Our statement on the Hospital Authority hearing on bond financing for Mount Nittany Medical Center. During the meeting, Seven Mountains representatives confirmed for the first time that the worker that fell last year on the hospital tower project died of his injuries.
Our Chapter is concerned with the manner of the Centre County Hospital
Authority's meeting. As a public authority, they are bound to comply with Pennsylvania Sunshine Law. Their lack of proper notice, lack of answers as to who convened the meeting and paid for private meeting space, and their move to approve a waiver of conflict of interest and retain Philadelphia-based labor counsel utilized by Mount Nittany Medical Center deserves the utmost scrutiny.
PRESIDENT LEWIS, SEVEN MOUNTAINS AFL -CIOUnacknowledged worker deaths, community outery over worker treatment, alleged violations of federal laws such as the National Labor Relations Act, and pervasive lack of fiscal transparency raise serious questions regarding the credibility and capability of Mount Nittany Medical Center's executive management team.
They must take tangible steps to restore community trust, beginning with negotiating a fair contract with local healthcare workers.

Our statement on @seiu.org Local 668's historic union victory at Penn State. When we fight, we win.
“We congratulate Penn State faculty at University Park and across the commonwealth on their historic victory in their union election. University Park faculty are joining workers across the Centre Region in declaring that State College is, and will be, a union town.

Their victory signals a new reality: nonsupervisory staff at Centre County’s largest employers are overwhelmingly organized for the first time in our county’s history. In a few short years, Centre County union membership has skyrocketed and now sits at rates well above the state and national average.

When workers organize, working people win. We support Penn State faculty and all workers in their fight for respect, fair compensation, and a voice in workplace decisions. We call on the university to hear the faculty's message, abandon their stall tactics, and to work with faculty and graduate assistants to reach fair union contracts without delay.”

The announcement comes amid scrutiny surrounding an outside position Grove took that critics claimed was a conflict of interest.

Our Chapter was proud to stand with grad workers organizing with @uaw.org as they picketed on May Day for their right to a union election. Penn State needs to drop their objections and stall tactics and let graduate workers exercise their democratic right to form and join a union.
