Today in @NEJM AI : Chris Mansi and I lay out our vision for redesigning clinical workflows with Generative AI. We build on our decade of work across 1,800 hospitals and use our chart summarization tool (Viz Assist) as one illustrative example for a path forward. ai.nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…

Grateful for the opportunity to testify today to the US Congress on a path forward for safe adoption of AI in healthcare. The potential upside is enormous, but we need the right safeguards and processes to capture the upside efficiently without unforced errors.

Has there been a more pressing time to commit to robust evidence to guide health policy? Grateful to spend the evening celebrating our CHOP fellows who spend two years with us learning rigorous analytic approaches to inform how we better deliver care. #gratitude #healthpolicy

Walking up two flights if stairs is a common, low tech tool for surgeons to risk-stratify patients. But what if architects have been designing for the exact question all along? I explain the history of stairs, skyscrapers and your health, here: www.linkedin.com/pulse/stairc...

I’m not part of many clubs - but the ‘I didn’t match into residency’ is my favorite one. There was a hidden gift in the prelim -> repeat intern year again cycle. Kindness goes a long way... I still remember who was kind to me my prelim year and pay it forward #match2025

Many thanks to those of you who not only read the 5th edition of the Visual Abstract Primer, but also found some typos! Here it is again, updated, (hopefully) less typos, and links to videos and templates: www.surgeryredesign.com/resources #MedEd #MedSky #SurgSky

4. Art's Principles amzn.to/3FCZRQs Arthur (Art) Gensler built a world class architecture firm and kept track of his pearls a long the way. There is a great chapter about "boomerangs" and how to handle your top talent always being recruited from competitors.

3. Health Design Thinking amzn.to/43GpY2X I often have someone in medicine me, "I love design, but I don't know how it fits into medicine." If thats you, this would will help a lot. It's full of great examples where design can elevate processes, products and delivery.

🧵/ I'm often asked about book recommendations. Here is a running list: 1. Clinical Scenarios in Surgery (3rd Edition): amzn.to/3XQu6cZ I used this for my oral and written prep. Because each section is quite short (usually 2-4 pages), I also give it the medical students rotating with us. #MedEd

5/ The #VisualAbstract has also gone beyond just research article dissemination, and I end with a nudge to hopefully encourage it as a tool to more directly impact patient care. Full download of the PDF and templates here: www.SurgeryRedesign.com/resources

Today in @jama.com , @codymullens.bsky.social & team find it is increasingly harder for Medicare rural beneficiaries to get common operations done. In 2020, 44% of rural Medicare recipients had to travel >60min for care, up from 37% in 2010. x.com/JAMA_current...

2/ The within star variation is really underscored in the supplement. Figure below shows 3 hospitals (orange dots) in the same metropolitan area, but the 2-star hospital actually has the best outcome. This phenomena recurs is metropolitan areas across the US limiting the value of star rating.

1/ Do CMS star ratings track with surgical outcomes? On average, each start rating higher tracks with overall average lower mortality & complications. The catch? There's just as much variation within each star rating as across them. #SurgSky #MedSky #HealthPolicy jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Working at the interface of architecture and health, I get a lot of questions about how we can design and plan better for health. Among the most common: 1. How do we (hospitals) find the right architect? 2. Should architecture firms hire clinicians? My replies are here: www.withStudioAMI.com
