What if we’re creating superbugs without using antibiotics at all? In conflict zones, heavy metals released by warfare may be accelerating antimicrobial resistance through a genetic mechanism called co-selection — where metal- & antibiotic-resistance genes travel together on the same plasmid. 🧪
Graphic showing a bowl filled with colorful capsules and tablets on a dark blue background. Overlaid text reads: “We thought antibiotic resistance was caused by antibiotic misuse. We were only partially right. There’s another driver — and it’s hiding in the soil of conflict zones.”Graphic with a microscopic bacteria background and bold text reading: “What we’ve been told about AMR: For decades, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been blamed on overuse in clinics & farms.” Smaller text adds: “But in conflict zones, we found a different, silent driver.” Icons of a medical symbol and wheat appear next to the words clinics and farms.Infographic titled “Modern Warfare Releases Heavy Metals.” Text explains that bullets, explosives, and munitions contaminate soil with lead (Pb) from bullets and munitions, mercury (Hg) from explosives and propellants, and copper (Cu) from wire coatings and casings. Each metal is shown with a periodic table–style icon. Background image shows soil or gravel. Final text states that these metals are toxic to bacteria, causing bacteria to evolve to survive.
Infographic titled “Here’s the catch…” with a blurred microscopic bacteria background. Text explains that bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii develop metal-resistance genes, and that metal-resistance and antibiotic-resistance genes often sit on the same plasmid (a mobile loop of DNA). It explains that when heavy metals kill weaker bacteria, bacteria carrying these plasmids are selected, dragging antibiotic resistance along. Bold text at the bottom reads: “We create drug-resistant superbugs — without using drugs.”
