Action on illegal Israeli settlements is long overdue. It must now be robust and enforceable. My full response to the Foreign Secretary’s statement in Parliament this week 👇

A ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements is long overdue. It must cover goods, services and finance. I’ve written to the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary urging them to turn condemnation into action to protect the prospect of a two-state solution.

With elections coming in Israel and Palestine, the UK must stand with those in both communities who want to see peace, security and justice through a two-state solution. I have asked Ed Miliband to act against the extremists who want to destroy that goal.

Warm words on Gaza and the West Bank are welcome. But as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham must match them with urgent action - before the prospect of two states, Israel and Palestine, disappears altogether.

Proscribing the IRGC is long overdue. @maxwilkinson.bsky.social and I have written to the Home and Foreign Secretaries demanding swift, coordinated action to ensure its terrorist designation is properly enforced and backed by a coherent sanctions regime.

I’ve been told the Government is using the “nationally important and urgent” planning route for asylum accommodation at MOD Bicester. Yet I have written confirmation the MOD was notified of these plans last November. If ministers knew then, why is it urgent now? I’ll raise this in the House today.

Late last night, the Government announced plans to house asylum seekers at MOD Bicester. MOD Bicester is the wrong site for this facility and the Government must not press ahead. Residents deserve urgent answers on numbers, planning, consultation, local services, cost, security and safeguarding.

The documents I have published show why PFAS contamination at RAF Upper Heyford and Heyford Park must be treated with urgency. Residents need rapid, regular testing, full transparency and clear answers from Government and public bodies about what contamination exists and what is being done about it

Ten years on, Brexit has failed. It has made Britain poorer, weaker and less secure. The Conservatives and Farage broke our relationship with Europe. Labour are too timid to fix it. The Liberal Democrats are being honest about the way forward: rebuild trust, grow our economy and keep Britain safe.

Britain’s economy is being held back by low growth and small businesses are paying the price. That’s why the @libdems.org.uk are pushing for a bold new partnership with Europe to cut red tape, back SMEs and grow our economy.

The Labour Govt has stripped Cherwell of planning powers and handed decisions to Whitehall. I want more homes built, but growth without infrastructure is chaos. Ministers should fix failures holding back jobs + homes, not blame local communities & their representatives. I’ve written to ask why.

A two-state solution cannot survive while illegal settlements keep expanding. The UK should cut off the finance enabling settler activity and help ensure free and fair Palestinian elections in 2027.

Healthwatch does vital work in Oxfordshire, giving patients a voice and holding NHS services to account. I pressed the Health Secretary to guarantee that local independence will not be weakened as the Government brings patient scrutiny closer to Ministers.

The UK was right to recognise the State of Palestine. But recognition means little unless Ministers protect the territorial basis of that state. With E1 tenders opening on 1 June, I’ve urged the Foreign Secretary to make clear UK firms must not aid illegal settlement expansion.

At PMQs today, I pressed the Prime Minister on PFAS contamination affecting our constituency. He agreed that the Health Secretary and Environment Secretary should meet with me. This matters. Residents deserve joined-up action, clear answers and accountability from Government.

Liberal Democrats will push a vote on the Customs Union this evening in Parliament. Wes Streeting has previously thrown his support behind joining the Customs Union. The question is: what will Wes do?

Liberal Democrats will push hard to make this bill bolder. The question is no longer whether Britain should rebuild its European relationship. The case for growth, jobs and security is compelling. The only question left is whether this government has the courage to catch up.

Calum Miller @calummillerld.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
The European Partnership Bill is the perfect self-portrait of this Prime Minister: cautious to paralysis, modest where the moment demands ambition. No customs union. No single market. Starmer cannot pick a fight he might lose. It is the same choice that has defined his government and may end it. 🧵

The King’s Speech should have shown the Government had listened. Instead, it was a missed opportunity. Across Bicester and Woodstock, people face rising bills, stretched councils, housing without the infrastructure to match and no serious plan for social care. Britain needs bold change.

I have written to CDC to ask: - whether environmental screening and assessments done as part of the Heyford Park proposal covered PFAS risks - what remediation checks were made for past developments - whether it has enough information to decide on current planning applications

Calum Miller @calummillerld.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
I have written to the DfE to ask: - whether enviro, soil or air quality testing has been done at Heyford Park School - whether risks to pupils & staff from construction at Heyford Park has been assessed - what guidance exists for schools near known / suspected PFAS contamination

Calum Miller @calummillerld.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
I have written to the MOD to ask: - whether the USAF shared environmental assessments or made remediation commitments when it handed back the base in 1994 - whether the MOD assessed the site from 1994-97 before sale - for records on historic use of firefighting foams there.

Social care is already under severe pressure. Families are waiting too long, providers are struggling to recruit and care workers are not being properly valued. The Government needs to get to grips with this crisis and bring forward a serious plan for social care.

James MacCleary and I, with many of our fellow Lib Dem MPs, have called on Govt to stop letting US planes use UK bases if Trump restarts the war and targets civilian infrastructure. Our Govt must also hold Iran's leaders to account - and stop blocking proscription of the IRGC.

Recognising the state of Palestine was right. But it cannot be the end of the story. Illegal settlements are destroying the prospect of a two-state solution. I pressed the Foreign Secretary to ban settlement goods and stop UK firms, banks and individuals enabling them outright.

If senior officials were being lent on behind ministers’ backs, that is deeply concerning. And if civil servants are then left to carry the can, that only risks further damaging trust. Serious questions to answer here about process, accountability & culture in Government.

I have written to the Prime Minister with Liberal Democrat colleagues to urge him to withdraw or severely limit US access to UK air bases. If Trump is threatening attacks on civilian targets in Iran, Britain cannot allow our bases to be used to commit war crimes.

Getting around is becoming unaffordable and families are paying the price. Trump’s war in Iran is pushing up fuel costs. While the Tories & Reform cheer on the chaos, the Lib Dems are calling for emergency action: cut fuel duty by 10p, cap bus fares at £1 and cut rail fares by 10%.

@monicaharding.bsky.social and I have written to the Foreign Secretary as the crisis across the Middle East worsens. The Government must secure a multilaterally-backed, negotiated end to the war in Iran, and work to protect lives and rights across Lebanon, the West Bank, and Gaza.

Botley West’s delay until September raises serious questions. If Ministers still need more information from the developer after all this time, local people are entitled to ask why the application was delayed rather than refused. I have written to demand answers.
021
Calum Miller @calummillerld.bsky.social · 26/03/2026
Today’s Botley West delay speaks volumes. Ministers have kicked the decision down the road because they still need more info from the developer and more time for others to consider it. After a process this long, that is a damning reflection on the quality of the application. 1/2

Family court delays are leaving families thousands of £ out of pocket, with no route to recover those costs when hearings are pulled at the last minute. I pressed the minister to explain what the Govt is doing to tackle these delays & the financial strain they place on families.

The decision to end the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme has created real uncertainty for churches and faith buildings, many of which rely on local donations for essential repairs. Ministers must now make clear how they will be supported if this VAT relief ends.

No surprise to see Trump totally out of touch with the impact his reckless war will have on UK households. But he isn’t seeking election here. Badenoch and Farage should hang their heads in shame for their boot-licking unconditional support for Trump’s unlimited war.

The last thing the UK needs just now is Tony Blair’s advice on whether to trust a US President about a Middle East war. We know how that White House movie ended.

“People used to say that the US was the world’s policeman. Some people will be wondering today whether Donald Trump is now behaving like the world’s hit man.” My comments on LBC this morning, urging the Government not to let the UK get drawn into this illegal, unilateral war.

Southill Solar gets it right: work with locals, deliver local benefit. Botley West is vast, with weak engagement and thin benefit. The Planning Inspectorate called missing info “very disappointing”. With the Secretary of State now deciding, these concerns must be weighed.

Last week, I attended Kinship’s reception in Parliament to hear directly from kinship carers about the vital role they play, and the gaps in support they still face. The Government’s parental leave review must finally address paid kinship care leave. #KinshipCarers #ValueOurLove

I support solar and the need to move fast on clean energy. But Botley West is a test of whether communities are genuinely heard. Serious questions on transparency, delivery and community benefit still have no answers. That is not good enough.

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day. We remember the six million Jewish people murdered in the Holocaust, an atrocity born of hatred and dehumanisation. We recommit to standing against antisemitism and all forms of hatred.

Waste crime is out of control and the Environment Agency is under-resourced. I welcomed confirmation in Parliament that organised illegal dumping will fall under the new National Police Service. This is serious crime and it must be treated that way.

Bicester is growing fast, but young people are being left behind. A former youth arts centre sits largely unused, despite being publicly owned. I asked Ministers today to back places like Bicester with youth funding, where a low-cost solution could make a real difference.

The UK Government needs to spell out to Trump and his lawless Cabinet that we will abide by international law, even if they won’t. @jamesmaccleary.bsky.social and I have asked Ministers to make clear that no UK bases would be used in an illegal attack by the US on Greenland.
