We used @earthmover.io's Icechunk, which brings git-like versioning to Zarr. Each VM records its completion as a commit, so the dataset’s own history becomes the record of what’s done. If some region fails, just rerun the pipeline: only the missing regions get reprocessed.

To start, we broke the dataset into spatial regions and processed each one independently on cheap, cloud VMs (Spot Instances), which kept things manageable and made it easy to scale.

We developed two new tools for mapping Zarr data: zarr-layer renders a wide range of datasets with little or no modification. And topozarr adds multiscale overviews and web-friendly chunking to datasets while maintaining projection and resolution. carbonplan.org/blog/zarr-la...

Today we’re launching Open Climate Risk, a fully open option for U.S. building-level climate risk data. It’s unique because it allows you to see not only risk scores, starting with wildfire, but also the complete underlying dataset, methods, and codebase. carbonplan.org/research/cli...

Hydropower offset credits are widely viewed as some of the least credible in the market — but Verra is issuing more and more of them. Nearly 70 percent of all hydropower credits on Verra’s registry were issued after it banned new hydropower projects in 2019.

But DOR is unique: it also produces a pure stream of CO2 that was extracted from the surface ocean and must be securely stored. That means DOR’s ultimate impact depends both on air-sea gas exchange dynamics (like OAE) and CO2 storage integrity (like DAC or BECCS).

Like OAE, DOR relies on the ocean’s natural ability to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. In fact, the spatial and temporal patterns of ocean CO2 reuptake across these two approaches are essentially identical.

When you extract CO2 from the ocean, how much carbon do you end up removing from the atmosphere? We worked with @cworthy.bsky.social to build a new map tool that helps answer that question — showing how direct ocean removal (DOR) performs across different ocean regions and seasons.

CDR research is spread across multiple disciplines. Some work doesn’t get printed publicly at all. We talked to @rosskenyon.bsky.social at Reversing Climate Change podcast on why open science is so important for a field like CDR and the role @cdrxiv.org could play.🧪 open.spotify.com/episode/75fD...

Want to know how fossil fuel companies use carbon offsets to claim they’re fighting climate change? We've updated OffsetsDB — our offsets database — to allow you to search by carbon credit user. Search "Shell" and see what offsets they're using and when. (1/4) carbonplan.org/research/off...

Rather than a continued debate about how to answer the question of “what counts as CDR?” once and for all, we suggest the four questions that we think are more interesting and more important. (4/5)

What distinguishes CDR — and justifies the significant investment it requires — is the unique role it could play in a net-zero future. But project-level carbon accounting doesn’t necessarily tell us whether a project is likely to contribute to that future. (2/5)

Our latest research estimates that almost 40 percent of California’s forest offset buffer pool has been lost to wildfire. That’s roughly twice as many credits than have been set aside to address wildfire risks for the next 100 years. (1/4) 🧪https://doi.org/10.1111/gcb.17599
A bar chart shows total buffer pool credits from the California forest offsets program (34.7M), the amount of buffer pool credits originally set aside to cover fire risk (6.8M), the official count of buffer pool credits lost to fires (10.7M), and the amount of fire losses after estimates of 2024 losses are factored in (13.6M).

Not all ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) deployments will work the same because not all parts of the ocean work the same. We built a new interactive mapping tool using data from @cworthy.bsky.social to show how OAE leads to different amounts of carbon removal based on where and when it’s deployed.

Models broadly agree that climate change is affecting risks. But when private risk analysis companies assess danger for individual addresses, the results can vary substantially. Consumers need to know that any one company’s assessment doesn’t represent a singular truth. (1/8)

California's cap and trade program depends on forest offsets, but the forests are burning. The program’s carbon insurance program suffered losses for the second quarter in a row. And there’s more big losses that haven’t been officially counted yet. carbonplan.org/blog/carb-bu...

Corn ethanol carbon capture and storage projects are being marketed as carbon removal. The problem is, they’re not. But it's easy to be fooled if your accounting time frame is too narrow. carbonplan.org/research/eth...
