"the price of computer memory has tripled just because a bunch of memory that hasn't yet been manufactured has been pre-ordered so it can be used in GPUs that aren't yet installed in data centers that haven't been built yet so the companies can earn profits that won't happen"

"A completely unqualified, inexperienced hack. But she has great hair. Did she have to let Trump grab her by the pussy to get the nomination?" What about this is directed at trump? I just think the way we talk about current events is important, And frankly I disagree that it's a losing battle

You see that big purple chunk pre-2011? Even if Germany built no new nuclear reactors after fukushima, and had just kept what it had, that would generate as much energy as Germany gets from burning coal today. Here's the full graph btw, you'll see that for decades nuclear was a clean power supply
100 1
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 08/09/2025
New reactors are certainly less competitive than other energy offerings like wind and solar, but old reactors that haven't reached expiration are very cheap to operate
200 2
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 08/09/2025
All countries subsidize there energy sectors as it's a strategic way to gain energy independence, but even then Germany spends $10 billion more than France does

Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 06/09/2025
The "right thing" has resulted in expensive energy and dependence on Russian oil. Every day you can go and look at the difference between the countries that kept nuclear, and those that got rid of it. Germany is behind on energy because of this app.electricitymaps.com/map/72h/hourly

The better time to decommission nuclear would've been when they were set to expire, they are in fact losing out on money that could've been created from keeping these plants alive. Renewables being expensive at the time is all the more reason why the CDU shouldn't have folded to public pressure
100 1
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 06/09/2025
But nuclear is still cheaper than coal, so why would Germany phase out nuclear if they then increased the burning of coal for energy?
210 2
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 06/09/2025
Nuclear is only more expensive for NEW projects, maintaining older reactors with pre-existing infrastructure is very economical. And irregardless of renewables, there's a real discussion to be had about the effects of decommissioning nuclear. France's energy is half the cost for a reason
100 1
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
You brought up wanting to phase out coal, I'm saying that phasing out nuclear does the opposite of phasing out coal. This happens from an increase in the price of energy, which therefore creates an incentive for people to burn coal.
100 1
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
I'm of the opinion that decommissioning nuclear energy and phasing out coal are two opposing ideas. When you phase out nuclear, you increase the demand for energy relative to supply, increasing to incentive for burning coal. If you want to call me a liar again, tell me what it is I'm lying about

Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
You're attacking me, not my argument
100 1
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
That's not what I'm saying. After Germany decommissioned nuclear, they started burning more coal to make up for the energy deficit, which is both more expensive and more deadly. Any situation where you find yourself decommissioning nuclear to burn coal is absurd

There's been a lot of new work in the area of recycling and vitrification, where they contain it in glass. Storage and containment really aren't as big of issues as made out to be. Considering nuclear is the least deadly form of energy, I think it's worth the trade off

If you think of the union of the ranges of these two sets of functions, one spans all of R and the other only spans {0} in the codomain. Hopefully this visualizes how data is lost
010 1
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
Putting any X in the input yields essentially the same function because the domain has no consequence on the output Thinking about this in R -> R it's like the difference between the set of maps sending 0 onto all the reals, and the set of all maps sending a real number to 0
110 1
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
It is not misinformation to say that a decrease in the energy supply while demand stays consistent will raise prices. Regardless of costs for the type of infrastructure you're describing, if nuclear hadn't been axed, energy would be cheaper. How much cheaper is out of the scope of my point
200 2
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
Well that doesn't explain why German electricity is so much more expensive than France's. Nuclear energy isn't competitive with solar anymore for _new_ projects, but choosing to dismantle perfectly fine sources of energy was a mistake
200 2
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
Even if there isn't a 'shortage', energy prices naturally go up when supply doesn't meet demand. The reason why France has cheap and stable electricity compared to Germany is because they never lost energy independence
110 1
Gavin @8rx.bsky.social · 05/09/2025
This was before they foolishly dismantled their nuclear power plants, now they have to buy extra energy from neighbors, causing their prices to go up
