Retro coder and homebrew computer maker, fan of all things 6502, electronics and retro computers in general. Z80 vs 6502? I don't care they're both in computers I loved back in the day. Oric, Atari and Amiga were my childhood machines!

Of course I meant to say that it's a UK computer that also sold well in France, doh!

It was a UK machine also sold well in the UK. It came out in late 1982 but the one in the picture is from late 1983. 6502 cpu so just the three registers! I did a lot of assembly on it which was transferable to the Atari 800XL. Decent zx spectrum alternative but very little software!

I don't have the cat issue but it's always precarious packing it up and taking it to an event by car. I never know if it will boot up again and usually spend ages fiddling with wires to persuade it😂

Wonderful project and both delighted and humbled that I may have inspired anything! It's interesting you're using the same approach to the master clock so running the Z80 at a nice 5.36MHz, but with similar issues with peripheral chips! I'm overclocking the ACIA but is kinda holding up for now🤞🏽

The tricks are needed as the vram is slow to update from the 6502. Several NOPs between each data transfer hence working with characters where possible!

Thank you my friend. Work keeps getting in the way is the issue! 😂 Is the Elk like the Speccy then with basically bit mapped modes only?

Trying to smooth scroll on the TMS9918a is a little tricky - need to pre-scroll all graphic elements based on where they are in the tile map. Anyway kinda got it working - now to do something with it! What do folks think could suit this kind of feature? #retrocomputing youtu.be/FrumT_-Iq7s

Haha glad I'm not the only one who just used whatever was easy to source. I think thicker wires are better and generally better than jumper wires (at least the ones I've used).

To be honest I never did check on the brands and sometimes they were no name items! I used amazon and local UK suppliers plus a while back picked up some breadboards when Maplin in the UK was sadly closing..

6502nerd @6502nerd.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
Been away so just seeing this! Yup breadboard can be a pain but my contraption does work reasonably reliably even at 5.36MHz for the main board and cpu clock. Breadboards do vary in quality although I don't remember using a specific brand. Good luck!

Agreed. I'm clocking my 6502 at 5.36MHz, half the dot clock needed by the 9918a. Works great at that speed.
020
6502nerd @6502nerd.bsky.social · 01/05/2026
To clarify, I mean specifically a 6502 at 8MHz seemed unreliable driving the VDP, Z80 has different bus timing..
020
6502nerd @6502nerd.bsky.social · 01/05/2026
It is an amazing chip considering it harks from the 70s! It would be interesting to see if you can drive it at 14MHz because I'm not sure if it will latch the data at that speed. I had trouble at 8MHz.. 🤔

Port of a game from dflat to native Oric - easier for folks to try using emulator or even real machine. I've made some improvements too e.g. the game music which is a decent rendition (not by me!) of a legendary electronic track. #programming #8bitcoders youtu.be/jMgaQnY0t24

We learnt Pascal for A level at college. It was designed for education so it's decent I think. But by my second year I was using C on my Amiga A500 and I liked that more!
