our paper "Handling troubles with discretion: Transforming informings into announcements in a control room behind a mixed-reality performance" (w/Christian Greiffenhagen) is finally online www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
People often encounter troubles, which in co-present situations may involvethe assistance of others. We investigate how a control room uses a particulardivision of labor to notice and handle troubles within a mixed-reality liveperformance: Monitors (tasked with noticing troubles of performers outsidethe control room) only inform directors about troubles; directors then mayannounce those troubles to performers (how to resolve them). We present twokey findings: First, although informings typically contain trouble-formulations,these are often absent from the announcement, which allows directors tofocus on the progressivity of the performance rather than topicalize theresponsibility of trouble or the recurrence of the trouble. Second, directorsavoid attributing responsibility for the trouble either by adopting agent-lessformulations or by aggregating agency. Together, these practices allow direc-tors to handle troubles “with discretion.” Data are in English.People often encounter troubles as part of what they are doing. When people are talking to one another, theorganization of handling troubles of speaking, hearing, and understanding is known as “repair” (Schegloff etal., 1977, p. 361). When people are engaged in other practical courses of action, the organization of handlingtroubles may be referred to as “recruitment” (Kendrick & Drew, 2016) or “assistance” (Kendrick, 2021). Inmany cases, handling troubles may be heard as doing other actions, such as complaining, blaming, oraccusing (Jefferson, 1987, p. 88). To minimize this, others may design their handling in such a way as to keepthese possibilities “off the conversational surface . . . to correct with discretion” (Jefferson, 1987, p. 100). It isthis phenomenon we explore in this article.

apropo this thread, a reminder of Eisenmann et al. (2024) on Garfinkel's early research on ELIZA and LYRIC, and the importance of studies that respecify phenomena that are now simply taken for granted in the AI discourse link.springer.com/article/10.1...
Garfinkel’s experiments with human–computer interaction document the reliance of the machine on the human commitment to sense-making. His breaching scripts, if we can call them that, were designed to make trouble that reveals how the situation is produced in and as the interaction between the typing user and the machine, including the totality of its interface, programming, and physical components. It also shows how human users remain committed to making sense of interactional sequences in the face of trouble, and in doing so, demonstrates how AI systems constitutively rely upon users’ sense-making work for their effective operation. Accordingly, Garfinkel’s early studies reveal the cooperative practices standing at the core of media and technology (Schüttpelz 2023), allowing for the re-specification of things, such as “ELIZA effect”, “confirmation bias”, and “cognitive dissonance”, in terms of the constitutive social practices of their human users—the methods through which these phenomena are ordinarily produced and made recognizable (cf. Rawls and Turowetz 2021; Turowetz and Rawls 2021).

the AISI UK "Frontier AI Trends Report" uncritically spouts claims about AGI, treats benchmarks without much credulity, and misunderstands what actual expertise is who cares though? well, the AISI is a UK "government organisation" 🫣 www.aisi.gov.uk/frontier-ai-...
Our testing shows an extraordinary pace of development. We’ve found that AI systems are becoming competitive with – or even surpassing – human experts in an increasing number of domains. It is plausible that in the coming years, this trend may lead to capabilities widely acknowledged as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or otherwise transformative AI. This technological trajectory is deeply consequential: governments, industry, civil society, and the public need clear, evidence-based insights to navigate it.

Mike Lynch gets to the essential rub for ethnomethodology in responding to Eric Livingston's "Ethnomethodology's Broken Promise" for some, doing 'true EM' means dissolving into the doing entirely - this response to the essential problems of 'doing EM' link.springer.com/article/10.1...
It may be true that Garfinkel never seems
to get into the details of dirty (or clean) laundry and instead draws upon his favored
phenomenologists for resonant conceptual and methodological themes (including
“detail” itself). He proposes to respecify such ‘classic’ themes as locally organized
embodied work. Livingston dismisses Garfinkel’s theorizing and philosophizing as
idle glossing in search of professional legitimacy, and Garfinkel sometimes apolo-
gizes for merely theorizing about what he proposes to respecify. However, at the
same time, he uses ‘classic themes’ of fact, reason, method, scientific discovery, and
so on, as touchstones that provide connections and hooks to long-standing abstract
issues, concerns, and preoccupations. In the absence of these resonant touchstones,
“respecification” would have no point of departure and return, and we would be left
with doing laundry in all of its marvelous detail.

looking at human-robot collaboration led to investigating the wider discussion in #CSCW about human-AI 'collaboration' in the end technology is just something caught in the net of the social world, it cannot be a 'collaborator' in any normally meaningful sense of that word
And it seems fair to draw the conclusion from
our analyses that there are some significant conceptual problems to unreservedly appropriating
this notion of ‘collaboration’ from CSCW and blandly applying it to such human-robot encounters
on the streets (concurring with conclusions from Johansen et al. who argue that such mappings
between HRC and CSCW may be problematic at times). It also seems likely that this is indicative of
a wider problem facing CSCW itself, in which we see arguments for ceding of ground from people
to machines, as in a related but broader discussion developing on “human-AI collaboration” [57].
This move could well be a significant mistake for CSCW that misunderstands collaborative action.

A new Meta AI button has been added to WhatsApp. You didn't ask for it, but they gave it to you anyways Ok so let's ask the "assistant" how to disable or remove the button. Here I'm asking this question which is met with a bizarre mangled response claiming that by deleting the chat with meta AI you can also remove the button. Except this is just a canned response which has been mangled with a spurious addition that has nothing to do with the questionLet's look at our chat settings as instructed elsewhere

Mr Howells told BBC News he was pleased with the work his legal team had done in the High Court trial, but that he would now be representing himself in a case filed with the Court of Appeal – using an "artificial intelligence agent" to assist his claim.

He described AI as "an absolutely amazing technology" that had helped him better understand court processes and the law, and that he believed he had about seven "solid grounds in law" for his case, which he hopes to be able to present in-person to the Court of Appeal.

we (Hannah Pelikan, Bilge Mutlu and me) have a new paper out for #HRI2025 called "Making Sense of Public Space for Robot Design" The main contrib is a framework for thinking about public places + robots (An RAi UK funded project, see robotsinpublic.org) PDF: www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~pszsr/files...
Paper abstract: If robots are to be deployed in public places, we
need to understand what factors their design should consider.
Informed by sociological studies of urban settings, particularly
the work of William H. Whyte and the Street Life Project, we
describe four characteristics of public places that affect and are
affected by robot design: (1) localism—how robot design aligns
with the identity, culture, and character of the place(s) they
reside within; (2) environments—the physical characteristics of
the environment in which public robots operate; (3) activities—
consideration for the various daily, occasional, and situational activities that are tied to place(s) robots inhabit; and (4) sociability—
how people collectively and individually relate to, interact with,
and make sense of robots deployed in public places. Throughout,
we illustrate these characteristics with examples drawn from
empirical studies of public robots. We discuss how these key
characteristics of public places can inform HRI designframework image - for actual description please refer to the paper which has textual descriptions for all quadrants / sections of this framework

I missed this recent story about about the Alan Turing Institute ATI was initially set up as a kind of membership club - so it's hardly surprising others in the UK research landscape have felt "disenfranchised" www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-r... www.ukri.org/wp-content/u...
Governance The panel recognised that there is evidence of the Institute playing a national role in
the AI ecosystem. The Institute engages with academia, industry, and other bodies, advises into
some government departments, and hosts the UK AI Standards Hub. However, some UK research
stakeholders feel disenfranchised. The potential of the Institute to act on behalf of the whole
ecosystem has not yet been achieved, a key part of the national institute role. The Institute should
aim to represent all actors in the UK ecosystem on an international stage, and enable research that
is additive to, not duplicative of, that carried out in other institutions.“The scientific leadership we have had has too often been left rudderless; left behind as both the community and the cutting-edge has moved ahead without us, whilst we are publicly and privately criticised for being behind the curve,” they added.

my predictions for 2025: Talkie Toaster will finally be a reality thanks to the billions invested in LLMs
One particular item in this collection was a talking toaster, which he'd bought in a souvenir shop on the Uranian moon of Miranda for the princely sum of $£1 9.99 plus tax. Talkie Toaster(patent applied for), was made of deep red plastic, and, according to the blurb on the packaging, could engage its owner in a number of pre-programmed stimulating breakfast conversations. Moreover, it had a degree of Artificial Intelligence, so, in time, it could learn to assess your mood and tailor its conversation accordingly. I you woke up feeling bright and bubbly, the Toaster would respond with chirpy repartee. If you rose in a darker mood, the Toaster's Artificial Intelligence could sense this, and provide your breakfast muffins in suitably reverent silence.

Our desires must conform to God’s. God is not our servant. If he were he would be
susceptible to criticism. God is perfect and above criticism (2 Samuel 22:31; Psalms 18:30,
Zondervan, 2020). In fact, God is so intelligent that he made a prophecy through David inPsalms 22:16-18 that the garment of Jesus would have lots cast for it at the crucifixion. This
prophecy was made hundreds of years before it happened. Further, the very fact prophecy exists,
which is the ability to predict the future, proves there is a design to our behavior and its
consequences (Reeves et al., 2016). T
