That could certainly be a reason there is no federal wealth tax, but I think the reason for the absence of a state wealth tax is that it would be a fiscal disaster if the states don't act in concert - which they won't.

I agree that taxes enable the State to provide safer communities and a higher standard of living across the board. It's worth noting that the last period of 'American greatness' was when marginal income tax rates for high earners were around 60%.
