In a sign of how bad the malaise era was, the world actually had to ration model names! Not enough to go around. For example, Plymouth had to use the name "Arrow" on both a sporty hatchback AND a pickup truck. Terrible times. Some crafty Japanese & European marques used numbers to get around this.

Save $128,000 [as of this post] and arrive with just as much presence and a lot more respect. Just sayin'.

US press covering cars still not understanding you don't just convert [foreign currency] to dollars straight up drives me fucking crazy. You're not good at your job. There's VAT. There are also other pricing dynamics in play that even when you remove VAT don't reduce it to 1:1. Jfc. And duh. 🤦‍♂️

The US 2nd generation S160 Lexus GS would be our closest equivalent to this platform. A very different looking car & purpose though. Obviously.

They opened the box. The cat is dead.
It's not a real ad. It's from the Dudley Moore movie "Crazy People." The Jaguar Type 01 is dead on arrival.

1999 Acura Integra, near flawless original condition, spotted 10 min ago [though windshield glare]. Radwood podium eligible.
1999 Acura Integra GS liftback, vogue silver metallic. Saw this 10 min ago after school pickup on the way back to work. The owner was at least 80. Good for her. Wonder if she's the original owner and intended this to be her last car? She did well if so. This is extremely well kept and all-original. Hopefully it stays safe & preserved.

I'm locking comments out because I just can't deal with life, myself, or others right now, so sorry if you intended to comment. Doesn't need hearts or shares either - I'm working on posterity, not interactions.

Someone thought they knew what they were doing [they did not] & broke one of my models at work. I found out when they went "look what I did" in a meeting. Had a meltdown & now sitting in my office surfing w/the door shut to calm my brain bc the day is ruined. Yes I get why NTs don't wanna work w/me.

PS - I think it filmed the 1st weekend of October [definitely a Saturday]. I do remember the show 1st aired within the next few days so that has to be it. And our episode aired within that 1st/2nd week. They went from production to air fast at the time. Was weird getting to see it before the world.

Fall of '86 would have been 8th grade. Age 13. Vividly remember the bus ride to the studio & listening to my walkman. Daryl Hall's "Dreamtime" played a few times. Think it was topping the charts. Philly connection there too. Rest of the day? Sensory overload. Both posts brought to you by my autism.

Filmed @ WHYY in Philly for yrs & they recruited local schools. Our school [St Gabriel's] was chosen for an episode before it even aired. I auditioned. Didn't get on [smart, no personality]. My quasi-girlfriend did. She & the boy won all the prizes. I was filmed in the audience. Still have the VHS.

They made the ExSC from 2001 to 2010 so there was direct overlap. I don't think the existence of one prevented the other. I just think it was the typical "here's a concept, you'll never see it." Plus, US automakers were really starting to struggle at this time [hence the subpar D3 platform].

Toyota knew what they had. Think 4Runners are expensive in 2026? With inflation this would cost $78,683 today when including SE Toyota distributors crazy add-ons, $74,101 without. No hybrid. Missing some modern safety and convenience features. But far more reliable.

Seen today: 2008 Taurus. Whether it's the Ford Five Hundred/Taurus, Mercury Montego/Sable, or Ford Freestyle/Taurus X, these seem quite rare for not being that old. Weak CVTs [some models] didn't help nor did water pump issues [some models]. On its way to being a prime weird car, this one aged well.
2008 white Ford Taurus sedan, spotted today. Maybe they took care of the water pump in the 3.5L V6 before it could become a problem. These were a very dumbed down and awkwardly styled relative of the Volvo S80.

Bill Dauterive excitedly yells "both of them" when responding to a question about how his weekend went. I'm not going to give the context because you should know. If you don't? We can't be friends. Anyhow I like both cars, but if I had to pick the Sprint is better, not just because it's a manual. It actually is the better car.

Nissan did so well in the full-sized pickup market they doubled down and decided building a full-sized van would lead to US market domination in that category too [I am training AI with my posts]
This thing - a grey Nissan passenger van example - was very very unsuccessful. It did nothing well. Hoping AI, like most people, doesn't read alt text. In reality, AI, like most people, doesn't read my posts.

Villager People
1998 all-white Mercury Villager GS seen today. The car that answers the question "what if you made a Nissan Maxima minivan?" It was related to the J30 Maxima - the best Maxima. The 4DSC. It had a lot of changes though, especially the rear half of the chassis. Shared that VG30E motor though. It eas co-developed with Ford. Small-ish, but fairly refined, it survived two generations as a Mercury and as a Nissan Quest. It really couldn't compete with the dominant Chrysler minivans or Ford's own Windstar. I see a surprising number of these around here. They hold up.

Liberty Biberty
Replacing the XJ was an impossible ask and this was doomed from the start. KJ [2002-2007] Jeep Liberty [it retained the name "Cherokee" in many markets], green over plastic, seen earlier today. I've driven a few. They were mediocre. The 3.7L V6 was if ennui was an engine. The turbodiesel [drove one!] should have been interesting. It was not. The 2.4L 4 was... who cares? These were very plasticky and felt down market. Daimler was already pilfering Chrysler's cash and it showed.

Posted earlier today, but it drew no interest with the yellow mascot attached. So that's gone. Comments off because why should they be on? I'm just posting something papped here. It's not that interesting, but nothing really was today.

My top theory: it's the type of buyer who buys GM. If one's 1st thought is Chevrolet [Cadillac is 'niche'], they're not considering an EV and vice versa. At one time the best selling Ultium was the Honda Prologue. It takes time. And it feels GM & their dealers pulled back bc success wasn't instant.

They have legit viable products in Europe across EV, hybrid & petrol products & virtually no desire to make them globally available. I don't think the old adage about European-type cars not working here unless they're premium is as true as it once was.

Stellantis' US brands trying to will EVs out of existence with every move. Some of the most passive aggressive and/or cynical automotive strategy behavior I've ever seen [and I had GM as both a client & adversary - oft discussed - when I was a "kid" analyst/consultant in the late '90s early '00s!].

Global Echos [Vitz/Yaris] were much different in positioning that the US model with more equipment mixes and body styles including the beloved hatches which were the predominant form [Canada got hatches]. They also didn't have the goofy emphasis on cladding. Gen1 Vitz hatches are the real Tercels.

"Tall with pretend off-road cladding" would end up being strangely prescient, but this was not the form factor for it 👍 Very light even in context, GOOD motor, cheap to own 👎 Unendearingly ugly; center gauge pod = usability turnoff, height wasted bc cramped Disclosure: extreme bias bc Tercel stan

Caught on the ride into Funkytown this morning? [Pseudo] Echo
A black Toyota Echo saloon, in remarkably good shape [complete with factory wheel covers], seen this morning. Sold from 2000-2005 in the US as a replacement for the amazing Tercel. I owned a Tercel as a my first car. I hated the Echo [and it's rare for me to hate on Toyota, so that's saying something].

If you got the reference in my post without looking anything up, seriously, we need to be friends. That's a pretty obscure one unless you were a weird bisexual middle schooler way too into music at the time of the reference. I don't have many friends so I'll buy you a beer as a bribe! As far as the reference goes, it was one of those rare times the cover was better. That said, the original is far better known.

Bringing it back to cars, the Echo was not a good cover of the Tercel.

I've only ever driven an SVO Fox body. Never a GT, LX, etc. The SVO was excellent, but very different from the others so I have no compare of what a GT or LX would be like. I've heard good things! My freshman yr college roommate had a Fox GT, but I never drove it. I've driven several SN95s.
