly those whose existing environmental
agreements are expiring before the next SFI opportunity.
2. Reviews cases involving technical or administrative problems, including farmers who
followed RPA advice to withdraw, reject, or reapply - and ensure that farmers who lost
access to funding because of such problems have a route to redress.
3. Publishes a clear account of Window 2,…4. Sets out what support is available to farmers with expiring agreements who have been left
without a new agreement - rather than simply asking them to wait for SFI27. Your
Department specifically created an early application mechanism for farmers with eligible
agreements, so I hope you will agree that continuity for these farmers needs to be
addressed quickly.
5. Uses the evidence from SFI26 to set a significantly more ambitious level of funding for
future environmental farming support. The fact that £233 million was committed in less
than six hours should be treated as evidence of substantial unmet demand. I would be
grateful if you could set out how the Government will ensure that farmers who want to
improve soil, protect nature and rivers, build resilience and produce food sustainably have
the resources to do so.
In July, you said that you remain committed to bringing greater stability and predictability to the
SFI, and that your Department will keep the core offer largely stable for the remainder of this
Parliament to help farmers plan ahead - but that stability will only be meaningful if farmers can
also have confidence that sufficient funding will be available to participate.
In North Herefordshire and across the nation, farmers are stepping up to deliver environmental
outcomes for the public, and the response to yesterday’s window shows clearly that many are
willing to do so. As Government policy should meet that ambition, rather than creating a system in
which the available support disappears within hours, I would be grateful for a response on (1)
what urgent action you will take for those affected by Window 2, and (2) what assessment your
Department has made of the level of investment required to meet the evident demand for
sustainable, nature- and river-friendly farming.

Months after the govt announced they were looking into decoupling the price of electricity from gas, we still have no further details or timelines on these plans - all while families across the UK face down surging energy bills. I've written to the SoS for Energy Security and Net Zero for answers.
I am writing to you regarding the urgent need to address the high and inflated cost of electricity,
particularly in light of this week’s announcement that, from October, households already
struggling with the cost of living will face the highest energy costs in three years.
As you are aware, billpayers across the country remain at the mercy of volatile global fossil fuel
markets due to the UK’s marginal pricing system. Under this system gas-fired power stations set
the wholesale price of electricity the majority of the time, even though cheaper renewables
generate a significant and growing share of our energy.
This flawed system has repeatedly resulted in huge spikes to household energy bills and cost the
UK economy billions. Since 2021, £90 billion extra has been spent on gas, with £40 billion in
public money used to cushion soaring household bills (Greenpeace, 2025).
Considering this, the government’s announcement earlier this year that it would look into breaking
the link between gas prices and electricity prices marked a welcome acknowledgment that this
system is broken and needs to change.
However, months have now passed seemingly without any published updates, detailed plans, or
clear timelines on how exactly this is being delivered, let alone when billpayers will feel the
benefits. While the public waits for action, volatile global gas prices are once again pushing bills
up just in time for winter.
I also have concerns that the model of decoupling announced, which relies on electricity
generators voluntarily leaving the market, will not properly break the link and deliver substantially
lower bills. By pursuing a more ambitious model of market decoupling, such as the approach set
out in Greenpeace’s Power Shift proposal or Common Wealth’s fixed price model proposals, the
government would cut average bills by hundreds of pounds, while simultaneously taking real
control over our energy system and accelerating the transition to clean, affo…plans, timelines, and progress to implement the decoupling policy, and whether you are
considering adopting a more thorough model of price decoupling.
I look forward to hearing your response and to seeing swift, decisive action on this critical issue.

Ahead of Parliament's return in one week, I've written to the Foreign Secretary urging him to learn from the mistakes of his predecessors and take action to protect human rights, uphold intl law, and make clear that the UK will no longer be complicit in genocide and other war crimes in Palestine.
Dear Ed,

As you will be aware, we are quickly approaching the return of Parliament following a summer which has ushered forth a new Prime Minister, a largely new Cabinet, and a new position for yourself, as Foreign Secretary. What is yet to be seen is whether we will also see a new and more effective and principled way of responding to the Israeli Government’s grave and ongoing human rights abuses in Palestine. It is vital that the UK Government does not simply condemn breaches of international law, but acts decisively to stop them.

The need for urgent action cannot be overstated; the ongoing genocide has seen more than 1,000 Palestinians in Gaza killed by Israeli forces since the ceasefire came into effect in October 2025. Access to critical humanitarian aid such as food and medical supplies remains heavily restricted, and the displacement of Palestinians has continued as Israeli forces expand further into Gaza beyond the agreed ceasefire boundaries. Illegal Israeli settlement expansion and settler violence in the West Bank also continues to escalate, with the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reporting about 190 attacks a month in the first four months of 2026, alongside the publication of construction tenders for 1,200 homes in the E1 area.

While I recognise your condemnation of the E1 plans and acknowledgement of the destructive threat that settlement expansion poses to peace in the region, it is clear that simply issuing statements of concern is not enough to make the Israeli Government change course.

I therefore urge you to learn from the mistakes of your predecessors and take genuine action to protect the human rights of Palestinians, uphold international law, and make clear that the UK will no longer be complicit in genocide and other war crimes in Palestine. These actions include, but are not limited to:

Ending all arms sales to, and military cooperation with, Israel;

Banning all trade with illegal Israeli settlements in o…There is significant and growing support for these measures across Parliament, including from many MPs within your own party. Indeed, the Prime Minister himself has acknowledged that Labour previously “got it wrong” on Gaza and has said that more needed to be done to ensure Israel adheres to international law; your new position grants you an opportunity to turn that recognition into meaningful action.

I therefore hope that you will act with the urgency that this moment demands. The UK Government must stand firmly for international law, human rights, and the protection of civilians, not for further impunity for those responsible for war crimes.

I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to further discuss the cross-party role Parliament can play in securing justice, accountability, and a lasting peace for Palestinians and Israelis alike.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Ellie Chowns

Given our consistent engagement on the adult social care crisis and willingness to work together to solve it, it's deeply disappointing that the Greens weren't invited to today's cross-party talks. We need all hands on deck to tackle this issue - the Greens remain ready to work cross-party to do so.
Dear Andy,
29 July 2026
I welcome your commitment to addressing the challenge of fixing social care, an issue which has
for too long been neglected and treated as a political football. There are no shortage of reports and
proposals on how to change things; what has been missing for far too long is the political will to
do so. I am therefore glad to see that you have committed to spending political capital on securing
positive change.
I also agree that cross-party working is essential to best face this challenge. Indeed, I have
repeatedly called in Parliament for cross-party talks, and I have represented the Green Party at the
(so far, only two) cross-party meetings convened as part of the Casey Commission’s work, in
September 2025 and May 2026. I expressed my strong desire for more frequent and in-depth
cross-party discussions at that most recent meeting, as well as consistently calling on the
government to show greater political leadership on this issue.
It was therefore disappointing to learn yesterday that only two political parties had been invited to
meet with you today, at very short notice, to discuss social care. I am puzzled as to why you did
not extend an invitation to the Green Party, given our long track record of positive engagement in
this area and our frequent expressions of interest in, and support for, cross-party work on social
care. Failing to extend an invitation to your first cross-party meeting on the topic is, frankly, not
consistent with your stated commitment to working cooperatively across party lines.
I remain very keen to work constructively with you and other cross-party colleagues to find
solutions to the crisis in social care, so that we can meet the needs and uphold the interests of
people who draw on care, their families and other unpaid carers, and all those who work in the
care sector.
I look forward to hearing from you.
